Looks like you enjoyed that as much as i did in 1977...it was a "day on the green' summer concert series....there were several groups that played each one since it was an all day show...lil trivia the groundskeepers used to complain about the mini pot plants they had to pull up not long after each one...lol

We actually got a two foot bong in a Day On the Green concert the next summer. Basically everyone crashed the gates when they opened to get down front. Best summer days ever.

This was in July 1977, In October they were in Greenville SC, I was at their concert. They left the next evening and was in a plane crash. I watched them play free bird , It was the last song they played that night.

You may be right, however people are still listening to Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. They are way older than 50 years ago. Maybe this current generation will come up with a way to have future generations enjoy this music. Oddly enough this is what MY kids grew up with because it’s what my husband I both played at home, along with classical, jazz and even a little country.

This was my high school graduation year! Freebird was sort of an anthem for my generation. The plane crash that took so many of their members shook us to the core. All day stadium shows like this were fairly common-I saw Boston and a number of other amazing musicians at one.

I'm 66, and I grew up in NY. My favorite band was the Allman Brothers..Back then you didn't have the kind of division we have today. ESPECIALLY when it came to music..Every race, creed and color was represented in one fashion, or another..And we loved it all..At least I sure as hell did..There was an avalanche of amazing music coming out daily..Not weekly, or monthly, but daily!..You could hardly keep up..This kind of thing was on the menu all the time.

Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "I Know A Little", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "That Smell", "Gimme Three Steps", "Tuesday's Gone" etc.

Billy Powell on piano was a roadie for the band .when VanZant heard him playing free bird on a break signed him up . They did not know he was a trained classical pianist.

I was 15 and living in the Napa Valley in '77. My older brother had two tickets and wanted to take me to this show.. Peter Frampton also performed that day right off of the Frampton Comes Alive album. This was a Day On the Green multiband Bill Graham event. That's who is talking at the end of this clip My parents felt I was too young to go and basically had to ground me because I threw such a fit. Sad because it was 3 months before the plane crash and was the last time anybody in that crowd got to see the original band. I'm 62 and still bitch at my 80 year old mom about making me miss that show. 😂 I got to go to other great Day On the Greens there in subsequent years. It was always hot as hell. We always took the BART in so no one had to drive into Oakland. Thanks for entertaining this 40 yr veteran RN. I enjoy your reactions. Keep 'em coming.

In a few months after this show we would lose Ronnie, Steve Gaines ( red pants), Steve's sister Cassie (backup singer), road manager and 2 pilots in the plane crash. 20 Others survived.

Love Bill Graham at the end. You're right it is a big difference between San Francisco bands and Jacksonville bands. The diversity that Bill brought to his shows was amazing. The Grateful Dead with Curtis Mayfield for one.

I was there. It was one of Bill Graham's concerts in the "Day on the Green" summer concerts. Usually, 5-6 bands and no one was allowed on the green grass infield. Sun, no cameras, cell phones or sunscreen! ;) We didn't have those things back then, but we had the music that made the memories for our heads, not videos.

I was at the same concert series of a Day in the Green at the JFK stadium in Philly, June '77, I was 17. It was general admission and a ticket was $8.50. The lineup was J Geils, Skynyrd with Peter Frampton as the headliner. When Skynyrd left the stage, 75% of the 120k+ crowd left... they were there to see these guys. It was the last gig in Philly before the crash in October that year. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to experience them live. Unlike so many 'bands', these guys didn't need a studio. They played it live like the recorded version. Btw, recently Gary Rossington passed away. He was the last surviving member of the band. RIP to all... and so true the song "if there's a rock n roll heaven, you know they got a hell of a band..."

SIMPLE MAN; the lyrics are special and of course it's Skynyrd so there's great guitar work with a solo. Sadly Artimus Pyle, the drummer is the last surviving member of this line up. We lost Gary Rossington (slide guitar) months ago. Gary was the last of the original members. The GUITAR ARMY is back together in the here after and this solo is still going on somewhere.

O.K. here goes, the guitar player in white is Allen Collins, the guitar player kind of in the background is Stevie Gaines, the guitar player who was always to the left of Ronny Van Zant is Gary Rossington. Billy Powell is the piano player, on bass is Leon Wilkenson and Artimus Pyle was the drummer. Then there is the Honkettes the ladies of the back up singers. Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins. What is eerie is that just a couple months after this concert on October 20th on a chartered flight the plane went down and Ronny Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines were killed in the crash. Most everyone involved in the crash had moderate to major injuries. Several never really got over the crash and the loss of Ronny.

