I lived in both Naples and Sarasota for several years. If you can afford it Naples by far west of US41 would be my choice. I lived in Old Naples near the pier, it has the feeling of a beach town, many beautiful backroads to drive, bike or walk though, you're right on the beach and cute shopping and restaurants on 5th or 3rd street south. Naples is so safe too, never had a problem at all. Naples is more seasonal in the summer months the population is probably about 50% of the winter months. Naples can be boring but if you need excitement hop on the interstate and you are in Miami South Beach in no time. There is also the nature aspect of Naples being right next to the Everglades. Naples is super clean and super wealthy so the large amount of tax revenue keeps it nice and clean. The best part of Napes are the people, they are all so NICE and POLITE.

Good video, but it needed to be more comprehensive as it omitted any reference to weather. I retired and moved to a very active 55 and over community in Bonita Springs (just north of Naples) from Pennsylvania in March 2022. Weather was a big factor in my decision as I wanted to be able to be active - including swimming and biking - year round. And I’ve since taken up kayaking. I acclimated to the hot and humid weather in 6 months which means that even mild temperatures can feel cold to me. Although Sarasota appears to have many strong attributes and advantages, Sarasota can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Naples in the winter months. And to be fair to Sarasota the Naples area seems to have been more severely impacted by hurricane activity than Naples in at least the last 20 years. Nevertheless, for a retiree Naples is very appealing.

Perhaps some but I do believe most will stay. Coastal living is in high demand. Look at Punta Gorda..it was completely rebuild after the hurricane hit it.

Katrin, very interesting comparison between Naples and Sarasota. I live in central Naples. Within less than 15 minutes of driving, I can get access to all the shopping, restaurants in downtown, concert hall, and the beautiful beaches and parks. What I miss the most is the closure of Nordstrom in the Waterside Shopping Center, and the space is still vacant. Although there are other stores like Macy, JC Penney, and Dillard’s , these stores may close the doors sooner than later. The worst thing in Naples to me is that it is very difficult to find trustworthy contractors.

Great video Katrin! When our kids were school aged, we vacationed all over Florida, always asking "would we ever like to like here?" We love Marco Island, and I originally thought that "if I wasn't planning on still working when I move, I'd move to Marco Island or Naples", however after finding Sarasota, and the many great communities in Lakewood Ranch, we plan to move to Lakewood Ranch soon. I plan to work full-time for another 10-15 years, but even after retiring, Sarasota is the place for us. We like the energy of the multi-generational aspect of the area, vs the "rolling coffins" feel of Naples. But, like you said people need to experience both and figure out what works best for them.

the bad thing about the video is that when you build a place up then people want to move there. so then it loses its small town charm, and crime rates go up, and everything goes up. its like people making off-grid houses in alaska, now there are thousands of off-grid houses in alaska so then it ruins the whole wilderness thing once everyone is doing it

I hope they can fix up what Ian did to Naples by next season. Ive seen many videos of what Ian did to Naples, especially Vanderbilt Beach. Once Naples and Fort Myers are finally rebuilt, they are going to have great seasons and longer than usual. Just like now as we are seeing our seasons here in Sarasota carrying on right thru August.

Not even close. I lived in both Sarasota and Naples. Naples is by far better living than Sarasota. Better restaurants and shopping. See Seed to table in Naples. Definitely cleaner.

@@birdlynn417 I was good. I left my condo which was 1.5 blocks from the beach in a mandatory evacuation zone for the storm and stayed at my bosses house which was several miles inland. When I arrived home the condo building across the street was so damaged it had to be torn down leaving me a view of the bay.

I like your summary: If you are over 65 and must live within 10 miles of a Louis Vuitton store, go to Naples. Everyone else, Sarasota wins hands down.

Great video. But for downtown, Naples is better. Sarasota is lacking. Also, not everyone likes the big buildings of Sarasota. Many people of Florida are having issues with building in their communities statewide and feel that it has changed the community for the worse. Sarasota with these high-rises have changed the area big time. Its not the same as it was some years ago. Also, people get to a certain age and beaches are not important, maybe like 35+?

Grew up on the gulf coast I guess I’m fortunate enough to have the experience of living there in the 80s 90s. It was beautiful and serene. By the early 2000s Naples Sarasota fort Myers beach-all a zoo. Now it’s beyond ridiculous with the amount of people .
