Thank you for being so open about all your niggles and injuries, Lucy. As you say, sport can be cruel. As a mere mortal and an average runner I constantly struggle with niggles. Your openness makes me (and a whole lot of us) feel better and in fact inspired to accept it all, not just the good, and aspire to be a stronger athlete by putting in the necessary work.

As a huge LCB fan I was so disappointed that you could not compete and get your second World Champion win but as a athlete I understand the tough decision you had to make. Health first for sure. In my second Ironman in South Africa in 2010 I got sick during race week with stomach issues. The night before the race I went to the pharmacy and was told it's too late to rehydrate. I started the race anyway and on the last 60km on the bike I just wanted to sleep. I got off my bike and feel asleep on the grass and people going past kept asking if I was ok...I just said I needed a rest...I carried on and found a place to sleep, hiding away from the athletes on course..woke up a few minutes later and thought to myself, "what am I doing?!" Hidden away sleeping on an Ironman course. I just could not keep my eyes open and yet was at the fittest I had ever been. Decided that I had to pull out and that killed me...but just went back to training for the following year and finished in 2011. Had not done an Ironman since then and now training for Ironman South Africa 2025. Since seeing you win Kona last year you have been my main inspiration, so thank you for that and hope to see you at Ironman South Africa in 2025.😊

Well done for making the difficult but smart decision, Lucy. Hope you recover quickly and that you enjoy the process by focusing on the positives, as you always do.❤ Glad to see Reece the entertainer discovering yet more of his hidden talents.😜 Your family / team dynamic is so encouraging to watch, and really makes us (the audience) feel like we are a part of the journey...very special.🤗 I mistakingly sent you a private message on Instagram, instead of commenting on your post, so this next message was never seen, but here it is again... probably a tad late ,but still true and hopefully still meaningful. " You're an inspiration Lucy, and you always will be.🤗 The little voice that pops up in your head after having made a big decision like this is just trying to steal joy from you. It can't undo the amazing things that you've achieved in your life, or take away from your beautiful personality that inspires people every day. Questioning ourselves is part of life, but I know for a fact that those who truly support you, won't question you, because they have nothing but respect for you, and you have earned that. Thank you for being you, Lucy.❤️ You are incredible, and don't let that little voice tell you otherwise. I pray you heal up quickly. 🙏" " 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 "

The bit with Lucy and the (presumably) DNFd athlete hurt my heart. If you’re in the sport long enough, you’ve had a race cancelled due to injury, or you’ve experienced a massive setback just when things are going well, or a time when you haven’t been able to finish. It’s a deep, deep hurt…but the comeback is always so satisfying. Rest up, LCB! Your honestly and vulnerability are so appreciated. ❤

I know it is anecdotal but I had 15 years of achilles tendinitis and calf strain issues with the shoe brand I was using. I changed to Adidas Pro 3s and within the next few runs I was healed, and have been pain free since. I am convinced that shoes are central to the issue.

With my previous shoe brand I tried all their shoes and have a whole pile. I also spent money on physical therapy and the usual "fixes". Try the Pro 3s. If they dont work try all the others because shoes are the issue.

It must have really been painful. I pulled out of a marathon with a sore calf 10 miles in. It took a lot of massage and a change of shoe styles to fully recover. The shoes were the problem. I changed brands and it's never come back.

From the superficial info I am seeing it appears as though UR run training is "on-the-edge" with injuries to both calf's within the last year. Injury IS overtraining (OR UNDER-RECOVERY) at a particular time in the training cycle given a particular technique (there may be other factors as well). This has to be dealt with structurally often by modifying training or technique or recovery or all 3 in combination. One possible cure is to incorporate suspended running (LEVER or Lightspeed Lift) into REGULAR recovery days (even ALL run recovery training) in order to allow training stress to heal & ADAPTION to occur. Since UR NOT 18 anymore, this problem is likely to re-occur (with increasing age) unless dealt with. There was an 18yr old who did 90% of her training as suspended running (Lightspeed Lift) and won the under-20 World Championship in Cali in 2022. Just some thoughts from Las Vegas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqPRZZ-wZrpgqrs
