Guys, we’ve had so many black bear encounters while hiking. They typically ignore us completely or will simply look our way and grunt then walk away. Even had a couple of momma bears with cubs and they didn’t bother us a bit. Now, we are cautious and don’t approach them but we don’t worry too much either. Great video and now a place I want to go.

Tara, your elasticity of spirit is tremendous. When you bounce back, you really bounce back, leading the pack on that winding mountainside, into the path of black bears no less! Delightful, entertaining video as always. Good for you, Chad; it's a fact that cold, 12-hour donuts are still edible because they're well-preserved by their frosting.

My wife and I are fairly used to black bear sightings here in California. I don't worry about them much unless I'm real close, which I have been. That said, I can appreciate why some are fearful. With rare exception, if you yield to them, it's pretty mutual. Happy Anniversary!

I taught bear safety classes for our employees worked in remote Alaska locations. The little bit of video that you guys got of the bears it seemed to me that they are very used to people. I do agree with Tara, Chad, you should have had your pepper spray out as soon as you saw the bear. Bears can run 35 MPH. That is about 50 feet per second. They accelerate super fast and the brush don't slow them down. One person can photograph, but the other should have had the spray ready. I hope this doesnt come across as hate, I just want to teach everyone. And there is so much more to learn. Bears are awesome and beautiful creatures. I'm glad you guys got to see them.

I stayed at Cullasaja River RV park memorial day weekend for I believe 5 days last year. It was awesome. Very friendly owners. We had truck problems and they were very helpful with us if we need tools or a ride to the parts store. I think on Saturday they did like a potluck dinner with anyone in the campground that wanted to attend. They had probably 50/50 on full time residents and people coming and going but we got our 40ft toy hauler and had a spot on the water. Definitely somewhere I'd like to go back too. Brevard is a cool town too next time you're over that way.

My folks always had a new to them Class A motorhome growing up. But when it wasn’t practical or just a weekend trip had a truck camper they would stick in the truck bed and roll out. In the spirit of that. You can find cheap used truck campers or even Aliners or Rockwood hardside campers with dormer things for more standing height in the low areas. They also work great for guest overflow for out of town guests.

I have had numerous spots where ‘photographers’ would set up int he best spots and be there for a LONG time…I now just give them some time and then go over and ‘ask’ them to move so the rest of us can enjoy the view and take our photos…usually it goes OK…maybe some under the breath comments, but not usually a refusal…good for me…as long as all of us get to see it!

bear encounters spike the adrenaline. Over the years, My wife and I have encountered several bears. Without a doubt, the most dangerous was hiking in Shenandoah NP. A mama and two Cub on our trail. You know you're too close when you look into their eyeballs. That's the last time we hiked without bear spray.
