Their record company (Mushroom Records) took a rejected publicity photo of the sisters without their knowledge, and used it in a trade magazine ad, with text that implied they "more than just sisters." A short while later, Ann was at a party where the sleazy guy asked her how "her lover" was. She thought he was walking about Mike Fisher (band manager and inspiration for "Magic Man") and said, "Oh, Mike's fine, thanks." When he pressed her, she realized what he was talking about and stormed out. She met up with Nancy at their hotel, and that night they wrote this song. The song's basically about music industry dirtbags.

Actually, the song is about a record exec from another label that told the sisters that he thought they were lying about not being in a romantic relationship with each other. He thought all female rockers were lesbians. Barracuda was their final word on the matter.

The rumor was started by an ad placed in Rolling Stone by Heart's record company entitled "It was only our First Time" that intimated Ann and Nancy were lesbian lovers. That caused Heart to break their relationship with Mushroom Records. But the incident that ended up triggering "Barracuda" was one night at a Meet and Greet after a show when a promoter asked Ann "how is you lover?". Ann told him that her boyfriend Michael Fisher was fine, but then the schmuck said "No, your sister" and made another suggestive comment. Ann got enraged and went back to her hotel room and wrote the entire song, at least the lyrics anyway.

The meaning of the song, from SongFacts: "The Wilson sisters revealed in various interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards an ad Mushroom Records placed in trade publications implying that Ann and Nancy were lesbians having an affair. The song focuses on Ann's rage towards a promoter who came up to her after a concert in Detroit asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her then-boyfriend - band member Michael Fisher. After the promoter revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy Wilson, Ann became angry and went back to her hotel room to write the song. Heart is sisters Ann(lead singer) and Nancy Wilson(back up singer and guitarist). They are considered the best female rock band of all time!! Also, they are very good friends with Robert Plant and did many Led Zep covers during their concerts, and were sometimes called "Little Zep". In 2012 they did "Stairway To Heaven" when The Kennedy Center Honors, honored Led Zeppelin while LZ looked on from the balcony!! Robert said if anybody could sing "stairway", it would be Heart🎵💙🎶

Well brother I can attest to the fact that these ladies can kick ass. I saw them, back in 1977 by the way, in a small concert venue on the boardwalk in Asbiry Park, New Jersey. It was August 16th the day Elvis died, for the last song of the encore they played Led Zeppelin's "Rock n Roll" and dedicated it to the King. Another great song is "Crazy on You", there's a version on here from 1977 as well.

This song reference's an experience with an article that was written about the Ann & Nancy being lover's, (their sisters), a promoter from the record company came up with it, said the controversy would be great. It came to Ann's attention when backstage she was asked by a reporter for a magazine, I can't remember which one, about her lover, she thinking it was about who she was dating then, a guy in the band, guy said no Nancy!
