The moment you begin the mercenary chapter you must immediately meet Olivia, doing so will give you some reputation from her, a mission and get the chance to meet the guy you can buy more mercenaries from. Don't waste your time upgrading the mercenaries, just use them as your meat shield And do every mission you can before the time runs out

you'll be able to recruit more troops after continuing with the main storyline, the original window to hire was the only chance to get them for "free"

I was extremely excited when I saw the troop management system in this game, but sadly found it needs to be buffed a great deal it's a huge money sink and even on a character with 3000 gold I could only make my troops mediocre at best only for the best troop I could equip only being able to hit 10% of the time like NPCs in act 1 and 2 looking forward to seeing how you handle it.

Oh yeah, they definitely need to nerf those costs by half. first time i tried i didnt pay enough attention and went almost broke from them being that level of pricey

Personally I think they should be treated as fodder to put enemies in an exhausted state for harder fights. For Easier fights just don't get the squad. Alternatively, any unit that gets in a fight gains exp. If you can place a guy in slot 4 and keep him alive, he can become a "him" and be your sweeper unit. Very unreliable, though, and expensive since you can't afford to lose him or your investment is wasted.

You can use the cross symbol in the top left to apply whatever is in your pouch to your companion. So if he's bleeding you can apply a bandage or tourniquet. If he's poisoned you can apply any antidote that you have in your pouch. You can also switch out companions using the rightmost icon in the top left. This is useful to switch out companions if they get stunned but switching costs you 10 stamina. You can equip your companions with whatever you have in your inventory for weapons, helmets, armor, and accessories. I like to give my crossbowmen poisoned bolts. Usually their default armor is pretty trash so that gets replaced right away. Hiring companions is done through soclalize, whose person changes depending on which of the various scenarios you end up in, the sergeant being one in multiple instances. If I remember correctly, after talking to Dupont, you have to go back to Olivia in this scenario to get the recruitment option from her. Your companions are pretty much cannon fodder until they get a lot of level ups in. That requires a lot of money. I only got one playthrough in which I managed to not lose all of them and most of the time I didn't have enough money to level up all of them. Initially it's easier for costs just to hire two and level them up and purchase more once you build them up into tanks and have money to spare. Never seen anyone take on these challenges with zero vitality. That's why your hp is so low. By this stage I usually have around 100 hp.

Crafting is totally worth it! Potent medicine early-mid game is where your late game funds come from, by my last game by the time i got where you started this episode, i started with 4k and ended with 5.2k. Faffing about with trinkets may be a pain sometimes too, but the bonuses can be amazing in the right places! man of faith/prayer/mortify flesh/high virtue has been amazing too

For the next run just, when you are at cambrai, and you have to get supplies from rhe villages, to the first one pay them and the second one talk sense ro them (you need high virtue for this over 60 i wpuld say) and eva will give you a powerful item Also nice vid :)

On the route you are on (if your rep with the leadership in the previous chapter is high enough, you can get offered a different story for this chapter), you will be able to recruit new party members only after you have progressed a bit in the story. If my memory is right, there is a man whose name starts with a 'D' (I think, he will be in the 3rd slot down) that you can talk to for more men. You will be able to find him in the social tab (the one with the blacksmith in it). You may need to talk to the people in that tab multiple times, it is always worth talking to them twice, just to check that they do not have additional dialogue.

You need to get to know the town guard leader to recruit more men in the mercenary path. Also the options to command them in combat and give them items are a part of the ''not a hero'' DLC To get to the recruit dude you need to scout for dupond then talk to olivia and she will send you to another guy.

what I think you should do is. Get a shield, train up a little bit more, but watch the time. Then solo the southern farm. Then you can talk to Olivia and then she will say you can talk to some some militia captain. The Militia captain will let you hire guys. You don't have much time, but try to hire full. Watch your time, but rerolling one or 2 times for better guys is worth it. Look for agility or weapons skill. The should have shields or spears for survivability(length gives them survivability). Try to get impoverished knights, take a few easy fights. Level up, search for gear to sell. full recovery of all fatigue is only 100 at the bathhouse. You get more than 100 from the loots. Once you are strong enough, Oliver's farm and the mercenary HQ should be attacked before the chapter ends.

You can rotate your mercenaries it shows up as a little recycle sign next to thier portrait when it's your turn

seems like ur playing an older version of the game since i can change the equipment of my squad and have options in fights to order my ppl around and use my pouch items on them or retreat them. and when u get merc u have to hire a full squad u can only reinforce them a bit later. i had the same problem only recruiting 2 ppl and closing the window. PS: u dont have to have the whip or the lute equipped to use it in camp/ town as u have might noticed.

Ok, I don’t think you will manage to save Renes with your current resources and time left (witch doesn’t mean end of run). To gain the most points for next character I sugest to power lvl weapon skill (and buy shield) and spend your money on brothel / bath house / fatigue reliefto make the most of your time left coz you will loose all money anyway. Just let the time go, survive, advance to next chapter and go as fat as possible. Sir. Garbo the II shall start from level of a sergant.

Hmmm, your game version seems to be outdated, the new version allows you to customize squad equipment and order their behavior in combat.

He got captured after battle of cambrai and was broke so he got EVERYTHING -3 due to inprisonment for few months

what version of heads will roll are you playing? why can't you command your guys, there should be a command Auto, I or II. To tell them to attack guy I or guy II or auto.
