Health Matters | Causes of strokes in young people and how to prevent an attack: Dr. Robyn Holgate

According to a report released by the South African Medical Association Journal, a stroke is the second leading cause of death after HIV/AIDS.
Also, over 120 out of 100 000 people aged 35 years and younger die from strokes annually. However, a stroke is preventable. This may be achieved through the adoption of healthy behaviours and the management of stress. This morning in our Health Matters segment, we take a closer look at the hidden risks that may cause young people to have strokes.

It would be interesting to get stats of strokes caused by mostly corporate stress specifically in SA amongst young people because there is a lot going on there no one talks about.

I recently spoke to a Professor at Medical school, one of the biggest risk factors is high blood pressure. 40% of people over 18years old in SA have high BP according to his studies. The problem is most only diagnose the High BP in late 30s or 40s. Which means for 20 years the high BP is damaging your vascular system and heart, then one day these problems happen. But they were actually happening for many years.
