I'm a mechanic and I just addressed the sunroof leak on my 04' Exploder after looking at your video to find the tube exit location. So I thought I'd post some tips based on my repair solution. OK...These sunroofs usually leak for one of a few reasons, clogged drain tube (at the top or bottom), drain tube disconnect (under the headliner you have to pull sun visor off to see or get to that hose connection (hint use gasket maker and a small zip tie to secure the tube to the plastic drain corner) if you find yours popped off like mine did on the drivers side. Mine leaked from bad tar sealant AND a popped off drain tube... So... now for the most common reason.... THE MOST COMMON reason these leak is the black "tar" sealant Ford used on the plastic drain corners of the sunroof pan near the windshield ! The tar sealer shrinks or melts over time and stops working... First scrape off any excess tar you see, then, using a rag soaked with brake cleaner...wipe off the tar and any dirt you will see near the sealing surfaces of the plastic corners (important or your new sealer wont adhere to the surfaces!). After its clean, just re-apply a new sealant of your choice. I used the thick Permatex Ultra Black and it worked perfectly on the drain junctions. Just smooth the sealer with your finger and always think like a rain drop...don't allow the sealant to pile up or cause a dam effect. Your sunroof will no longer leak.

Good info to know... I have the same issue and was about to inspect my drain tube ends. NOTE: There is a silicone sealer meant for Windshields...it is a form of gasket maker that "flows" before it sets. Permatex makes it called "Windshield and Glass Sealer" flowable silicone. I use the stuff for all sorts of applications. Might have to give it a shot.

Seals are a most overlooked part of car maintenance. In order to get life long service from them, they must be cleaned and conditioned, I don't care who manufactured it. Two things these videos have taught me is to check my drain tubes regularly and remind me of the importance of keeping those seals conditioned. I must admit that I have overlooked my sunroof seals, but my car is only two years old so now is a good time to start. I will start with my next cleaning which already takes me 3 or 4 hours, ugh.

I like your videos! GM uses a Non-Hardening Black RTV to seal the oil and differential pans. It stays flexible for years, cleans up easily. It would be pushed out of the way of the rolling wheel of the sunroof. its the OEM part number for the diesel 6.2 & 7.4L engines used in the Hummv. It should help without tape or "normal" fully hardening RTVes that could block or damage the tracks. I wish you the best!

After watching this (thank you) I removed the handles and visors on my Supercrew, but when I tried to open my sunroof, nothing happens. There are balls of rust at the front of it, where I can fit a finger. My console with the sunroof buttons and outside temp on the roof goes crazy, but sunroof buttons are dead. The rear grab handles and rear window also started leaking this week. I don't have this amount of time to waste on this rust bucket. I'm afraid there may be water damage in the sunroof controls, so will have to take that apart too. It would have been nice if Ford would have used a tube of sealer on each vehicle, instead of practically none!! All I could do was put silicone around the screws and put them back in until I figure out how to open the sunroof, but then I'm afraid it won't close!

For me the issue was that that the drain hose (near the floor end of the cabin) was not inserted into the hole that lets out water outside. It was just left against the floor liner. So once the drain fills up it overflowed. I just reinserted it into the correct hole and It works good. Poor factory workmanship....

On my 2002 Honda Accord both front hoses had shrunk and were about 4" too short to seat in the drain fittings so they were draining into the floor pan. I had to pull the headliner and extend both hoses with hose barbs and spring clamps to get them working again. The driver's side was easy but the passenger's side was extremely difficult to reach. I opted not to attempt to replace the hoses completely as they were not cracked and I didn't want to risk the old one and new one separating when trying to pull the replacement hose in through the A pillar.

Thanks for sharing, I hope you were successful in repairing your truck. WTF! I just learned my truck may have clogged drain tubes or a leak in the rear cab brake light. I only recently discovered last week that my floorboard behind the driver's seat is damp: I thought I either left my door ajar or the seals in the door frame or rear window was leaking. I was conversing with the guys at O'Reilly's and one guy inquired if I had a sunroof - yeah I do have a sunroof! It is making sense to me because I started having a sagging headliner 2 to 3 years ago. I thought it was Florida humidity, but Geez Louise, I pray that the inside of my cab roof isn't rusting. Last night I checked my sunroof and I noticed the plastic parts are cracked - I hope I can fix my water leak problem.

Those surfaces don't look like they are mated properly.. I just did a repair with this exact sunroof not long ago on an 07 Lincoln MK LT and the mating surfaces were nice and flush. This almost looks like its been disassembled before likely to replace the plastic bits in the rails and wasn't reassembled properly like making sure the butyl is smeared back out smooth/replaced and the two surfaces are flush before pop riveting (Speaking of which the rivet near the leak looks suspiciously loose, it does not seem to have been cranked down nice and tight till it popped) I know this is an old video and likely suggested to me because I've looked up similar content recently but just thought I would point this out.

