We will take a look at how to use the Headrush MX5 with the Morningstar MC6 midi controller.
We will program the switches on the MC6 to turn on and off the blocks / effects in the MX5.
We will also program the MC5 to call the different menus that we program in the MC6 that correspond with the different rigs created in the MX5.
If you want to hear what the Headrush Rigs sound like in a full mix feel free to check out my music videos as I use Headrush FX in all my songs.

This is a great controller and it does everything you expect in a midi controller. I like that it supports adding a separate analog supported midi switcher so basically you could control your whole rig without touching anything but just this device. I was hoping to do that with the HR pedalboard as my master controller, but the midi features are just not advanced enough.

@@ThePaddedPedalroom The mx5 is a lot of processing in a little unit. Love the workflow with the touchscreen more than any multi effects unit I’ve used before. This is my first IR device so I need to find some good ones to add. Seems like the way to go versus amp models. I’m running this with a Blueguitar Amp 1. Still working out where to put it in the flow. Tried 4 cable, after drives, and even parallel effects loop which was cool. So many options. The MC6 would push me into button heaven on a very small amp setup.

@@dr.gregoryweisswassernd7251 I totally understand, I have spent over the last 2 years discovering Headrush, I have the Gigboard and now the MX5, which I love its small form factor. I have decided that I like the amp models in the system but paired with good 3rd party IR's, currently I have a few IR's from Celestion, I have Sonic DNA's Doc McFarland IR pack and I have the IR pack from Fuzzlord Effects, and with those I truly don't find the need for anything else. When Using IR's it is important to bring the High cut down from 20000Hz to about 5 to 6000 Hz and to bring the low cut up to about 60 to 90Hz, that makes it sound more real, it mimics the natural frequencies that a speaker cab would have. Enjoy your Rig, they are lots of fun.

This might be nitpicky, but the midi TRS connection is 1/8” TRS, not 1/16”. May not be an issue for most, but figured it mention it in case anyone not familiar with midi was confused, especially as 3.5mm midi connections can be confusing enough.

You can control up to 4 parameters per bank with the expression pedal. but you are limited to an A and B with the MX5 so you could have your built in pedal for A and control up to 4 different parameters and have an external pedal to control B which can control another 4 parameters. you can check this video I made going through that. You can not however have an A, B, C, D, that is only possible from what I see on the Prime. I hope this helps.

My Pleasure. I chose this controller because of its flexibility and ease of use, the Morningstar software seemed easy to me. It has clear instructions and software, lots of support and videos of how to use. I am sure any other midi controller could also do the job as well, it depends on if you like the user interface. I am not familiar with how the Blackstar live works but it seems to have decent software to program it, if you like it I am sure you can make it work. Thanks for your comment. I will look into this some more, but from what I can see the MC6 would be capable of doing this if the mx5 programming would allow this, unfortunately at this moment there are no PC codes available for rigs to be called upon directly by a button. Maybe write an email to headrush and request this option, they could always expand the software in a future update and make this possible to do.

Can you do this but with scenes? For example, I have a few songs that require more than 3 scenes, what I’ve been doing is duplicating my rig and on the duplicate rig I’ll add the 4th or 5th scene. Changing rigs in the middle of a song is annoying on the MX5. Would I be able to use this controller to just have one rig and then put the additional scenes on the controller? I want to get this controller but only if I can use it for scenes and not just individual blocks. Thanks!

HI Roberto, The morning star is capable of doing that it is only limited by the program of what it is controlling. in this case the mx5 does not have that option available in their midi programming code. perhaps if Headrush has enough requests for this, they can update the software to permit that. the only way at this moment with the headrush to activate multiple pedals at the same time would be using scenes, if you create a scene with multiple pedals on that will work.

There is no CC code for either the mx5 or the gigboard for that. the morning star can accept two expression pedals but the headrush does not have a cc code for that. however you can add a second expression pedal to your mx5 directly by plugging it into expression input and you can program it in the hardware assign, so you could use the mx5 built in expression for one thing and a secondary expression for another. also remember that in the hardware assign you can actually assign 4 tasks per expression pedal. I hope this helps.
@uburoibob
@uburoibob 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePaddedPedalroom Right. With my Gigboard, an expression pedal plugged to EXP 1 with CC#1 emulates whichever expression pedal is active from using the external toe-switch (which I use an MXR TAP to control). On my MX5, EXP 1 on the MIDI switcher only handles EXP A (via CC#1), while B, as you said, doesn't have a MIDI call and is plugged directly into the MX5. The nice thing about the MX5 is I can use both A and B at once with two external pedals (A through MIDI and B plugged directly) and with the rest of the MIDI buttons, keep the unit off the floor while practicing. Or, just take the tiny pedal to a gig and put a Dunlop Mini X pedal next to it and have both at once. Which is what I am doing, while actively lobbying Headrush to give us full MIDI controls so there's only one cable coming from either unit. I primarily use the expression pedals to control mix, mod, and feedback on delays. BTW, great videos!

@@ThePaddedPedalroom Hi mate - thanks for the reply! So both the bias mini head & Headrush Mx5 will work with a midi board that can send and receive PC messages - any suggestions on a midi board?

@@jackmesser7148 the Morning Star MC6 is good but if you do not need as many buttons you could use the mc3 if not you could look at the Hotone Ampero Control 4 - Button Bluetooth midi controller, it may be more accessible. however there is a way for you to send a signal from the headrush mx5 to your amp, you may want to try and see if you could use scenes in the mx5 to get the effects you want on while sending a signal to your amp to change channels on your amp.

@@ThePaddedPedalroom So I have setup the following on MX5: Rig 1: Midi Program 11 Rig 2: Midi Program 12 Both these midi channels correspond with amp presets saved to the Bias Mini head, however when I changed rigs the channel does not change; regardless of me checking both amp and pedal board have the same assigned midi presets. I am a little lost for what to do!

@@jackmesser7148 I would say you could ask your question directly to Headrush, they seem to be very responsive and helpful, you might be able to find out if what you are trying to do is possible. If not maybe ask Doc McFarland, kzbin.info he is a master when it comes to the Headrush, I think he has dabbled a little with the midi function in the headrush.

Hi Music NonStop, I just looked up the Mwave midi controller, and I can't see why it would not work. it is at a really good price too, I might have to pick one up to do some tests. let me know how it goes for you.👍

I was looking aging, just make sure you get the model that has the wireless midi conector, as the mx5 can not receive bluetooth.

Is it possible to change rigs with midi? I cant figure that out. Not using a morningstar though… good video anyway
@ThePaddedPedalroom
@ThePaddedPedalroom 2 жыл бұрын
The only way you can change the rigs with midi is if you program the buttons to copy footswitch 1,2 and 3 then you can use that to bank up and down, but you may as well just do that on your mx5 buttons and leave the other buttons free for other functions. if you look at page 28 of the mx5 manual you will find the midi control CC codes, this is what the mx5 is limited to control. maybe if at some point Headrush expand the software in an update to include new cc codes that will change but at this moment this is all that can be controlled by a midi controller.

@@ThePaddedPedalroom Thanks for the answer. Then i can stop scratching my head for now 😂 the thing is, after the latest update they removed the function to change rigs from inside the looper… a feature I miss very much now. That’s why I want to change rigs with midi now. I’ll have to wait and see if they add more midi commands.

@@mikael.cherin In that case leave your mx5 in stomp rig mode and program your midi controller with the looper functions this way you can do both at the same time.
