Hey Tim. About 2 years ago I experienced a leak in my 2000 4Runner (no sunroof) coming out of the exact same spot you mentioned. Turns out a screw holding down my roof rack was the culprit. I ended up taking the rack off, cleaning the debris underneath and reapplied silicon to each screw. Worked like a charm. Maybe if the leak comes back he can give that a try.

Hey Donovan, you reminded me of another common leak spot and I forgot to mention this in the video. I have read on T4R.org that people have fixed roof leaks just like you described. I'll make sure to mention this to Mark. Thanks for reminding me of this. Happy Wrenching!

Hey Noel, sorry for the late reply. I don't think you have to remove the headliner if your leak is due to the roof rack. Just remove the rack, clean up all the screw holes and then use some silicone in each screw hole when putting it back together. I've heard this has worked for other 3rd Gen owners.

Huge thanks for producing this video. I have a 1990 4runner, and I looked, and looked for a video to remove the plastic trim because my 4runner did not come with grab handles, and I tried to take it off myself but I felt like I didnt know what I was doing and I was going to break the 30 year old plastic. All I need to do now is to go out in my garage and start to remove stuff. Thanks again.

Thank you for this vid, I have a leak coming down the drivers side a-pillar out near my electrical little panel in my foot well. Gonna take the headliner off, and test with water. Maybe its the roof rack, maybe its the windshield seal. Yall we're a great team, thanks again

I guess I could have had a career in sports commentating. You're the first person to ever mention that. Good luck figuring out the the source of the leak. I wouldn't pull the whole headliner out at first. I'd just release enough in the front to allow the headliner to hang down so you can visualize the area and then test with water to figure out where it's coming in.

Thanks. This is just what I needed to see how to remove the map light assembly to tighten a loose rear view mirror. I don't say this often about Toyota engineering but that is the worst design for holding that mirror on. I had to bypass their way and develop my own. It was incredibly simple to do. I used a longer screw/bolt and some washers large enough to hold it on. Why Toyota decided to use that funky pin holder set up is anyone's guess. Thanks again for your great and thorough videos Timmy!

Thanks guys, my rear windshield washer is now fixed!!! Thanks to this video I was motivated to get it done! First, I went to Harbor Freight and spent 6 bucks for a nylon trim tool kit which worked pretty nice for getting off panels. Here is a link to the low dollar one I got: www.harborfreight.com/Nylon-Pry-Bar-Installer-Kit-4-Pc-69668.html I had a 20% off coupon which seems to be available all the time at Harbor Freight. Plus they gave me a free gift. I choose the 40x50inch moving blanket to keep in my rig just in case. I believe the lower panel on the C pillar was pinching and somehow restricting the washer fluid line. (Or it wasn't getting enough draw/pressure to push it up the hill to the rear window). I took off the passengers side scuff panels (2) and followed the washer fluid line back. Then I took off the lower C pillar panel and I could see where the fluid stopped and there was nothing but air after that. So, there was a giant air bubble in the line under the C pillar panel and I think manipulating the washer hose and flicking it with my finger worked it free and the pump finally kicked fluid up and out to the back windshield. Well anyways, after trying the pump again it started working!!!!! (I had been trying to get it to work for 4 months!) I think I will try to clean out the hose with some weed whip line, hoping it fits in that small of a diameter hose... Thanks and great video. Rear washer fluid issue solved for $6 dollars including 4 free nylon pry tools and a free large clean packaged moving blanket. I wonder what the dealership would have charged? Ha

Hey Kelly, that's great news. Glad this video help you tear apart your interior so you could locate where the problem was with your rear washer fluid delivery. I buy quite a bit of stuff at Harbor Freight. I'm there all the time. On my 98 3rd Gen, I had an annoying rattling while I was driving. I took the glove box out and was looking for loose wires and saw a new antenna wire for the aftermarket stereo that the previous owner had installed and the wire was loose but that wasn't the culprit. After listening to the rattling for a few more days I decided to investigate further. I suspected the noise might have something to do with the stereo install and I was right. The installer left the old antenna wire hanging and didn't remove it. The OEM antenna wire plug has a heavy metal end and it was resting against a metal frame piece behind the stereo. I ziptied the wire to a wire bundle and the problem was fixed. Your average person would have just lived with the noise turning up the stereo to drown it out and attributed it to be an old vehicle that makes a lot of noise. I was so relieved I found the problem because it was driving me nuts listening to it. It sure is satisfying figuring something out and fixing the problem isn't it? Talk to you later and Happy Wrenching!