Ur msg is very interesting. I read the whole story through . I have a vw 7 golf variant with sunroof. Exact same area gap where water gently goes through. I think there is sealant missing. Flex sealant.. no idea really something like a chewing gun in consistency. Im not sure... water is going through sunroof in general. And its normal and designed for that. But i saw that water goes along the inner line. I guess like tge rail where the glass is going along. But it also looks like a tiby drain for tiby water amounts. But in heavy rain after 5h there is just to much water. That water goes into the second chamber were the windthing is placed during closed sunroof. During heavy rain water summs up. Usually i guess it should flow into the outer chamber that actually is made for the rainwater. Bit before it gets there the level to get over is higher than the level of the gap, cauding the water going the lower level abd then that's the point where it gets into the car at the exact same area. I don't know i think they forgot to seal with this chewing gum looking like sealant. And I read in many different Web pages know that tge real cause is the rear Glas plate, that it isn't aligned properly as u say.since water shouldn't even get into the inner wind thing chamber. I don't know. I never had a sunroof before.but i see thst the symptoms are everywhere pretty similar but this video got to the exact point where water enters

Okay, this is a misdiagnosis. The problem with this vehicle is, the rear sunroof trough is missing. I'd bet it's back up inside the rear of the headliner. This was a common issue with Expeditions and F-150's of this era. It's easy to tell, too: You are closing the shade with the sunroof open. It's not supposed to close when the glass is open. If you open the sunroof glass with everything including the shade shut, the shade opens with the glass. What moves the shade back is the rear trough. When the rear trough comes loose, it can let the shade move freely. So what's wrong with this one is, the rear trough is not in place with the glass shut, and it's letting water into places that it wouldn't normally be, because where you poured water is NEVER supposed to be wet....so sealing the places you said you were going to seal isn't going to work. It might be a bandaid, but it's not the correct fix. The correct fix is to replace the rear trough and both guides. And make sure the drains flow WELL. Not just "flow at all". They should "slurp" when you test them. If not, they aren't flowing well enough
@FixingWithPassion5 жыл бұрын
The main seal on the class sunroof was the correct fix on mine. It does not leak anymore. Also the rear drains were ok. I tested them also they were not clogged. Still the worst sunroof system ever made.
@SealofPerfection5 жыл бұрын
@@FixingWithPassion Glad you think it fixed it. I have my doubts, but occasionally they do fix leaks. Doesn't change the fact that the sunroof shade is not supposed to close with the glass open. Only way that can happen is if the trough is missing. I would be checking that. And I never said anything about the rear drains, but good that they flow. If you think this is the worst sunroof system, I have news for you: It isn't. I've seen many that are worse than this, believe it or not.
@lakeerieautomotive9344 жыл бұрын
I agree either that or put a new seal on it so less water gets in. It could also be the actual sunroof glass leaking in the corners. The sunroof glass has a bead of urethane on it and there could be a crack in the urethane causing a leak down the A pillar
@SealofPerfection4 жыл бұрын
@@lakeerieautomotive934 That's true. It's a very rare occurrence, but can happen. On his, the greasy part where he poured water should NEVER see water. Ever. If it is, something else is wrong. And on his, something else IS wrong, because that shade should not close with the glass open...if the rear trough is in place, it holds the shade open and you can NOT close it until you close the glass. If it does close, means the rear trough has come off, which WAS an issue with these models. So putting a new seal probably did make a tighter seal and stopped most of the leak....for awhile. But it's not "fixed" because it's missing the rear trough...which is probably stuck in the back of the headliner.

Hmm interesting. I recreantly purchased this 2000 EB Expedition 4x4. The previous owner didn't say anything about leaks in the vehicle but I saw signs of it (and odor). I was not worried as I am very handy trouble shouting vehicle issues. I am still in the research phase after dropping the headliner and seeing all the moisture everywhere (the drains are working fine). The first time I fully rolled back the sun roof I noticed that metal rear dam was sitting loose, at an angle, on top of the sunshade. I easily removed it for the time being, thinking it was not that important but maybe it is.

And instead seeps through and makes it to the headliner and exits through the lights in the cabin that are close to the rearview mirror, and then the rest of the leak runs down the inside of my headliner, into the inside of the shell piece that connects the headliner to the dash, through the dash and out the bottom directly under the dash and where the drainline would usally exit the car. This also seems like a poor design problem cause theres nothing that looks like it should be guiding the water into the drainline on the sunroof itself, even tho water would hit all exposed parts of an open sunroof, the only part that it can drain in is the lowest part, which seems like water would roll to the drainline but the angle of the car doesnt seem to allow that or theres holes in there that it falls through before it gets to the drainline and just goes straight to the headliner. I guess my question is, where should i attempt to put sealant or should i see if its missing seals or how should i attempt approaching this situation, being its not just replacing something, but more than likely adding something thats never been there before.

