The great majority of the food at Dollar Tree is highly processed. Frozen fruits and vegetables are the exceptions. Regular consumption of ultra processed foods contributes to metabolic inflammation. Lots of high carb foods on their shelves. And because of the small packaging strategy used at dollar stores, the price per serving is incredibly expensive if one looks beyond the low unit pricing. The consumers who understand neither of these truths are victimized twice: in their wallet and in their health.

This is a post about getting food when you can barely afford anything to eat. Don't shame people for eating whatever they can get when they have such limited options. And processing doesn't automatically mean it's bad for you. Which is partly why she chose the options that she did. Read the room.
@murrayburke7746

@@HannahIrene719 My reply speaks about how retailers like Dollar Tree mislead consumers by offering fake value and ULTRA processed foods that are harmful. I care more about the consumers being victimized than Dollar Tree does. I mentioned nothing that disparages the shoppers. How you can so badly misconstrue what is clearly written suggests that you didn’t read my post but rather injected some personal agenda that has no bearing on what I posted. Your sense of caring doesn’t relieve you of the responsibility to read what is actually written without interjecting your own imagined slights.

I agree with people saying that this is all most likely cheaper at a supermarket, so I think this short is more useful for food deserts. This is when the nearest supermarket is 1+ hours away and the only stores available nearby are pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens), Convenience Stores (711, Race Trac), and Dollar Stores (Deals AKA Dollar Tree, Family Tree). There's a reason why they're overpriced, they pray on people who don't have the resources nor ability to go elsewhere

'Unpackaged' food, in some cases (fruit and vegetables especially) is more expensive than the 'packaged' stuff because of short shelf life and government policy in the US. So many people end up buying stuff that's super unhealthy because it's what they can afford/ places like this are all that's around. It's good to see a video pointing out that you can still make relatively healthy choices if you have to shop in these places, even if it still isn't ideal when compared to 'fresh' options. My dollar tree doesn’t have none of that stuff , also we need to use a cover or a piece of paper to line the basket’s bottom … they are disgusting

I don't get frozen fruits and vegetables from Dollar Tree because they come from China. You can usually buy canned beans and tuna for cheaper at Target. Otherwise, really good ideas!

They're also icey and freezer burnt. That's because the frozen stuff sits out for too long before the employees manage to pack it away.

Note: freeze dried fruit is deceiving. The process removes the fiber, the part that makes fruit filling and leaves behind basically sugar. While tasty, there's definitely better snack choices if you're on a healthy cut 💓
@luthen4464
@luthen4464 Жыл бұрын
That is not true. Freeze drying literally just removes the water. The fruit is frozen to turn the water into a solid and then the drying process turns the solid water into water vapor (gas) that then evaporates leaving what is essentially carbs and fiber behind. I have 0 idea where you heard that it removes fiber. The only way to remove fiber from fruit is to juice it.

I think many commenters make valid points but are missing a major issue: many people live in food deserts. Learning to shop at a dollar store can help alleviate the lack of access so many people have to nutritious foods. Yes, the mark up on some items is higher than that of a grocery store, but if this is your only option, it’s essential to know what to buy.

Toast some rye bread or sourdough till crispy. Slather on some mashed avocado and thin slices tomatoes. Lay tin sardines on top. Add fine chopped parsley, squeeze lemon and thin slices of red onion. Salt and pepper. It's pretty amazing and quick.

You’re better off making your own mix. Just use alternative ingredients for it. Don’t even bother adding protein powder. Just drink that alone.

If you are trying to save money ditch the pancake mix completely. It is a complete waste of money. It takes a minute tops to mix up pancakes from scratch and is infinitely cheaper. It makes no sense from either a money or even a laziness perspective to buy that pre-packaged mix. Buying staples and keeping it simple is way more practical if you are feeling poor than a bunch processed boxes.

It might be cheaper in the long haul, but requires more cash up front. When I’m on a tight budget, items like this help add some variety to my meals with out having to buy a ton of ingredient. Small packets of seasoning blends, for example, are more per serving than buying whole containers of each spice, but the upfront cost is lower. I’m not in a place where I can spend 1/4 of my grocery budget on spices. Instead, I’ll get the cheap packet and work on building up my staples gradually over time. Convenience items help a lot of people get food on the table - no reason to shame them for being “lazy.”
@LulaMae21
@LulaMae21 Жыл бұрын
@@carolinespurr1541 Right-- people using convenience foods are not lazy. They're just busy or don't have a lot of energy to expend cooking. If it comes down to eating convenience foods or not eating at all, eating is always the better option. Plus, the last time I made pancakes from scratch, it took waaaay longer than a minute to mix up lol.
@missyperry9510

@ Stiobhard I agree, you also get a much more pure clean meal that tastes much better. Premixed processed boxes of pancakes, muffins, etc. add a lot of unnecessary fillers that alter the flavor of the finished product. Cooking from scratch is tastier and healthier.
@stiobhardgruamach1368
@stiobhardgruamach1368 Жыл бұрын
@@carolinespurr1541 I use the word lazy because this is how people generally justify it. But the fact is it takes more work and time oftentimes to use those commercial mixes than if you just kept it simple. The ingredients for pancakes don't take a lot spices. Most ordinary kitchens already have basics like flour, water, sugar, salt, baking powder and oil. You can add anything else you like but as a baseline that is all you needed and it takes no more than a minute to mix in a bowl and pour.... and is a lot easier on your pocketbook.