Thanks for the work and time on this , Timmy and Mark. I love my sunroof, but I'm starting to investigate a leak I have on my '98 SR5. I first noticed it when one of my kids sat down in the rear passenger seat, and she said it was damp, then I saw some dripping above the upper right corner of the window. I thought it might be the weather stripping, but it looks ok, so I suspect it's the rear drain tube (29:49 in the video), possibly dis-connected up there or maybe some build-up somewhere. I'll start with some weed trim line per your first video and see where that gets me. I'll try the roof rack next (per Donovan D. and some others in the comments). I don't know about pulling apart the headliner like you guys did (I may never get it back on right). Also - I don't have a seam on the front edge of my sunroof like Mark's does. BTW, Mark, love what you've done to your ride. Those wheels are awesome!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I hope you figure it out. To get to the rear drain tube, you don't have to pull the whole headliner down. You can just unhook enough things on that side to pull it down enough to see if the hose is still on the fitting, Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! We've been getting a monsoon here in southcentral KY the last few days as spring looms in the distance. Came out to my truck to see there was water in the driver's seat yesterday and and it was dripping from a soaked headliner and sun visor. Looks like it's my drivers side drain that is plugged. Thanks again for an excellent video. I have everything taken apart. The drain was clogged with tree precipitation, otherwise known as tree crap. The grease on the sunroof motor gear has turned to rubber. I cannot open the sunroof. I have it on the sawhorses. I imagine the rubberized grease has clogged the pair of copper tubes. How can I open the glass to slide it back? Screws are covered. The rear of the glass needs to drop about an inch to clear the roof before sliding backwards. If the 'worm gear' is stuck in the copper tube, is there a catch or release button to get the glass back?

Hey Steve, we haven't removed one yet to be able to give you some good advice. We do have plans to make a video about swapping out a sunroof sometime in the future.
@stevebowling6884
@stevebowling6884 Жыл бұрын
update: The manual calls the copper tubes a cable guide. The cable, (sliding sunroof cable?) has 3 characteristics. A heavy bike cable at the core, surrounded by what looks like spring steel coiled to create ribs. Filled between the spiraled ribs is a rubberized plastic of some sort. After 20 years this cream colored rubberized plastic turned dark tan and it crumbles. The crumbles come loose and clogged the cable guide or copper tubes. There are 4 copper tubes. The 4 copper tubes feed into the gear box housing the gear of the sunroof motor. With the sunroof stuck closed the screws holding the ends of the inside pair of copper tubes are blocked by the glass. I cleared one clog from one outside copper tube. I had to flip the sunroof assembly over drill two 3/16 holes to access 2 brass screws in the top of the gear box that holds the copper tube ends inside the gear box. The digging continues. The sunroof still will not open.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 жыл бұрын
The only reason why we removed the headliner is to figure out the source of Marks's leak. We suspect it was a blocked drain all along because when we poured water into the tray, we couldn't find a leak. I'd start with finding out if the sunroof drains are draining. If one or more are blocked, snake them with some weed whacker line like we do in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5LPiaJqmtmLabM There's also the possibility that you have a leak that is caused from the sunroof glass trim shrinking and causing a gap that allows water in that we fixed with some silicone RTV in this video.

2:45 The problem is not just lock-tite; they are actually JIS screws, not Philips. A Philips-head screw-driver will tend to 'cam-out' of the JIS fastener slots, because the two styles of fastener have different profiles. But, can confirm: that lock-tite is crazy strong. If anyone does find they have to drill off the heads, they should cover their air vents with towels to keep metal shavings from falling inside them. Then after drilling use a file to make a flat surface on the exposed threads, so that some vice-grips can get a solid bite. ...Or, you know, just use a Philips impact driver, which will convert those JIS fasteners into Philips. :)

All that work, I'm still troubleshooting my leak I'm thinking of siliconeing the whole entire roof rack and piece of rubber that runs along the roof?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
People have done it but I wouldn't recommend it siliconing your whole sunroof. Have you pulled your roof rack rails off and siliconed the screw holes? That's another common leak point. Pull off the roof rack rails, clean up the areas around the holes the best you can, maybe blow some compressed air in each of them to remove debris, squirt some silicone in each hole, put the rails in place and put the screws back in.