Thanks for the video. Some plastic clips broke in my 04 expy and since i hardly ever drive the thing i got it into the closed position and thought all was well, and it was, for a while. My driver's side started leaking down the A pillar. It's likely the drain tube as it happened before and it was the drain tube clogged up. The 04 has a smaller drain outlet i believe. Anyway, i can't open my sunroof so i'm gonna say "fuck it" and put some heavy duty HVAC tape over a layer of silicone and just seal the entire sunroof. After looking this up I have found that Ford has made GARBAGE sunroofs for well over a decade! Not cool. Great truck but damn, i wish it never even came with a sunroof! I never even used it and when i did it cracked the plastic piece that attached to the rails...... Damn you ford!!! haha. Thanks for the video, again. Much appreciated

Josh okay Josh just to let you know that is the typical answer to a uneducated half-wit mechanic I have had the same sunroof in my vehicle for over 21 years every year I clean the tracks Andre lubricate with dry lube which is a lubrication that will not attract dirt and I have never had a problem the problem is people don't know how to take care of things it's just like a transmission people have problems go to the transmission shop and the transmission shop says you need a complete rebuild transmission and then the asshole who owns the car says oh these cars suck and they make bad Transmissions and then the transmission shop acts when was the last time they changed the fluid and the answer was never, I'll fucking defective and stupid can you be

@@willsrestorations If you are half as smart as you think you are why don't tell us where in the the service manual it says to service the sun roof and why the dealer doesn't tell one to maintain it as is common knowledge for a transmission............oh yeah it doesn't, does it ........oh ...guess you're the the dumb f..k.

Do you know how to repair a roof leak on a 1997 F150 at the third high brake light? I've tried everything including replacing the brake light and it still leaks. Very frustrating especially during leaky weather.

For now...I just used some duct tape on the top of the sunroof for now to keep the water out. I found a actual outside seal to fix the issue. The seal that goes around the sunroof its self is weak and is letting way to much water coming in....a little to much for the sunroof tray to handle. The seal is $100 though ;( It should take are of the issue.

Maybe the rubber shrinks as it gets old, it's worth a try. Duct tape has slowed down the torrent to a trickle... but I still need to wear a raincoat in the car. Thanks for the info.

These CEO's need to have the water torture applied to them for ever releasing such a poorly engineered item. When it is not leaking the flimsy plastic is breaking merely from time. Pure garbage at an extremely high price. Won't bother the executives and idiot engineers who all drive European cars. They should be required to take back at full market value all their cars with sun roofs. Sure encourages mold and mildew. You are dead on right that the only fix is pulling the entire sun roof and replacing and resealing the entire unit.

Yes. I am so possed bexauof this shit design that goes on now over two decades. That i don't by a VW anymore. Sad but im done. I don't care of Volkswagen shutts the plants in Germany down. Such a poor engineering hasn't deserved a made in Germany. To me it seems they use for ecery shit made in Germany just to grab the money snd not providing the old good post WWII quality. Running into the same issue with my 2012 ford explorer that I purchased used about a month ago. The liftgate was also leaking in the standard spot that everyone seems to have issues with (lift gate hinge). I sealed that and no longer have any issues with leaking in the rear of the vehicle. I am, unfortunately still having issues with water coming in from the area of the dome light. Seeing how so may people have this issue and the complexity of trying to repair it...I was thinking just sealing the whole damn sunroof! Think about it. Opening the sunroof doesn't really have any benefits. As long as the shade slide functions then I think that's good enough. Any thoughts on how to seal a sunroof? And wether or not it's a good idea long term.

My wife wants a new vehicle with a sun roof so bad. I've bitched about sun roofs and convertibles to her until the cows came home. They are pointless vehicle destroyers. LEAKS LEAKS LEAKS. I've told her why buy something that going to leak like a sieve and ruin your vehicle. I like my vehicles with no sun roofs and I'll never own a convertible. Convertibles are major rip offs. They should pay you to take them piles of junk. But nope they want you to pay more for a drop top. I think not!

Thanks for the great video, and showing us an often unrecognized problem with these sun and moon roofs. Did anyone try leaving this type of vehicle in the hot sun long enough to dry that area completely, and then cleaning the area with denatured alcohol, 95% isopropyl alcohol or acetone, letting it dry for a few minutes, then resealing it with silicone, using either a syringe and/or a palette knife to get the sealant under the track and in all the places it needed to go. If you drilled out the rivet on this type of setup, you might get enough slack to get the sealant under there; replacing a rivet is simple. Use painter's to mask the track and other areas that don't need sealant; helps keep from making a mess.
