He is truly worthy of a documentary of his life! Playing for Motown right after Highschool along with 15 year old Ray Parker Jr. His L5 was originally Ray’s! Dennis Coffee put him down with a Wah Wah pedal a Crybaby and he stuffed the L5 with some sponges! That’s how he played on countless hits for well over 40 years from Marvin Gaye to Maxwell! RIP!! True legend!

I can't find the words to express the joy Herbie and the Headhunters give me. Jazz flutist Kent Jordan was my jr. high music teacher and we learned songs like "take the A train" and "I remember Clifford". Those songs planted the seed that became my love for jazz. The first song by Herbie I ever heard was "spiraling prism". I never knew the name of the song but I was obsessed with finding out who made it. One day as I was washing the first car I ever bought with my own money, (an '81 Cutlass supreme) it came on the local rnb station in their Sunday morning jazz show followed by "textures" and ending with "chameleon". I was never the same. I made it my mission in life to find everything he was on. If there is a mt. Rushmore of genius keyboardists, Herbie has to be on it ....

That’s because their isn’t 10,000,000 people in the u tube verse that are intelligent enough to know good music. We live in a world where short and simple is what entertains. It is the few who appreciate great art. Some people can’t appreciate songs without singers. Some people can’t stay with a song for over 3 minutes. They would all say he’s a good musician but they just don’t like that type of music. People buy the hook. You gotta have something catchy or the masses won’t like it. It’s easy to entertain the masses. That’s what record companies do. They put out what sells. I’ve known record companies send great musicians down the road and keep some lame band or singer for a song. Sad but the best artists in the world never get their due.

James Levi is amazing! When I had a band in highscool, he’d let us rehearse in his space or he’d come to us. We worked with him for 6 months. He was great at explaining things and even gave me a few tips since I’m a drummer! I’m 24 now, I was 16-17 at the time but it’s something I’ll forever hold onto. I’m still drumming and can’t get enough of it!

Dang! I used to love the Don Kirshner show. Growing up in the 70s was great. So real, so experimental and free. In many ways I think it was more experimental than the 60s, because you really had a cultural crossover. This was great!

@@debvalle7466 so true I used to go to alot of Concerts in the 70s and 80s I saw Slave kool and the gang and Santana in philly 1978 at the old Spectrum 10 rows from the stage right in the middle Santana played almost 3hrs incredible show $7.50 for all 3 shows. I also saw RTF with Chick Lenny Al and Stanley in Philly in the early 80s $15 great show saw Al Paco And John M the Acoustic trio in the early 80s front row 10ft from the stage and incredible show and saw Herbie in the early 80s with the Reggae band Steel Pulse great show. Oh what great times the 70s and 80s was great Music and times.

All day, everyday...I close my eyes and I'm right back there hanging on Castle Hill Avenue in the Bronx on a Saturday afternoon in the sunshine. The styles, the people, that Fender Rhodes sound and these grooves. Sad to hear about Paul's passing. I think Paul left the country about 5 years ago and I lost track of him. Herbie's Thrust album with Paul and Mike Clark still drops my jaw. Saw Mike Clark (ex Headhunter's Drummer) a few years back and he is still killin' it.

James Levi plays a straight and dry beat, like Harvey Mason was doing in that famous George Benson live concert, and with the rim shot grip like James Gadson was doing to get this super short and dry snare sound. Dont want to compare those brilliant Headhunter drummers, i love them all.

Paul Jackson's funk pushed Herbie and Bennie to places they could never get to without him. He will be studied and copied and loved by bass players forever. I have a theory that every bass player can remember details of the exact moment they 1st heard Spank-a-Lee, it's a life changing experience for most of us....

What a gem! Seems a transitional period for the group - little loose with the arrangements, etc., but so deeply funky. I love that underrehearsed thing with groups this good. Seems maybe the core of the Secrets album band - Herbie, Wah-Wah, Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, and James Levi. Can anyone confirm this?

Listening to Herbie Hancock's music back in the day is what made me get into smooth jazz, which is all I listen to these days...even at 69 years old. The music is timeless. Rest in peace Paul Jackson.