Glad you like the video. I don't have a ton of experience with diagnosing sunroof issues. It may be a case that there's build-up of junk on the tracks that's slowing the operation down and a little cleaning might help. It also could just mean the sunroof motor is getting tired.

ya, know I have talked to 3 separate dealers about my water infiltration on my 2008 Toyota highlander limited edition and 2 of them told me to bring the vehicle into shop. But what's frustrating when I talk to service and parts about my situation because I have been extensively trying to find water coming in to vehicle, they seem to have no idea that this water infiltration is going on with these vehicles?? Go figure. the 3rd I've watched videos on water coming in from the back bumper body area. There are round water rubber plugs that can dry out and water could get in there.and when talking to parts they told me I would have have bumper panel taken off to get the numbers of the plug. They won't tell me what the stock item is. They suggest again to take vehicle in for service?? This is all crazy to me ?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
Water can get in from blocked sunroof drains. It can also come in via the roof rack screw holes. You can pull the screws out and fill them with silicone and then reinstall the screws. Water can come in through the sunroof trim like we show in this video and I think those are the main ones. Those rubber plugs near the rear bumper aren't a common water intrusion point. To get to those though, you can pull the rear cargo panels away from the body to get at them. Check out my Rear CBI bumper install to see how I did it.

Hey! Are you planning on doing a video about removing the roof panel for the Toyota 4runner? Why I'm asking is cause I want to get a 3rd gen Toyota 4runner without the sunroof but I can't seem to find one so I was wondering if its possible to replace the car roof panel without the sunroof?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
That would not be possible unless you were willing to cut the roof off one rig that does have a sunroof, then cut the roof off another one you find that doesn't have the sunroof and have that one welded on. What you could do is remove the sunroof and then have a plate welded in. This video will show you how to drop your roof headliner so you can access the sunroof to remove it any support brackets for it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4etiGOOgperaJY We don't have a video for removing the sunroof but I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out.

This might be really difficult to fix since you can't open the hatch to easily take off the interior plastic trim to expose the inner workings of the locking mechanism. I honestly don't know how you'd attack this. You know who might be a good resource to ask is a body shop. They might have a suggestion or trick for you to be able to release the lock so you can get it open.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
Carlos Flores how you access the back locking mechanism is you remove the back plastic on the hatch. The grab handle/fabric in the back hatch has a little plastic piece you take out to reveal a 10mm bolt I believe.. after you remove the grab handle and the bolt that secures it in, now you can start to remove the back plastic. Try to get a pry tool in between the plastic and metal of the hatch until you can remove it. It has a series or clips going around the edge. Probably like 14 plastic clips in total. After you remove that plastic piece then you have to remove a metal cover that is preventing you from seeing why the hatch isn’t opening. Does the rear cargo hatch door handle still have tension? Or is it loosey goosy? If it’s loose then something broke preventing the handle from pulling the rod to open the door. If you pull the rod while the door is unlocked you should be able to get the door to Open to get a better look inside

Well, the steps we take to remove the headliner would most likely translate at some level but I imagine there's some differences. I can't say for sure because we've never done this on a 2nd Gen. Same goes for the sunroof leak repair. I'm assuming there's some type of trim around the glass but don't know if the trim shrinking and creating a path for water to get inside relates to 2nd Gens too.

@@Natureboy562 You'll figure it out. You've got the idea of how to go about it. Maybe first have somebody spray hose water over the roof while you're inside looking. If that doesn't pinpoint anything for you, remove the headliner using our video as a guide. You basically have to remove everything that can get in the way of it's removal like dome lights, grab rails, and interior trim pieces and get somebody to help you maneuver it out. Then, do the water application again while you're inside looking for the source of the leak. Perseverance will pay off for you. Let me know what you figure out. Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey Mark, we surmised that the drain cleaning we did actually helped out. We're thinking his rear passenger drain was working but only partially due to a partial blockage in the line. Mark definitely had a leak because him and his wife noticed the carpet getting wet around the passenger wheel well. Now they aren't detecting any leak and it's probably due to the fact the drain is working at full capacity. At least that's our best guess.
