I think the term you meant to use is "hydrate" rather than "ferment". Chia does not ferment but it is highly absorbent and absorbs 10 times its weight in fluid. Rather than the way shown here I would recommend soaking the chia in whatever fluid you intend for at least an hour. And a 2 to 1 ratio is not enough, you probably need a 5 to 1 ratio with fluid at least. If it is not completely hydrated it could be constipating - because it will soak up the fluid in your stomach instead. The method shown here would leave the seeds only partially hydrated when consumed. But yes, as described heating the water speeds up the hydration process. For a beginner two tablespoons can be a *lot* to start out with, I would suggest 1 or two teaspoons and slowly work your way up to a higher amount. If you are soaking chia way ahead of time it is a good idea to refrigerate or the chia will start sprouting in a few days. Nothing wrong with that but sprouts may not be what you want in a drink, it will be more of a salad thing. And what someone said earlier is incorrect - hydrating it in the fridge overnight does not decrease its weight-loss effect. Its weight loss effect is caused by the fact that it is a low-glycemic food which will help regulate insulin and normalize your sugar metabolism. But it is important to understand that simply drinking chia and eating cheesecake after won't lead to weight loss. It is not magic, it decreases your cravings by stabilizing sugar in your blood. But it won't stop you from overeating if you are determined enough. IJS.

i have a question, since you seem like you're more advanced than me with your Chia knowledge... im a beginner with the Chia seeds & just started 2 days ago. I actually just added them in my room-temperature water and added lemon and just drank it right after i dumped them in. I noticed i have been having stomach/diarrhea issues latley... Does that have anything to do with the way im using the Chia seeds, because i haven't been letting it soak or putting it in the refrigerator...??? i just throw it in my water and drink it... Have i been doing it wrong?! Plz help me!!! 😖
@SlickClicks7 жыл бұрын
Without knowing all the details I have to guess a little but my initial thoughts are: The way you describe is clearly the wrong way to consume chia as I tried describing above. Just adding water and chia and drinking is not much different than just swallowing chia and drinking water after. Chia takes a very long time to fully saturate by absorbing water. In a minute it will absorb almost nothing. If you consume it unhydrated it will hydrate in your stomach with your gastric juices. And as a result your digestive tract will dry out and nothing will move in your digestive system until your body can secrete enough fluid to fully hydrate it again. It is (almost) like swallowing some dry cement. As an experiment take a teaspoon of chia, add a teaspoon or two of water to it, mix it well and let it sit for a while and look at it. It will become like cement. You don't really want that happening inside your stomach. Chia should be fully saturated when you consume it to reduce the odds of constipation. Soak it for a minimum of half an hour but preferraby longer. You can experiment with ratios but one tablespoon to a glass of water is about right. But you may like it a bit thinner or thicker. The key is it should at least be thin enough to flow like honey. Preferrably thinner. In addition, if you are not accustomed to a soluble high fiber dietary fiber like chia your body could take some time to get accustomed to it. So maybe start with a teaspoon a day and wait a week or two till your body is accustomed to it (no stomach heaviness/discomfort) and increase by a teaspoon at time. You may have to increase your consumption of water a bit when you start taking chia. Just experiment as

+Melvin Menezes Thank you SO much for your reply and suggestion! Now i know a little more about it than i did an hr ago! Can i soak the chia seeds in a container in a room-temperature area overnight?
@Landrew09 жыл бұрын
I do it a simpler way. I put 12 teaspoons of seeds in a quart of water, shake or stir it every 5 minutes about 3 times, then let it sit in the fridge. Whenever I want to make a chia drink, I pour it in a glass and add flavoring.

Chia will grow in pretty much any liquid but I like to pre-soak in water so its straight water that the chia seeds are soaking up. I find they also become more jelly and last longer if you want to make a large batch.
@HealthNutNutrition11 жыл бұрын
Yes! Just add them straight to water and allow them to become jelly like before consuming to get the full body cleansing they provide. Great to have before working out or a run because chia helps store water in your body and keep you hydrated longer! hope that helps:)

Since chia contains a lot of fibre you want to gradually increase your daily consumption of chia as it can be a shock to your system. I would say max 1 tbsp. a day is enough to get the full benefits. If you want to spread it out then add 1/2 a tbsp. in your morning smoothie and the other half in your salad dressing for lunch!

As an alcoholic, I personally would appreciate it if you got your terminology right. Fermenting is a process that brings out the sugar alcohols in a substance. This is not the case with Chia seeds, they merely absorb the liquid, not ferment them. I would not be able to drink them if they did. And as soon as I heard that, I pretty much had to say no since I cannot have alcohol. And to the person who said it's not that serious (of a mistake), its a huge one. Fermenting creates alchohol. Soaking creates gelled chia seeds. One an alcoholic cannot have, the other they can.

I'm a fan of the white chia seeds, coz they kinda disappear into my quinoa & steelcut oats (a version of which I've hacked to make in the microwave, heh), so I forget about em. I've also been blooming my chia in a quart jar with a heaping 1/2c (8T) of chia seeds and then juice filled up the rest of the way. Then it's all in one, bloomed seeds, easy to shake, and container from which to drink. I dig it. I gotta say, though, I do think the black or black/white mixture of seeds look nicer in these drinks...but to switch back to black as a matter of aesthetics seems a little silly, even for me, haha.

+Rohit D Actually, I've had varying results with that. It seems some juices aren't absorbed readily by the seeds. The water always works. Once you get them started in the process, you can add juice and experiment with different fluids with different acidities and viscosities. Her mixture seems very thick, which means the seeds will continue to absorb fluids in the gut, so it would be a good idea to drink plenty of water.

Nice method, but can be simplified a bit more by soaking the seeds directly in the bottle but that is individual preference. And about ferment she actually means hydrate, so just read it as hydrate, don’t think we can ferment anything in 1hour. lot of fuss is made out of this term, they are completely different and the outcome is also very different. I liked the video.

Can you just put the chia seeds directly into the drink and let it sit overnight with the juice? Rather than gel-ing it water and adding it in after it becomes gelatinous
@patrishavenegas7189 жыл бұрын
I think you shouldn't ferment over night if you're interested in losing weight. by the time it gets to your stomach it gets broken down and won't feel full. I've used it in every possible way but either way they're full of vitamins and maybe the first day or two you'll have to use the restroom but its cleansing you which we all need. I just love these seeds. :)

Oh wow you wouldn't think it was possible, but apparently you can mess this up. My Chiaseeds don't break when I shake the mix and they just float to the top within seconds. I didn't have any organoc juice or fresh fruit so just used whatever I had, which is a pack of mostly fruit extract, sugar and added flavours. Is this the seeds way of telling me their not gonna mingle with that stuff and neither should I, or is it just a matter of ratio? It really just looks like juice with a layer of the gelatinous seeds on top. edit: I gave it a go anyway but the gelatine hasn't mixed with the juice at all, so it's very uncomfortable to drink (bunch of slimy little balls). I hope it's not supposed to feel that way in a proper batch?
