Its a very labor intensive job curious to how long it took over what period of time, three days, a week? Extra effort to remove the seats makes sense but more work. How about the back deck would you do it the same way? My wife would never let me do that on the living room floor. Final results look great.
@gsmecanica5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mario! It took like 10 days, since it was done mostly during the weekends. Today 2019, it is still looking and holding like the 1st day :)

By the way Momus has a video on how to remove the headliner with a bit more detail. It is part of an eight part remodel I believe. This was excellent anyway.

Gonzalo my friend. Most excellent job. You shoulda added some audio commentary. I believe I noticed you using a heat gun. Questions were raised about the solvents you used, and how heavily you brushed both sides of the fabric. You also mentioned "thinning the contact cement". But by how much. Whoops... I just noticed you're most fluent in Spanish...meaning my German is probably useless here. If you don't fully get the drift of what I"m trying to say, I LOVED you video, and language aside, it's given me the confidence to do what you did. Muy bueno and thumbs UP big time!!!!!!!!
@gsmecanica7 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! Yes we speak Spanish here in Buenos Aires ;) I try to avoid audio comments but I guess that at some point they help a lot to clarify things. I will take your suggestion for future videos. Allow me to clarify those items for you: -You should apply a nice thick coat to the headliner, but a light coat on the fabric. You don't want a thick coat on the fabric since it could transfer to the other side. In fact if you have a spray gun, that is most recommended because it will coat evenly all surface. -I used a heat gun to try to make the fabric more elastic and stretch on some points where I needed it. Eg those pockets where the sun blind screws go. -Solvent used is called Fortex 101, it is a contact cement (also resistant to high temperatures) sold here in Buenos Aires. But any high quality contact cement adhesive and its solvent will do the job. Any local store will provide you with those products. -Expect to dilute it 3 to 1. That is 3 parts of contact cement to 1 part of solvent (aprox). That is the ratio I felt comfortable working with. Using way to make solvent will ruin the fabric I guess since it is more liquid... Let me know how the job went on your headliner, good luck!

Good vid. Why didnt you use the spray adhesive for the headliner? I bought 2 cans of adhesive spray 3m 08080 and foam backed fabric liner. Was yours foam backed also?
@gsmecanica6 жыл бұрын
Because the spray is expensive and hard to find here in Buenos Aires, at least the 3M brand. Mine was not foam backed, since the local automotive shop advised me to use another one. But the foam backed one should be easier to apply. Good luck!

Thank you for making the video! How did you get the new fabric under the metal frame of the dome light?
@gsmecanica4 жыл бұрын
You need to remove the lights as shown at 11:35 and then for the metal frame you just cut it flush since that is the way it comes originally.

FoodShowFan there are 2 covers you need to pry in order to discover both screws. Take a small flat screw driver and pry on each side of the covers.

Great job .. do you mind telling me what kind of fabric is that? i mean where did you buy it ( i know you don't live in the USA .. but i will try to find the same material ) .. and why didn't you use the 3M Spray cans ? .. Thanks,.
@gsmecanica6 жыл бұрын
I don't know the exact name of the fabric I used sorry. I bought it in a fabric automotive store. A foam-backed fabric would have been easier to mold but seems that they don't last long due to the foam aging itself. Just buy it at least 3mm thick and if it could stretch a little bit it's going to be easier to mold it! I liked the 3M 90 but is was too expensive and hard to find here in Buenos Aires. In addition, I was recommended to use a contact cement for fabrics instead. But it has been 1 year now and everything still looks great ;)
@Dr2009king6 жыл бұрын
Amazing !! .. i will try to find any good fabric to use .. and i do agree with you about the foam, it doesn't last .

Yo tengo un 318 is coupe con el techo todo panzeado.... el tema mio es como sacar el techo de adentro... Sera que sale por la puerta delantera=
@gsmecanica7 жыл бұрын
Si, en los coupe es más fácil porque las puertas son mas largas que en los sedan. Si ves que te cuesta, entonces quita el asiento delantero y vas a tener más espacio para quitar el techo por ahí. Saludos!

A week probably. I didn't have much daily time to spend and I did it myself, so it took me longer. Some people do not spend too much time removing the old contact cement and just spray over it. I did remove it all to make sure it lasts 20 more years ;)
