When comparing Physicians (MD/DO) vs. Dentists (DDS/DMD), I think lifestyle gets overlooked. On an hourly basis, the two careers can be very close in terms of income even when including specialists. The difference is that most dentists work 4 days a week and less than 40hrs/week while physicians are overworked substantially, especially in residency and early attending years.

Agreed, but the practical and useful knowledge learnt as a MD is incomparable and only possible if you attend medical school whereas other professions such as business and computer science can be self learnt if you have enough self discipline and ambition.

Once again, We Medical Laboratory Scientists find ourselves invisible to the medical community even during the time when respiratory lab testing rates is on the rise. 😂 So I guess I’ll speak up for my job/degree. Anytime you go to the doctor and they take blood from you, make you pee in a cup, or stick a swab in your nose...they send that sample to me to run a test on. I had to go get a bachelors degree in Medical Lab Sciences and take a national exam to be certified to work. In my hospital I get paid the same as a BSN with the same amount of education. I work in a bigger hospital in the city so all of my patients are in test tubes (blood, semen, urine, COVID and other respiratory swabs, etc). Pros: good pay, lots of opportunities, working in a hospital without talking face to face with people (if you’re an introvert), and the degree makes you pretty smart...there’s been several times where doctors have asked me for my opinion on a lab result. Cons: nobody will know who you are or what you do(as the video clearly demonstrates)...even during a pandemic when you’re running over 100 Covid tests a day just on your shift ...you’ll never get recognition for it. Another con is that management sucks but that might be everywhere.

Keep in mind that MLS(medical lab sciences) salary and education requirements vary by state and facility. In my state and hospital I had to go to school the same amount of time as the nurses I work with and make the same wage starting. This may be different for your location!

@Philemon Elaigwu That is an excellent question. First of all congrats to your sister! But an MLS degree can be pretty diverse as far as jobs go. Of course you can work at a hospital or clinic laboratory running patient testing which involves more general lab work, being quicker on your toes, and being more talkative with doctors and nurses. you can also specialize in a specific area of what we call a: “reference lab” these reference labs usually do a lot more complex testing in more “hardcore” fields of expertise (like in genetics or cancers for example). These labs require someone who is a lot more detailed oriented, willing to solve puzzles, and is okay with a more routine/ repetitive work shift. The pay is usually pretty excellent though. You may also find work for a government entity like the:CDC, state health department, military, and sometimes work with forensics in a crime lab. The first two get to play with a lot of insane diseases like TB and malaria which could be pretty cool! You can also find work In laboratory instrument companies for various different things..most common being instrument repair/service for hospitals and clinics with broken machines...actually very good pay! There’s the big blood donation companies like Red Cross that will be happy to take you! Traveling MLS seems to be a huge opportunity lately. This usually involves moving around to rural areas to help them out for a set amount of time and then moving onto the next place. These jobs seem to have the best benefits/pay. Might be fun if you like to travel and meet new people all the time. These are just a few options off the top of my head but I’m sure there’s many more! It all depends on what kind of personality and goal your sister has that’ll determine the best fit for her!

Physician here (psychiatrist specifically) and I've gotta say, the placement of MD/DO is pretty accurate. However, the long hours are going to depend on the field. Even in residency, I was averaging 45-55 hours per week on most rotations, and in the end I'll likely be working around 45-50 hours a week to make 270k/year. However, matching into your specialty of choice, getting into medical school at all, and the stress of the whole process will take years off your life. I have no regrets, but would recommend anyone that is considering it to do what I did and be ready to apply MD/DO or PA, and if you fall short on the MCAT or decide the path is too long for you, PA is always an option. Keep in mind you'll probably have to rack up at least 500-2000 hours of clinical experience for most schools to ssriously consider you for PA, so getting a certification as a EMT-B or similar is recommended early on so you can clock hours on weekends, evenings, or summers.

