What is an IR?

A lot of people are coming to modellers who are used to amps and cabs, but they are not used to IRs and all the other terminology found in these devices, so here's a down & dirty quick starter guide to IR's..

Very interesting. Thank you. I have been using IRs for a while and I didn't know the difference with the stock cab models. As an idea for a future video I'm eager to see a video where someone integrates a Headrush Pedalboard with the new Tonex pedal. I haven't been able to find it anywhere yet. You need a Tonex pedal though.

Tonex is an AI amp sim platform, I guess it would give more Amp options within the Headrush , but I also think gigging musicians buy something like the Headrush to get everything under one roof, so their use together whilst powerful might not be practical. Also, I don't know much but the next gen Headrush is on the horizon, I saw some teasers of its abilities and we might be sorted for amp options ;) (Look through Tracii Guns' facebook page)

Thanks! But since IR's include cab sound, if I run my headrush into the power amp of a boss katana, I can't use the integrated cabs then? I should just use an amp in my headrush, no cab no IR?

That's how I would do it, why have a modelled speaker and cab playing through a real speaker and cab? The Katana is a guitar amp and the cab and speaker have been designed to behave in a certain way. No need to send it a model of what it's already doing. Having said that if you like the sound with your IR on .. leave it on. :)

Yes, the "Cab" literally refers to the wooden cabinet the speaker is in, the cabinet effects the sounds quite a lot, open back, closed back, ported, etc etc.. the IR captures everything from the speaker, to the cabinet it's in, the microphone used to measure it and the room it's all in.. any duplication of that chain will confuse things.

​@@gratengelsker7614 You can or should try it both ways. With and without the IR. I did the same. Choose what sounds best to your ears. There is no "wrong or right. " Honestly, most often I would engage the IR. Because it just sounded better to MY ears. 😊

A small correction. IRs aren't just for speakers! You can make IRs for anything that affects sound: Amps (that's how Kempers & Headrushs Amp Clone feature works), Rooms (that's how Convolution Reverbs work), FX boxes, etc.

I didn't say they're just for speakers :) I said they are a measurement of a cabinet, a speaker, microphone, and a room, which in this usage case they are,. Obviously similar techniques measure profiles in the Kemper or Clones in the Prime, but those files are not interchangeable like IR's are, otherwise we'd all be running Kemper profiles with our IR loaders. Now wouldn't that be nice.

Nah! being distractive and pedantic will get you nowhere, any ir is merely a simulation of a speaker cabinet in operation in conjunction with whatever guitar happens to be being used through it is all, -it's better termed as a more direct depiction as a 'cab sim' instead.

Insert an external source IR's in milion dollar guitar pedal is just make no sense....i mean headrush can do everything you just need time to tweak it more deeper..

I agree to an extent, but the IR I use all the time definitely sounds better than any cabinet in the Headrush. plus you get low and high cut controls on an IR which you don't get in a Headrush stock cab. That all being said I never use IRs on my song rigs that I upload here so that anyone can use the settings. :)
