I have a different take on it. What sort of friend tells on his bro like that? Look, I get that David was greedy, and he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and yeah, I'd be resentful too. But what sort of friend literally tells the woman his buddy is sleeping with "yeah, you know what he said about you? That you're his fuck buddy."? It was in poor taste to say that, and he did take her for granted, but he told him that shit in confidence. You don't do that if you're supposedly someone's best friend. That's manipulative and sneaky. And it's passive aggressive. Brad comes off as very jealous and gutless. Instead of having the balls to say "dude, I'm pissed off at you. You won't even let me have her. And I don't think you're treating her well". I never really thought of this character as any sort of friend to David. He comes off more like someone who sponges off his success. Instead of just confronting him, and telling him the honest to God truth about the type of person he is, he deliberately sabotage him. Look, if you're a real friend to someone, you'll tell it like it is, instead of going behind his back. It's like setting off a crime a passion. It's like telling a man his wife is cheating on him, and he goes home to find them sleeping together, and then he commits a murder suicide. Not that it excuses said behavior, but you essentially set off a chain of events that got two or three people killed. That mofo Brian is as guilty as he is. It causes this chick to lose her shit, kill herself and almost kills David in the process. The worst part is he denies any involvement in it at all, washes his hands of it, and insults the shit out of him in literally his lowest point in life. It's like kicking a man in the shin after you shoot his leg. And the worst part of it is, he sets up his funeral after driving him to suicide, acting like he really cares. Brian had some tough breaks in his life, but he handles them in the most petty mannerism possible. He comes off just as childish and shallow as David does. The dude gets to live his life, while David spends what's left of it in agonizing pain. Look, you can handle your lot in life in one of two ways. You can do it with grace, or you can it in a very petty and small fashion. Brad is just as greedy as he was, he just didn't have the same resources. He's as possessive and shallow, he just lacks the means to fulfill those desires. I'm sorry, but I see it a totally different way. That's no friend. I wouldn't want some jealous prick waiting for the opportunity to stab me in the back. As for Sophia, she comes off as ingenuine. Why did she even come to David's funeral? She very clearly decided she wanted nothing to do with him, and then she acts like she misses him? It seems to me that she misses a pretty face and charisma. Granted, David didn't have a whole lot of character, but her grief seems to be over superficial features, and not an actual person. That's how I see it at least. These weren't friends. Honestly though, out of all of them I pity Juliana the most. That woman was driven insane by selfish behaviors. As shallow as she was, she was still a human being.

They just did such a great job at capturing those complicated dynamics that come into play between people when things like jealousy and love are strongly at play.

I dunno if you mending this cuz I can only TLDR your dissertation, but homie didn't even say she was a Fuck Buddy. The friend who ratted, was the one who said that cuz crazy white chic was his dream girl. All his words, but the guy who paid for em. That shit will get someone killed. But...

I think this film is a signal. With a strong theme that you have no friends in this realm. David is betrayed by his friend and employee. David never said Fbuddy . It’s a damn shame that our friends and family can orchestrate our demise .

It definitely had an overarching air of isolation throughout the entire story, beginning with David being totally alone in a city, known for being ridiculously packed with people around the clock.

There are many cuts/deleted scenes of this movie but only two endings after David jumps. one with David opening his eye to the voice of Sofia saying "open you're eyes" and another one which is of David opening his eye to the voice of a unknown woman saying "David open you're eyes" most likely a scientist waking David up from his from his cryostasis. both endings lead the viewer to believe two completely different endings one where the dream starts again from the start for David to build up his relation ship with Sofia and the other where he wakes up to the future long after his friends and... Sofia his love. she never knew how important she was to David.

One of my favourite films. Rewatched it last night again. My theory of what the film was about seems to change. One thing I noticed was the vanilla sky painting. In reality, it was his mother’s painting that was painted by Monet. After his parents died, it was handed to him, much like his father’s company that he made from the ground up. When he wakes up on the street ( where the splice happens, if that’s the theory you go by), this is now a world and life David is creating for himself, his vanilla sky. At first, I used to think the splice theory was it, but after rewatching it I like to believe it’s the coma theory. To be honest, it’s a theory I want to believe to give David’s character the reawakening arch his life needed before the accident. To me, David spending all that money to be frozen until he wakes up in the future makes him the most vain, unlikable character, and very selfish. He was rotten to the people that loved him after the crash, then decides to use a cheat code to when things can get better for him. I like to believe he was in a coma, a result of his own doing. His consequences. That night with Sofia saved his life, or was going to. She was everything to him, yet they were so different. Seeing her humble life, her flat etc… the photos on the fridge (a life he hasn’t captured on film, as he had no life of his own. He was coasting by). He makes the decision that morning as he leaves, he is going to take charge. She was his anchor that grounded him. As he walks to his car, Juliana (the angel of death), tempts him into her car. A choice he made so many times in his life before Sofia. The temptation, the final test, the apple Adam chose to eat. This was his last chance, and so his life is taken away from him by the consequences he had managed to escape, until now. Through his coma, he learns acceptance for how he was to other people. He takes responsibility for his actions. He wakes up in his mind, and then he decides it is time to wake in physically. Sofia guiding him, and LE (the tv spot they both watched and connected with), being a tool used to get him to that elevator to chose life. Amazing film.

Here's the gnostic theory: David is God in the flesh. He has come down to Earth to have the human experience. To make it real, he had to wipe his memory of his true self. The Devil, (LE, tech support) tricked and trapped him in a false reality, to get him to kill himself, thus committing a mortal sin and dooming himself to Hell.

@@TTFTShow Jesus was the 42nd generation after David. If Jesus was God in the flesh, he walked the earth to know how men lived, after Satan chastised him for not understanding the human experience. David Aames is a reference to King David. David's father is God. The Last Temptation of Christ tells the same story. Satan tricked Jesus into living a mortal life, getting married, having children. Jesus got old and saw his world fall to ruin and begged God to let him get back up on the cross. Then it was revealed as an illusion. He woke up on the cross. Vanilla Sky ends as David wakes up. But it's not really David, it's Brian. "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy." This marks David as a false Messiah, which links in to Tom's Scientology status, with LRH as God and Tom as the inheritor of the kingdom. It's a deep movie with multiple interpretations, and no single one needs to be the exclusive truth.

There is no splice. The movie opens with Sofia's voice BEFORE David even supposedly met her for the first time.
@robotpanda77
@robotpanda77 Жыл бұрын
The problem though is that it isnt Sofia that says open your eyes at the end. It is someone else. The splice cannot occur after the club because David has scenes in jail prior to that moment. I think it is also important that David is almost hit by a truck in the beginning. This adds credence that the car crash with julie was real but everything in the film is his interpretation of it. This explains a lot like the unrealistic connection he has with sofia, his best friend and at work. The board is referred to using a fairytale nickname. Perhaps he was none of these things and asked for a lucid dream where he looked like tom cruise, was a rich playboy and beloved by women and had good friends. Then it all went awry. A lot of viewers really dont get it, they dislike David for being a rich dickhead and hate dialogue like the julie car scene without realizing that none of it is real. It is all in Davids head, it is all a dream.
