Great tutorial for installing headliners. It's so true that not all contact cement is created equal. I got ahold of some water based contact cement. It was cheaper, odorless, and total $HIT. Worthless for holding. Good quality contact cement is expensive, but worth every penny. Don't try to cheap out. Not only will the installation frustrate you, it will NOT hold up over time.

@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 , The only other automotive job I would absolutely farm out is a convertible top. I tried to help a friend try and fix the top on his early 70’s Mustang years ago and after we messed with it for a week we ended up taking it to a real shop. After he messed with it for a couple weeks, we finally found a real pro who got it not only looking right, but working right. And not leaking, which I’m told is the real trick. So there is no way I’d attempt one of those.

😯Wow ! ....I could never do that, I'd be too afraid to mess it up, especially on the roofs of larger cars- as that Mustang has a tiny roof. But thanks for the tutorial, but I'd leave it up to the pros, and again- you have the skills 👍

The nice part about those headliners is the easier piecemeal way you can work on them. My Flex's full-length one-piece headiner was a royal PITA when I needed to remove it in order to install factory roof rails, especially since every interior side trim panel must be removed to drop it prior to swapping out the rail inserts.

I used weldwood contact cement for my headliner on my wagoneer a few years ago. I used that because i used a vinyl burgundy cordovan type color to match my leather interior. And the weldwood glue worked great to hold it to the cardboard. I used a foam paint roller to put it on. Had to use a lot though as the cardboard headliner sucks it up. First Headliner I ever did, was on a '65 VW Bug... I bought material and "unstitched" the remains of the old one, for a pattern... After I sewed it, it was install time... Well, February in Canada, is a little cold.😂😂😂 So I put a rather large electric heater in the car, so I could get a decent stretch on it... While "Sweatin' like a Bad Girl" in Church", I stretched it in, glued down the sides and put the quarter windows back in... It turned out great, and I had no "SAG" in the 90 degree summer days... I still have to laugh when I think about it: Windows out, in the carport, freezing weather, heater roaring, sweating and stretching the headliner in. 🤣🤣🤣 On a side note, I wasn't sure if I had tightened it up, to the point, that when the weather got to freezing, that it might rip the stitches... 😮😮😮 But it was okay... 👍👍👍 Good Results from a Mispent Youth...

My fil was an auto upholstery for over 40yrs. I've watched him make and install antique to modern car headliners. If you' be never done this before, do yourself a favor and take your headliner to a professional. Most headliner kits need unexpected trimming done to fit properly, especially in roof side curves. Good headliners aren't cheap. Cheap headliners are a PITA. Just my experience.

Laying out in the sun will help it relax back into it normal shape and flatten out any creases that have formed. You will need to stretch it a bit to glue it on the car but honestly the most important thing is using the correct glue!! DAP Landau Top & Trim spray grade glue is the ONLY one to use.
