Great review. I appreciate how thorough you are. Of course nothing beats a real amp and pedals, but out of all the units I’ve tried ( Quad Cortex, Boss GT100, Tone Master Pro and the Line 6 HX lineup) I stayed with the HeadRush Core. I also like the Line 6 lineup but the Helix was too big what I needed. The HR Core is a better size, easy to use and with the right IR combination, it’s not bad for digital. Thanks for the awesome reviews that you make.
@jedi_4176 күн бұрын
I’ve tried to get along with the Helix more than once. Tried different IRs and spent hours tweaking things and was never really happy. I’ve owned a Fractal AX8 and an FM3. Both were great, but the learning curve was intense. I’m between the Headrush Core and the Boss GT-1000 core. The Headrush has more amps, but the Boss has less than 1 millisecond of latency and that is very appealing to me. Why do you prefer the Headrush over the Boss?

Tony, as always, you’re the man!!! I just purchased one of these based on your detailed review. From what I can tell, you are the only true and trustworthy source for in-depth gear reviews. 99% or the stuff out there starts off with “The good folks at _______ sent this over for review.”…….Next. On a side note, I called my wife over and put this on the big screen when you pulled out the Ibanez. Her jaw dropped to the floor. Haha exact quote: “could you imagine if your grandpa could do that.” 😂😂😂 Thanks Tony.

Ha love it... :) Many times I have had younger people tell me they 'wished I was their grandad' :) and I get it. I am variable of course depending on inspiration from the gear I find. Honestly, I am flattered that you bought the unit and loved it - I like that one too. It's all subjective of course. It costs me substantial money to run my channel and while I do get some money back from KZbin (not a lot!) in reality I pay 40% tax off that, which makes the whole thing as far as money is concerned a big fat loss and let's not mention the time and effort. BUT - I love to show and use gear. It's a bit like a wonderland to any guitarist, checking out this, hearing that, and of course looking inside - exactly what we should do. So thanks for the post and for watching - appreciated.

Love the way you broke this down. Clear and concise. When it comes to stock sounds on all of these modelers, the consensus is they are all sh*t across the board. Most of us are using 3rd party irs and captures anyways. I've owned every modeler except for the quad cortex and the kemper, but have tried these, and the head rush core is the easiest to use. It's criminally underrated imo

I get your point exactly. However, here's the reason I show the standard stuff as supplied. Now think about this. Every maker wants to show their equipment in the best way they can - and those pre-sets (in some cases) might have cost thousands to create. Ask ANY maker if they supply s**t pre-sets and the answer will be unanimous... now we don't they will say. And for many new guys, they will only have those pre-sets. Of course we all do generally mod or change or buy better - but I always think that if they put bad pre-sets in there then I SHOULD show them - actually good or bad. And some gear does have good tones (at least some). Good post and thanks for watching too. I liked the core too. :)

Thanks for another great review!! Your reviews are becoming more and more valuable. The over hyped reviews being dropped from the usual suspects are rinse and repeat. Curious how you feel about manufactures sending these products out for reviews at mass. KZbin is swamped with the Fender Tone Master Pro & Friedman IR-X at the moment.
@tonymckenzieofficial Жыл бұрын
Glad you like them! They take a lot to do on my part. I bought the Fender Tone Master Pro for review only and received it yesterday. I have been on that all day until a couple of hours ago. I STOPPED that review. I'll make a video of my personal opinion and when Fender wake up later I'll either come back and recreate the review with something that should be for sale, or just sell it. This Headrush currently is BETTER. The Headrush CORE was ready for market, whereas the Fender Tone Master Pro is released before it should be, and I can guess why too. Trust me, currently (as of TODAY) I would buy the Headrush CORE and not buy the Fender Tone Master Pro. IMO these so called reviewers all posting 'reviews' that were clearly not quite what I found so far I don't like to see - and they just harped on about only the positive stuff. Personally, I can imagine someone saving up for eons and buying the Fender only to be let down in the most basic of ways. Watch my video when it goes on there. Then tell me those guys were right... and that is what the problem is, not just for one company, but for all of them - some are much worse than others. I always tell it the way it is, whether good or bad. To date I have had just ONE sponsor never speak to me again... because I mentioned something they did not like. That is a sad situation really don't you think. I do. And you know, I'm a business guy, I 'get it' of course, they are companies that have to sell, but reviews that are only biased towards what they want you to see (in the favor of the item) is not really the right thing to do. There's an opinion. Thanks for watching.

