Heads Will Roll: Reforged lets the player to take a role of an ordinary medieval soldier who finds himself in the middle of the legendary Hundred Years War between the kings of England and France. You start your way as a simple footman, whose sole ambition is to survive, but with proper skill and cunning or through blood and preservation, you might soon see yourself becoming one of the most famous knights of your time.
This game is a unique type of RPG with survival mechanics and turn-based combat that requires player to make careful decision both inside and outside the fight. The sophisticated combat system utilizes many different parameters including characters’ stats and attributes, familiarity and proficiency with certain weapons, weapon length, fatigue level, various traumas and injuries, as well as hundreds of different items and consumables.

I got very into the game because of watching this series and where Random Peasant #1 managed to become a mercenary captain in Brittany, my most successful guy Athelstan VIII died a pauper fighting for a rebel band in England. What a game.

Can't help but notice that when an ally is on the field, all attacks will be directed at him. So essentially, a squad member is a ~70 florins item for ~3 turns of total immunity. A good way to set up a tough fight, break shields and let the enemy exhaust itself without a worry in the world. And if the DLC does let you control your allies, well... I envision the saddest meta possible, where that ally becomes a tank that never attacks while you leisurely hit anything freely. The current meatshield meta is actually better than this. Another silly thing is how the fatigue mechanic is fairly realistic, with combattants needing constant breaks and halberds dominating... but that makes sense in a formation. Watching a lonesome guy solo a mob is already in the realm of fantasy. But eh, it's the mechanics, and the game already established that the soldiers could read maps so... we had long left reality anyway.

I'm not sure why enemies are targeting the ally, but I can say this is not my experience typically. In many of my previous (i.e. suboptimal) playthroughs, I was often targeted, seemingly more often than my ally but surely more often than this playthrough. Maybe it's related to to-hit or how easy to kill. Maybe it's just RNG.

@@TortugaPower It's definitely related to to-hit chances. Allies (the AI in general) usually starts fights by going full ham, while the player is likely to try to cautiously open up the opponents. When I fought much more aggressively (trying to save my squad, and because they weren't attacking me) leaving myself open by resting a lot less, the AI suddenly switched from attacking them to attacking me.

​​@@TortugaPoweryep Tortuga, random peasant just has too much endurance and good enough agility for this stage with how focused you were on training. Not to mention you always stay at fresh. The plebs with less than 10 stats have practically 0 hit chance so they target your allies instead. Who are sadly plebs with barely 5 stats because of reputation + not insanely high prestige.

Bertrand du Guesclin is incredibly famous in French history, a major figure of the first part of the hundred years war, you should absolutely google him (and you'll find the right pronunciation for his name too) ; love this series !

I could help with the pronunciation, I'm from Belgium and speak a bit of french. Not that your pronouniation is bothering me, I find it funny how English speaking people struggle with French.

@@TheLordsOfTheDucks I can't speak for all English speakers, but out of all the languages (especially among romance languages, but even German or Japanese), French is the hardest. In my Rule the Waves series I dread playing as or fighting against the French.

Well, I mean the PROBLEM with starting to edit out battles, is that if you leave a battle IN, we'll know you are going to die! ;-p So you can cut SOME out, but have to leave in some--like with really good opponents, or great loot afterwards, or something, so there is some suspense. DOES seem like the long reach and great stamina is the key here, so don't think of next run, he ... could ... go .. all ... the ... way!

So, how useful are squadmates actually? Are they worth it simply for being meatshields or do they actually become useful combatants later on?

For me, the jury is still out! I feel like they should be more than that and I haven't figured it out yet. Otherwise, maybe they need a rebalance. Although I thought DLC alters them, so we'll see.

The preponderance of poisoned weapons by the AI mercenaries seems to be quite an annoyance.