Now you are aging me Nick...I grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd... had the great honor to see them open up for The Who at the former, (no longer there) Omni in Atlanta, Ga YEARS ago...then again at 3 consecutive shows later at The Fox Theater (also in Atlanta, Ga), a few years later when they recorded their live album, "One More From The Road", they were the band of my youth...I know every word to every every song they ever recorded and sang...you better believe...I will be watching when this premieres, glad you are doing it❤❤❤❤

I was at this show. My girlfriend (at the time) worked at a record store and would get freebie passes for Bill Graham concerts. I remember the day being hot as hell and the crowd exploding at the tempo change. Thanks for the memories. Wonder whatever happened to that girl.

Live music today just doesn't compare. Acts are all about the show, the image, the over-the-top production. Music from the 70's to late 80's was much more about the actual artists playing their music. Two recommendations to really understand this difference: Rush - "YYZ" from their Rush in Rio concert. 60,000 people singing along with a friggin' instrumental! Triumph - at the US Festival 1983. Great set but I'd recommend their hit "Fight the Good Fight" (over 250,000 people attended!!!)

The entire song is a "bird song"...first the bird is wandering around the yard and flying around a few trees in the area...when the song picks up is when the bird decides to leave and it is flying fast, going in circles out of the yard, into the sky and flying happily up high going to a new destination.

Leon Wilkinson on the killer bass, Allen Collens on the amazing lead solo. Steve Gaines on matching lead solo, Gary Rosington on lead bird, Billy Powell on piano, Atticus Pile on drums and Rinnie VanZant vocals. The opening line to this song was said to Stave Gaines by his ex girlfriend during an argument. Sadly, Steve died in the plane crash with his sister Cassie and Ronnie. He never got to see the impact his song has made on us. 45 years later, people see it for the first time and their souls are touched.

They would have all day concerts at the Oakland Coliseum. I went to several “Day on the Green” concerts there- a short drive having grown up in Saratoga, CA. I wish I’d had the opportunity to see them, but was a bit young when they came through. I saw several other amazing bands there though.

Some of us are lucky enough to have seen them live both the original lineup and the phoenix (post crash lineup). It was an experience, a seminal moment hearing this live. The post crash lineup gave it their all and they were good but couldn't quite reach the same level.

I was only 12 years old when they played in Oakland. But you can put a blood pressure thing on the beginning of the song and by the end you can literally watch your pressure gauge getting higher and higher. Great reaction. But Pink Floyd in Columbus Ohio at Ohio State Stadium 🏟️ Over 150 Thousand People Easy plus the people who were on the field. Probably closer to 200 Thousand People. Them college kids were buying all ticket stubs for 5 bucks and who knows how much they are paying outside wanting into the Stadium. Most popular I ever seen at a live Show 94 Pulse Concert Tour. And I've been to over 35 concerts and Pink Floyd wins. Best sound and best Light Show Ever. Just blew my mind

Nick, Thanks for the reaction to this iconic and legendary band and performance. That is the Oakland Coliseum home to the Oakland A's in baseball and Raiders football until the 1980s. Im pretty sure it is scheduled to be demolished in the next year or so. Lots of history in that place. Gary Rossington playing the slide and making the bird sounds, Allen Collins in all white, and Steve Gaines in the red pants, the guitar army. Leon Wilkeson playing the bass, Artimus Pyle on drums, Billy Powell on the piano, and Ronnie Van Zant doing the vocals. Of course the Honkettes with Leslie Hawkins, Cassie Gaines, and JoJo Billingsley on backing vocals. Artimus replaced Bob Burns on the drums in 74 or 75 and Steve Gaines (Cassies brother) came on board in May of 76 after Ed King left the band the year before. I believe this band was just reaching where they wanted to get with talent and musically. Again, much appreciation on the sincere reaction. Maybe youve heard Sweet Home Alabama. The live version at this show is exceptional, plus they have so many other songs to sample from starting with their 1st album named Pronounced which was released in August 1973 to their last album named Street Survivors which was released in October 1977 just a few days before the plane crash.

This is my favorite band as a kid, and I wanted more than anything to see this concert, but my mom said “no”. I was 15 years old and living in a suburb of Sacramento, just a few hours away. Many of my friends were at the Oakland Colosseum for this concert. Thank you, @notablindliberal896 for naming the band members and describing their clothing. I was wondering how I could name them in a comment. Such a tragic ending for Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie. The sun just isn’t as bright as it was before October 20th, 1977. Didn’t get to see them until 1987. Best band ever.