Hi Tony! great to see the insides of a product & detailed review! I am interested in its capability of simultaneous decent vocals & guitar effects to use ampless into a mixer then PA for small gigs but I am concerned about some of the critiques I have heard; like their slow customer service or response from their forum so you can actually access their cloud! Also supposedly, the original Pedalboard had an electrical grounding design flaw which created the motherboard failure “Rainbow of Death” also USB port failures. Has this been resolved for the Headrush Core? Tony, have you & your friend continued to use the core & did it run stable? thanks!
@tonymckenzieofficial7 ай бұрын
Hi there, you have many questions that (some of) I have not been asked before. The CORE compared to the PRIME unit worked better for us here. The prime had issues re internet connectivity etc, whereas the CORE worked perfect right out of the box. I never used the customer services for the CORE, but if I remember I did contact them re the connectivity of the PRIME... it was no slower than IK Multimedia that took a week to even reply to a problem on their software. Service matters to me because I was at one stage a 'Service Manager' - bad service costs customers. I can't really say yea or nay about the service from many of the companies that I look at products - they tend to be a bit so so. Some of the amp companies are better. I have not seen the 'rainbow' you mention, and USB failures can happen on ANY equipment, but again I have not seen any of that on any simulator type of gear. But I tend to be careful what I do with USB ports. The CORE I still have, the PRIME I sold simply because of its large size... but I did that on the Helix floor unit to replace it with a Helix rack - much better for me. I do get to hear people sometimes knock product A or product B and tell me 'its rubbish tones' on many different pieces of gear... but it tends to be a bit subjective (and it certainly is affected by the style someone plays) so I tend to say things based on what I find and I try to NOT watch too many (or any) reviews before I make mine. That way hopefully I get something across about the actual unit I review and that my comments are from a clean piece of paper showing what I found. If I keep some gear, its most likely that I like it, as I ALWAYS sell the gear I don't like or get on with. Maybe I should create a video showing what I own as opposed to what I sold... that would tell so much to others I think. The CORE was and is stable here, but it's not used as much as many might because I really do have an arsenal of gear to use and its a recording studio rather than a stage... Sincerely hope this helps a bit, but there is nothing like trying out the gear YOURSELF, bear in mind the naysayers and the positive stuff as well and make up your own mind... every player is different and honestly what might work for a 'metaler' might not work for others in differing styles of music. Thanks for watching.

Your right I could not find a manual yet for the unit, looked all over Fender site, esp. the support section. For me it needs lots of updates and upgrades way to pricey. Needs loads more Amps/for choices. where are the Brown face, the other earlier tweeds, the silverfaces? And that is just Fender amps. how's about a Dumble type/amplified nation. Trainwreck style. Magnatone. Pitch shifting Vibrato?? Must have much better. What I have heard sounds good. One Tester said it would be nothing thru Firmware for the Unit to do Capture/Profiling. Despite the hardware being almost the same I'm not too confident the DSP issue with Core can be fixed with an optimization update. I've tried this with numerous rigs and what I'm observing is that Core doesn't push as much DSP as Prime.

Can you say why such devices use external power supply, instead of building it in and just using the IEC power plug? I find it highly annoying to carry a very specific power supply; it's easy to lose or break, and difficult (and expensive) to replace. Meanwhile IEC cables are dime a dozen, always easy to find a spare. Only the biggest boards use IEC cable straight in...... Thanks for your in depth reviews, especially the look inside on the guts - it's great news that footswitches are so easily replaceable, considering they are the most abused part on such devices.

Thank you so much for your objective and detailed review! Currently I'm using a headbrush mx5 and I found out that the headbrush prime and core are using the same processor as the mx5. It seems to be accepted that there is no difference in sound because of this, what do you think in reality? Is there any significant improvement in sound quality compared to mx5? Also, are there a lot of amp cloner capture that can be used in the headrush cloud?
@tonymckenzieofficial10 ай бұрын
HeadRush: I think that the whole products are dependent on the overall features and the way that the tones are created in the first place as well as the IR's used. It's all so variable and no one ever mentions that there could be differences in the software... there are so many that, on the internet, assume thios or that about gear, but they don't actually know. Well raised point and thanks for watching.

The Core and the Prime share the same touch screen software and sound engine, the Core is obviously smaller but you loose foot switches etc. you gave the Prime a score of 7, so is the Core a 10 simply because you prefer the form factor. I think the size is subjective, my brother and I both have the Prime and he also has a Core, he uses the Core as a fly rig and shares patches between them, but he uses the Prime when playing with the full band as the Primes extra foot switches make it more convenient in that setting. Tool for the job perhaps, but sound wise they are exactly the same, so maybe the Prime should have got a higher score ?
@tonymckenzieofficial2 ай бұрын
Sadly, when I reviewed the Prime it was flawed because of firmware and wireless that did not operate well. Indeed the wireless was poor to bad. In the Prime review I showed EXACTLY what I bought - no frills etc. Some might criticize my review... but that's how the unit was sold at review time. On the other hand, when I bought the CORE it worked perfectly and flawlessly throughout the review as expected. For that reason the CORE had a higher score than the Prime. Of course, a later version of the Prime might operate better - (indeed I know it does), but I can only show what they sold me at that time. This is the reason you saw different scores etc. So the dilemma is, should I 'assume' the Prime (as presented) did not have the flaws and basically tell you how good it 'might be in the future'... or not. I have always preferred to show the gear as I find it at the time. Fenders Tone Master Pro was similar in this respect - the version they sold me was at best at that time of the review for that unit, was pretty much junky - and I said so. I plan to come back to that unit as it has changed since. Thanks for the comment - its appreciated and I wanted to clarify why the two Headrush devices reflected different scores overall. ANY flaw I find will always contribute to a lower score but as in this case the Prime will have improved with firmware that works. Thanks for watching...

