Winning the Cold War is about the easiest plaudit you can give him, but that also had something to do with the Soviets collapse. LBJ created effective public policy, but you could hardly call him popular, especially during the Vietnam war. Clinton and both Bushs were popular among enough among their party, but hardly created an lasting domestic policies/programs, and certainly did things to anger the other political faction (Monica Lewinsky and both wars in Iraq- although Bush 41 had international support for his). @nickkperezy you've given your own answer to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", namely that it is, in fact broke(n), very much so. My problem with independent, and this is just from interviews i've seen and people talking on the net, they're republicans but don't want the bad press of being called republicans. They all say, I voted republican though I've been independent all my life or I was a republican but now am a independent. And when asked who they voted for it was a republican. Am not sure at the % for this, it's just what I've seen.