I'm a nursing major and seeing people hype nurses up makes me really happy. I already know it's a very good line of work, but hearing someone else say it is even better. A boy in one of my classes said "Nurses are just people who weren't smart enough or didn't want to do the work to become an M.D." I wanted to punch him so hard. I've also heard of M.D.s and surgeons being condescending towards nurses because they think that they're "smarter" than the nurses. Doesn't make sense, but I'm excited to get my BSN.

The degrees discussed here are clinical where a professional interacts with individual patients. What about the non-clinical health degrees where one interacts with populations, institutions and systems? Most people are not cut out for or have an interest in clinical careers.

Health is basically a clinical industry. I guess you could argue for degrees like public health, epidemiology, or maybe environmental health, but out of all of these, epidemiology would be the only one that doesn’t really have a counterpart in other industries, like how someone getting a job in public health will probably just be some admin worker, so other than maybe epidemiology, you don’t really need to think about and rate these degrees.

Someone specifically searching for a conventional health career would be looking for the professional degrees listed in the video, while the health degrees you listed, while technically being a part of health, would be better suited for a finance/statistics/administration video. As the degrees one goes for are to facilitate their future career, and these degrees you listed have much more common in nature to things like general finance, economics or statistics, and could just be seen as doing these things within the industry of health, rather than being a professional health career.

@@chacmool2581 sure they are part of the industry, but as degrees they are much more statistics or finance than they are health, and from the perspective of making the video for people trying to find the career they want to go into, omitting these degrees from the list is reasonable, as before caring about what financial industry they are working in, they care about the content of the work, and so they go into the video finding degrees that will lead them into a desired clinical health career, not something that is technically in the health field but in all practicality of the work is just statistics or finance.

Hi Shane! I hope one day you will also cover Medical Lab scientists! We are the ones who run patient lab tests (ESPECIALLY FOR COVID-19) and notify their doctor/nurse about any critical results we may discover. 70-75% of a patient’s diagnosis is based off of our findings! In order to work as a scientist in the hospital lab, you will have to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and take the national board of certification exam (some states, such as California and New York, require you to take the their license exam too). I work in an outpatient lab in both the Microbiology and Molecular Biology departments. Microbiology: I analyze 300-400 urine cultures a day to see if the patients are growing any pathological bacteria (like salmonella or Strep B) or yeast in their urine that may be the causing their urinary tract infection (UTI) if they are experiencing any symptoms. If there is one or more bacteria present, I run a few tests to see which antibiotics the bacteria is either resistant or susceptible to. Then, I send the report of results to their doctors who will then write a prescription of an antibiotic that is sent to the pharmacy. In larger micro labs, there are other samples analyzed in micro like 💩, blood, sputum, wound cultures, tissue, and fungus. Fun fact: a bacteria that I’ve seen a few times, Pseudomonas aerogenes, smells exactly like corn chips. While to some, smells like artificial 🍇. Lol Molecular biology: I run polymerase chain reaction tests on 200-300 nasal swabs for COVID-19 and vaginal swabs for bacterial vaginosis, yeast, and Trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia a day. In polymerase chain reactions, the analyzer will detect any genetic material of a specific organism. In the case of COVID-19, the analyzer will detect if the patient was infected at the time testing or if the patient was infected before. If there is a significant viral load, we will then run another test to detect which variant the patient may be infected with. We then will send the report of the COVID-19 positive result and the variant type is sent to the doctor. There are other departments such as: 1. Hematology - they analyze the patient’s blood samples (some even analyze urine) and let the doctor know if they find any abnormal cells in blood or abnormalities in urine. 2. Chemistry - they detect patient’s potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc. levels. Some labs also run flu tests and notify the nurse or doctor which flu strain the patient has. 3. Blood bank - they determine which blood, platelet, and/or plasma type the patient is and send which ever is needed when the doctor or nurse requests for it. You can also work in other specialized departments (toxicology, parasitology, etc.). But some require you to get another certification, such as cytotechnology (Shane mentioned this field in one of his past videos) where this scientist detects if the patient has cancer and/or other abnormalities. There is a significant shortage right now in this field due to majority of scientists being close to retiring age and also that no one really knows about this career. The starting salary is now similar to a nurse’s. It’s also great if you are an introvert or just don’t want to have direct contact with patients and rarely with doctors. Hope my looong message has helped anyone who is interested and/or pursuing this field! Have a good one!