Interesting. I guess they put another processor to take care of the new things (wi-fi, bluetooth, maybe the stomps) and free the main processor for more blocks and cloning.

Tony how would you compare the core againt the Nux trident you just reviewed soundwise?
@tonymckenzieofficial Жыл бұрын
It's just a subjective question really, what one likes another will not. For me, the NUX was right there with pretty good tones for less than half the price AND with software. However, the NUX did not have that screen which dominates the CORE. They are both to be considered. Which takes me to the Fender Tone Master Pro. The CORE is currently better and I'll be covering that presently. Thanks for watching.

I bet all Prime downsides compared to this Core are result of older firmware. This Core must've been shipped with the firmware, which you would get on Prime via updating, which is expected given the Prime was released half-a-year earlier. P.S. Oh, btw Core is exactly $1K USD now.

That might well be the case and I don't disagree. In any case this worked flawlessly... which is more than I can say for the Fender Tone Master Pro... more later. Thanks for watching.

Hi, Question from guitarist / vocalist. I am very close to taking the plunge with a new Core, so quick question: If I use the 5-Rig Mode to have my 5 seperate rigs (1 rig per footswitch), can I also then have my vocals run through this seperately? so I can run my vocals through this unit with vocal effects while also switching through the rigs during songs? Or will i just need to use a split signal chain on each of my rigs and have the vocal chain set up the exact same on each rig, so my vocals do not change when clicking through my rigs during the same song. Thanks, Love your vids

@@tonymckenzieofficial No wories Tony, and thanks for the reply, I can imagine you are busy alright so all good. Yeah it is hard to get info on the web about the vocal section of this unit and all the vocal capabilities and how to get it to work best for a singer / player like myself. I may just need to take the plunge to find out for myself, either way it will probably be money well spent and a new toy to play around and gig with. Hopefully someone can chime in here. Cheers

I never saw anything regarding API calls. They might exist, but you would have to ask the Headrush boys about those. I am familiar with API re my day job but ask the maker as I saw nothing relating to API's. Having said that I was not looking. Thanks and good question. Thanks for watching.

It has a nice big display, and it sounds good played clean, i would have liked to have heard your Ibanez clean! But for me it is a total overkill as i would never use 99% of it's capabilities. I have to live in the real world these days and can't justify paying this sort of money for a very expensive toy. You can spend days playing around with all the settings only to never find the one you liked best again. If you can justify one of these, then great, but all that money and no software.
@tonymckenzieofficial Жыл бұрын
Yes they are not cheap for sure. In this CORE, I have to say it certainly was easy... the software might well be concerning to some I agree also. BUT: Here's the issue where I see it currently: while all these types of devices offer reasonably good effects, the amp/speaker/ir/etc. does vary somewhat. I just bought the Fender Tone Master Pro to review (the only reason for me). And you know what this Headrush CORE currently eats the Fender alive for many reasons... (video coming presently and its not pretty!). Of the two items this HeadRush would be my first choice currently. It might/will change, but Fender honestly need kicking for releasing a product as they have... more on that later. I always value your opinion... and you make valid points for sure - so always do post your thoughts... appreciated. And thanks for watching.

I agree with Tony a lot of this is subjective. I owned the Helix Stomp and loved the software, but when I bought the Headrush MX5 I sold the Helix, the MX5 just sounded better to me and gave me more of the feel and sound I expect from playing a tube amp, but everyone is different and will like different things. The MX5 is great, I would buy a Core for the larger screen but cannot afford it at the moment. When you take into account the number of effects you get, the ability to to record with no latency right into your computer, etc. I think these units are great value for money and not toys. Glad we have Tony to objectively tell us about this gear. Looking forward to the Fender review but I think there is a Core in my future. Software would be nice and I am not sure why it is not a priority for Headrush, I can only guess the cost of development is to expensive for the company as it stands.

Headrush has always been standalone because editing is so easy. The older models required USB to PC to update firmware and upload/download to cloud. Prime and Core do not require a PC at all! I think if they come out with an editor it will just be an import of the Headrush screen to the PC and I would think using a mouse and cursor would actually be more cumbersome!

In my opinion, it wouldn't be much of an additional benefit on the Headrush boards. The tone sculpting and everything you need has been designed to be immediately available on the device as a hardware unit. That is the huge advantage of these units over others. They are very simple to use but do not lack sculpting possibilities. I'm not a tootal fanboy, as they have their quirks. On something like the HX Stomp, etc, they have the HX Edit and used as a .vst in a DAW, along with the software configuration. For that, the software IS helpful alongside the hardware, as you have to menu-dive on the device as it's designed with a different level of complexity. I've owned both (Stomp and Prime). On the Headrush Prime or Core, additional software is just not needed. All the parameters are available and on display right there. Having software wouldn't make sense, as it approaches the job much differently that the comparable MFX boards.
