The truth about Aunt Helen is even more messed up in the book, cause he frequently calls her his favorite aunt, has you 100% convinced that she was one of his personal champions, and her death was just another thing he blamed himself for. And then we find out the truth. He wasn't just keeping it from everyone else. He was keeping it from himself.

This is really common with victims of childhood abuse, they often feel like the person who did it was their favorite person or they were really close to them. It's how those people are able to get away with it a lot, they convince the kid that it's okay, just a fun little secret between them

Something that I appreciate about this film is how it tackles violence and trauma. It doesn't glorify, it's realistic in showing the repercussions and behaviors, but it also doesn't shame the individuals experiencing those things. I can't think of another coming of age film that handles these topics this well.

Everyone knows the "We accept the love we think we deserve" quote, and it is a wonderful quote, but the one that gets me is "you can't just put everyone's lives ahead of yours and call that love." It's something like that. Sam says it to Charlie and those words are so overlooked, but so meaningful and true

Yeah! And the sentiment rings true until the end, when he’s talking to the psychiatrist he acknowledges the pain of others instead of the pain he has inside.

Fun fact (but also spoiler for the book): There was a scene fully shot and edited together in which Charlie's sister finds out she's pregnant but doesn't want their parents to find out, so she has Charlie take her to an abortion clinic, which is a plot point in the book. However, the MPAA was going to give it a R rating, despite the fact that it's a purely visual segment, so everything is implied, and they don't even say the word "abortion." Against everyone's pleas to keep it in, it was removed because Stephen Chbosky was steadfast on the film having a PG-13 rating so teens (obviously the target audience) would be able to see the movie without their parents.

That's fascinating, but I'm glad it wasn't left in. Though his sister could've used more definition, unless it was spelled out that her boyfriend had knocked her up against her will, this would've needlessly distracted from the film's other messages.

It's interesting how impactful Charlie's interjection in the fight between Patrick and Brad's friends is. I haven't read the book, but I gage from the scene that, by that point, Charlie's trauma is really catching up with him. During the fight, he almost appears to dissacociate and his trauma turns into a moment of serious violent aggression, where he channels it to protect the friends he's afraid of losing. This fear of losing his friendships could stem from losing aunt Helen, but the violence could also signal a subconscious desire to get back at Aunt Helen for her abuse. He seems to feel serious confliction between having loved Aunt Helen and understanding why she was the way she was, but also unable to cope with the reality of what she did to him and wanting to lash out/ destroy himself. Even his bruised fist and quiet utterence of 'Touch my friends again and I'll blind you' is more threatening and chilling than anything the other boys do, because you know in that moment, Charlie's violence is from a real, deep seated place of pent up emotion and abuse, where he could do real damage if triggered.

This movies does a really really good job showing trauma and mental health without glorifying or shaming anyone for it, and showing it can and does happen to everyone. Something I particularly like is the way they show when Charlie gets bad and breaks down. Based on my knowledge and my own experiences, Charlie has a combination of PTSD/CPTSD and psychosis/schizophrenia. As someone with CPTSD and psychosis, I find it's very realistic in the way they show him having not only flashbacks but difficulties with relationships with others, being very observant and quiet or the opposite when we learn about Sam's past, and how Charlie dissociates and things slowly get worse and you think it's still okay until suddenly it isn't.

The book is semi-autobiographical; Stephen Chbosky has said that he relates to Charlie but in many ways his high school experience was different. Other characters, like Sam and Patrick, are manifestations of people he has known throughout his life. Charlie is suffering from depression and PTSD from Aunt Helen's abuse, which he had subconsciously repressed and blocked from his brain. Charlie's letters are to the reader/viewer. "We accept the love we think we deserve" is one of my favourite lines ever. It sums up why so many people stay in abusive relationships. Some people have trouble believing that the characters (especially Sam, a music fanatic) would not only not recognize David Bowie's "Heroes" but would not be able to discover its identity for such a long time. But Stephen Chbosky admitted that this was true to his own life as a teenager in the early 1990s (especially not being able to find the song since this was before the internet and Google). Mr. Anderson claims that it was Charles Dickens who coined the term "cliffhanger", but it was in fact Thomas Hardy in his 1873 novel A Pair of Blue Eyes. The DVD features deleted scenes that were in the book, such as Charlie's parents being told by Mr. Anderson that Candace is being abused by her boyfriend, to which his parents take direct intervention, and Charlie taking Candace to the clinic to have an abortion after she tells him she's pregnant. Also, in the movie during the Secret Santa party, Charlie gives Patrick a piece of paper but an extended version showed the paper contained a poem written by Charlie's friend who died by suicide. Logan Lerman was in the Percy Jackson films which, if you haven't seen them, I recommend. He and Emma Watson also starred together in Noah with Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Hopkins. Ezra Miller, who plays Patrick, is in Fantastic Beasts, The Flash/Justice League and We Need to Talk About Kevin. The last movie I haven't seen but knowing the basic story (they play a psychopathic mass murderer) makes me think they (Ezra uses they/them pronouns) weren't acting that much there. Miller has been arrested and charged multiple times for assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. They choked a woman at a bar in Reykjavík, Iceland (where I live). There were several different incidents in Hawaii where threats/physical altercations took place. A temporary order of protection was issued against Miller on behalf of 18 year old Tokata Iron Eyes - Miller had allegedly been grooming her since she was 12 and they were 23. There are a lot more of these and the fact they aren't in prison is SHOCKING. Mae Whitman, who plays Mary Elizabeth, has been in movies such as Independence Day, One Fine Day, Hope Floats, The Factory and The DUFF, along with shows like Chicago Hope and Parenthood. She also guest starred in Friends S3E10 as the girl selling cookies to go to space camp. Nina Dobrev, who plays Candace, is most known for The Vampire Diaries, but has also been in Degrassi: The Next Generation and movies such as The Final Girls, Flatliners remake, Dog Days and Netflix Christmas movie Love Hard. Kate Walsh, who plays Charlie and Candace's mom, was on Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off show Private Practice, along with more recent shows like 13 Reasons Why and Emily in Paris. Dylan McDermott, who plays the dad, has been in Steel Magnolias, Miracle On 34th Street remake, legal drama The Practice and American Horror Story. Melanie Lynskey, who plays Aunt Helen, made her film debut at age 17 in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures from 1994, starring alongside Kate Winslet and earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of Pauline Parker who murdered her mother along with her friend/lover Juliet Hulme in Christchurch in 1954. She's also been in movies such as Ever After, Coyote Ugly, Sweet Home Alabama and Up in the Air, as well as a main role on Two and a Half Men, Yellowjackets and miniseries Rose Red based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. Stephen Chbosky re-wrote the original script for the 2017 live action reboot of Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle (Chbosky and Watson developed a close relationship during the production of this movie). Rocky Horror reaction please, it's a classic! It's based on the 1973 musical stage production and is a tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies from the 1930s through the 1960s. The film stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien (who also wrote the screenplay and the music) and rock legend Meat Loaf. The story starts with a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain, near a mansion where they ask to call for help. The mansion is occupied by various odd characters, including Dr. Frank N. Furter, a mad scientist and an alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania. It's wacky but so good and the music is great.