@@leej1759 thanks for your feed back! For patient care, it depends. If you work in a extremely small hospital/ clinic, you will see patients via phlebotomy and collecting other samples. In bigger hospitals/ clinics, you won’t. You will only have contact with the doctors and nurses in regards to lab results, add on orders, etc. :)

Shane- do a video about Dental Hygienist. In my state, a dental hygienist is a 2 year degree. HOWEVER my state offers a Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene. Basically, your a RN with a BA degree but can only work in dentistry. Do a video comparing AA degrees vs the 4 year applied science version.

I am currently in Dental Hygiene for AA. It depends on what you want to do after becoming a DH. For example, if you want stay as a clinician, an AA will get you as far as someone who has BA. If you want to go in to public health or research then you would want to get a BA.

I have to agree with you on D tier for Nutritionist. I made a video on if it was worth it to be a dietitian awhile ago and I gotta say the profession has dropped with the masters degree requirement. Overall its a pretty chill job; you never have to clean pee, poop, or blood, and its mostly just teaching patients basic nutrition concepts. Would have been C tier for me if they didn't start requiring a masters.

I know this is 2 yrs old but in some states optometrist can perform some minor surgeries and can even do PRK (form of lasik), so if you are interested in the field and want to be able to do the full scope I’d recommend look for the states that allow you to do that.

OK back. Optometrists obtain a doctoral degree and take 8-9 years to complete with residency. We are trained to detect and treat ocular diseases (like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes), perform vision therapy, triage systemic disease that affect the eyes (chronic conditions), pediatrics, specialty contact lenses to fit abnormal corneas, or regular contacts for the average person, dry eye therapy, manage patients with TBI/ABI/head trauma, treat strabismus and amblyopia, and prescribe oral and topical medications. We just don't perform surgery. Some states, however, optometrists can perform lasik and other minor surgical procedures based on the laws. High pay, low stress, lowest sue rate. Do you're research please this is definitely an A tier.

So many positions fall under this umbrella, such as coders, release of information specialists, billers, health information technicians, health information managers, privacy officers, the list goes on.

Earlier this year I was accepted into a physical therapist assistant program but decided not to pursue it. Many of the job prospects are found in nursing facilities or home health, where you are working with the elderly and very disabled people. Outpatient PTA, which was what I was primarily interested in, pays the lowest and is being phased out. Many places are requiring you to be a full blown PT with a doctorate, with pay under 100k. Something else that I discovered was that many positions for outpatient PTA were being replaced by PT techs, which requires no degree outside of a bit of on the job training. The reasons many companies were replacing PTAs with PT techs was because they can have them do the same job but pay them basically minimum wage. Outpatient physical therapy really isn't all that difficult once you get diagnosed by a PT, you'd basically just be a personal trainer. If you have a passion for this field consider becoming a PT, though given the time and money that would be required to earn your doctorate I'd consider looking elsewhere if that is a factor you'd consider for a major career decision.

@@cholkymilkmirage4984 When I was going through my required shadowing hours to get my application in for the PTA program I really wasn't all that thrilled about it, and this was well before getting accepted. You needed half of your hours in an inpatient setting and literally all they did was have these patients use a walker and bring them to the "gym" where they had them do toe taps, etc. Granted, this is what stage they were at but when I saw that I immediately felt it wasn't for me at all. The outpatient setting was more what I imagined but what I noticed was they had 2 PTs that diagnosed/evaluated, about 4 pt techs and 1 PTA that essentially did the same job they did. When I read up on how the career field was phasing PTAs out in outpatient it all made sense.

