Great vid, Mark! I'm a mushroom enthusiast, or an amateur "mycologist," so I thought I'd share a few things! The King bolete mushroom - pronounced BOW-leet - is known by a few names, like Penny Bun, Porcini, or by its scientific name, Boletus edulis. The California king bolete grows in California as the name suggests, for example. It is a pretty *fun guy* ;) It is what's called a "polypore" mushroom, because there are many many pores beneath the cap. This is different from gilled mushrooms, which have gills that radiate from the stem in the center outwards to the edge of the cap. These pores release the mushroom's spores so that they can travel on the wind and land elsewhere to make more mushrooms! That's why we often use wicker baskets when carrying and moving mushrooms - the spores can fall from the basket as we go, planting more mushrooms just like Johnny Appleseed! So imagine a mushroom is the apple, with the spores being the seeds. The "branches," "trunk," and "roots" of the mushroom are called mycelium, and they grow underground. Neat! A cautionary note for anyone curious - please NEVER eat any wild mushrooms that have not been identified by experts! While there are many varieties of delicious mushrooms out in the world, there are others than can cause you serious problems (including death!). Some perfectly edible mushrooms have impostors that look just like them, but are bad for you. So please, only eat mushrooms that have been identified by experts, such as the wonderful people in the video. Happy hunting! :)

Thank you very much Garnet! For languages, as much as I'd like to learn more of each language, I'm often in a country for just 7 - 12 days or so, so I'm usually not able to learn more than a few words. But just a few words can definitely help you connect so much better with people. But Thailand is a little different as I've been living here for quite a few years now. Hey Mark, the mushrooms in this video are not King Boletes (Boletus edulis), which have long been prized in western cuisine, but instead appear to be a somewhat related bolete: Phlebopus portentosus. While western cultures have not been able to find a commercially-viable way to cultivate B. edulis, it appears (from what I’ve been reading online) that P. portentosus has been cultivated in China and Southeast Asia for much of the last decade. If so, this is likely a mushroom that we will eventually become more familiar with in the West. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new-to-me bolete!
@henningbartels62453 жыл бұрын
Danny, that's true. The mushroom doesn't look like the King Bolete you can find in European forests - in Central Europe often close to oak trees. The species in the video looks related though.

@JohnDoe-re4qy4 жыл бұрын
@@thegardener8349 I googled them, and yes. They don't grow naturally in the southern hemisphere. But, SA, and a few other places have started.

I’ve always loved mushrooms, it’s a shame that most of the time in the US our grocery stores are so limited on what they have. Thank you for sharing your food adventures, even the local and at home ones are a joy to watch ❤️