Love how it's through his letters to someone he doesnt know and I love that part at towards the end where you can see his sister's reaction when he calls at her friends house because automatically she knows something wrong and I love how she stops everything to get her friends attention to call the cops and also kind of like the friend for also somewhat knowing somethings wrong and not just trying to brush off the call.

Every time I watch this movie I notice more subtle things that I hadn't noticed before. The one thing in this movie that I absolutely hate is when Mary Elizabeth compares how long she's been friends with Patrick and Sam to how long Charlie has known them. I hate it when people compare time knowing people like this because it devalues the relationships that other people have, and it never matters how long you're friends with someone, what matters is how close you become and how well you connect with them. I understand why it's in the film (and the book also, I believe), but it always gets to me whenever I rewatch that scene. Other than that, this movie is so good that I watch it at least once a year.

The more I see this movie, the more I like it. Maybe it’s because every time I watch it I’m further away from my own high school experience. I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety, so I really feel for people who have a more severe mental illness like this. There’s no switch to shut off the pain or, in Charlie’s case, the images, and it’s a hard way to live. There’s not enough empathy for mental illness.

I read the book of this in 7th grade, and what was even worse about his Aunt was that she SA'd him when he was a kid, and even after that he remembers her as loving her so much, she was his favorite person, and after her death he blamed himself for her going to get him his birthday present and that's why she crashed. Which has got to be a ton of confusing emotions to deal with as a child, he just shut it out and that's what caused all the flashbacks and psychological problems growing up. He didn't know how to deal with it so he disassociated from it, that's why he kept flashing back to her leaving and that moment in the bedroom with them kissing, he was disassociating from that moment, his mind couldn't comprehend the things he that were happening, her leaving, remembering the truth about his aunt and her wanting to kiss him. It was a ton of crazy thoughts and emotions all piling in on him and he totally forgot everything between those two moments in time. On a different question my High School Graduation was a bit different. Covid hit in my senior year of high school. I was home on the last day and we didn't even celebrate graduation, the only thing my school did was post photos of all of us online in our outfits, we got them sent to us and our hats and diplomas. and a couple months later they opened a walking photo gallery for seniors to take graduation photos, but I never did that. I was just glad to be out of school. Tho the routine was nice to have something to do every day.

The author has made very slight hints to the fact that this story very much might be semi auto biographical... Especially in the 10-year anniversary edition of the book where he send a letter to us in modern time ....kind of gives an update on the characters and where they ended up in life. I'd say the hints are tiny ... But most people that I talked with... agree that...yeah. the author most likely dealt with things VERY similar to what Charlie has in the movie and book.

I love your reactions. People with special skills have them for a reason. With extra power comes extra responsibility. When you`re good at something, you help those who are struggling. When you`re someone who makes friends easily, you approach the ones who act like wallflowers. Most of the time, it takes so little to turn the tables. This movie is a good example of how simple gestures can change someone else`s life. Thank you, Nick!

Love the reaction :) In case it wasn't clear, the movie is set in the 80's (which is why you don't know the music, I suspect ;) )

The reason you have no idea where the film is going is that it's a coming-of-age drama. We're like the children and teenagers in those films, unable to predict the next event due to a lack of experience. That's what I love about this particular sub-genre, the unpredictability of it all - anything could happen. I'll just take the opportunity mention a particularly underrated coming-of-age drama - The Fabelmans (2022). There's about three poorly produced reaction videos to that on the whole of KZbin.

Emma Watson is very good, but Charlie and Patrick’s characters burst to life as played by Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller . I found the movie as good as the book, even though the author/movie director made some minor different choices.

I love seeing a movie set and filmed in Pittsburgh’s south hills. I’m born and raised there. It’s so cool to see the see Rocky Horror Picture show at the Hollywood theater (I actually snuck out with a friend when we were in 8th grade to see it at midnight at that same exact theater and it was similar with people dressed up and yelling at the screen and things like that). I also drive through that tunnel into town every day for work. So it really hits home.

Excellent reaction!!! Love this movie a lot!! All of them are great actors. And the book is even better. Now, I recommend you to react a movie in which Logan Lerman is and that movie is "Stuck in Love". That movie is also wonderful.

Definitely one of the best book adaptations. Emma needed to spend more time on her American accent, though.