Everytime I look at places hiring for PTs online some of them say they are offering 100k or over but obviously for experienced PTs and all in home health. Im a junior rn at ASU and i have been having some second thoughts about this field. I really only went into it because of selfish desires thinking it had alot of monye in it, and I learn how to keep my body biomechanically healthy. You think I should still pursue it or look for other areas of work?

@@cholkymilkmirage4984 If you have a passion for this field and really want to pursue it as a career I'd definitely go the PT route, as the PTA field is slowly fading away into oblivion. However, if money/income is a major factor in your decision I'd really sit down and think about this. Since you are a junior you are pretty close to getting your bachelor's degree. You are looking at another 3 years of schooling and it is very intense, after all it is a doctorate degree, and I do know that the costs will be quite expensive. For me personally, I only have an associate's degree and the courses I'd need to not only get a bachelor's but complete all of necessary courses to apply would take me a couple years. I'm in my early 30s and don't want to spend the next 5 years in school for a job that honestly doesn't really pay all that well, especially given the amount of post college required and that I personally have no passion for the field. Honestly, there are so many other careers in the healthcare field that you can possibly pursue that pay quite well that do not require anywhere near that much schooling. Nursing is obviously a popular choice, there are tons of schools/programs available to us, we are both in AZ. They are also in high demand, so there are tons of jobs available almost anywhere and not only that but they pay well.

If you have got the smarts and the resources to become a doctor, you almost certainly got what it takes to follow some other far more lucrative, less stressful career. Becoming a doctor you will be making sacrifices and you will have to decide of these sacrifices are worth it. Dietetic intern here. Something you didn't mention about the dietetic profession that is REALLY important that you left out is that not only does the Registered Dietitian require a B.S. AND a 12,000hr Accredited & unpaid internship AND pass the Dietetic exam. FURTHERMORE, starting in 2024 the RD will REQUIRE A MASTERS DEGREE. It's disheartening to know that 6 years, a B.S. a M.S., and an 10 month Internship, would only offer jobs at an average of $52K... At least in Fl. Lots of RD's are hoping the profession will shift to paying more. But it's hard to sit here and spend 7-8 years of school and internship and volunteering to only get paid 52k when other people are getting 6-month certifications and making the same... smh

@@bang.marcel0 Yes. But figure out why you'd want to. MS. in dietetics is geared towards meeting people's nutritional needs. If you're interested in food science and management, I would suggest finding a food science program instead of dietetics.

I would rank Physical Therapist lower than a Occupational therapist. Only due yo the fact that their salaries are comparable but PTs are all moving towards a doctoral level which will add several years compared to a masters in occupational therapy. There are programs that allow someone to graduate with an associates in occupational therapy assisting and work while doing a bridge program for a masters in occupational therapy. It’s hard to beat that.

when you go to the dr for your broken arm from snowboarding, *someone* has to bill your insurance company.

Nurse anesthetist make 200k straight out of their DNP program. (CRNA). They also can get 8 weeks vacation and work 4 days and 40 hour weeks. So the pay to lifestyle is great and it’s only 7 years of schooling after high school. You could be 25 and debt free by 28 making by then 250-300k a year. Not to mention you could pick up shifts and make DOUBLE if you wanted to work more hours. All I’ll say is that the field is lucrative and Anesthesiologists are worried Nurse anesthetist will take many (not all) of there jobs for lower pay. And 200-350k isn’t low pay whatsoever. Regardless that’s a path to consider and it’s much less schooling than medical doctor and it’s also easier. Better work life balance. You can also make bank while in your 20s. It’s honestly a remarkable field. Nurse practitioners, Nurse anesthetist and physician assistants have great jobs for those who like having a meaningful job, making 150k plus and great hours + benefits.

Yeah, you’ll get all of the PA pre-reqs with a biochem degree. However, on top of your classes, most people getting into PA school nowadays have thousands of hours of hospital volunteer hours

So my Dad was a Speech Language Pathologist. And there are two levels, one is a Bachelor degree level and the other is a Masters degree level. Most SLP's don't actually do speech services, its those with a Bachelor degree who do most of the work.
