One major memory about this movie was how Charlie's sister was on stand by, knowing a regression from Charlie was not a matter of if, but when. Her reaction was immediate and probably rehearsed in her head over and over. This was something that was always with her no matter where she was or what she was doing. It is going to happen and she was always ready. The idea of her constant dread and fear is mind blowing. I can only compare it to having a parent with a heart condition, and the child is constantly worrying and vigilant.

its really too bad that they cut all the scenes of Charlie and her bonding together dealing with her abortion. It really drives home how close they became

The truth about Aunt Helen is even more messed up in the book, cause he frequently calls her his favorite aunt, has you 100% convinced that she was one of his personal champions, and her death was just another thing he blamed himself for. And then we find out the truth. He wasn't just keeping it from everyone else. He was keeping it from himself.

I think I remember reading something in relation to this movie about how some family predators will give extra presents and slightly special attention, both as a form of "apology" and also to keep them quiet. Then Charlie says Aunt Helen basically used to do that with him and it just hits so much harder. And especially since the parents had no idea

There's a great deleted scene during his isolation from the friend group where his sister finds out she's pregnant by Ponytail Derek and she gets an abortion with Charlie's help. Shame they cut it to avoid an R rating, it reallly established their relationship.

This is one of my favorite films of all time! The 1st time I watched it, was a rough night for me, to say the least. I related to too many of the characters, to put it mildly. I eventually showed it to my dad, who is rather picky with what films he likes and he loved it too. He used to not share much about his past with us but when we watched this film together. It was the 1st time he actually started sharing with us what his childhood was like.

This book/film is the closest depiction of my actual teen experience, and the people who were my friends and peers, that I've seen up to this point (I graduated high school in '86). Hit very close to the bone in too many respects, but rather than dragging me into self-indulgent melancholy it made me glad to know some things are universal and most of us survive them.

Just started this and had to pause to define “wallflower” for you guys. Back in the old days… at least early 1800… probably before. Women had to wait to be asked to dance. So they’d be all dressed up pretty and standing against the wall together if no one asked. Some ladies could stand there through multiple dances… sometimes the entire season… if you never got asked, you eventually become a spinster and never marry and that was the worst possible outcome for your life (back then) so getting asked to dance was a step towards being popular, being courted… eventually getting married. Not getting asked to dance was essentially the death of all that. So being called a wallflower is one of the worst insults. Especially because usually it was kinda true. And if you were known as a wallflower… chances are guys would think something was wrong with you and it would be even more unlikely that they’d ask you to dance.

In the book Charlie there’s a poem that’s really good! Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines he wrote a poem and he called it "chops" because that was the name of his dog and thats what it was all about his teacher gave him an A and a gold star and his mother hung it on the kitchen door and read it to his aunts. that was the year Father Tracy took all the kids to the zoo and he let them sing on the bus and his little sister was born with tiny nails and no hair and his mother and father kissed a lot and the girl around the corner sent him a Valentine signed with a row of X's and he had to ask his father what the X's meant and his father always tucked him in bed at night and was always there to do it once on a piece of white paper with blue lines he wrote a poem he called it "Autumn" because that was the name of the season and that's what it was all about and his teacher gave him an A and asked him to write more clearly and his mother never hung it on the kitchen door because of the new paint and the kids told him that Father Tracy smoked cigars and left butts on the pews and sometime they would burn holes that was the year his sister got glasses with thick lenses and black frames and the girl around the corner laughed when he asked her to go see santaclaus and the kids told him why his mother and father kissed a lot and his father never tucked him in bed at night and his father got mad when he cried for him to do it once on a paper torn from his notebook he wrote a poem and he called it "Innocence: A Question" because that was the question about his girl and thats what it was all about and his professor gave him an A and a strange steady look and his mother never hung it on the kitchen door because he never showed her that was the year Father Tracy died and he forgot how the end of the Apostles's Creed went and he caught his sister making out on the back porch and his mother and father never kissed or even talked and the girl around the corner wore too much make up that made him cough when he kissed her but he kissed her anyway because it was the thing to do and at 3 am he tucked himself into bed his father snoring soundly that's why on the back of a brown paper bag he tried another poem and he called it "Absolutely Nothing" because that's what it was really all about and he gave himself an A and a slash on each damned wrist and he hung it on the bathroom door because this time he didn't think he could reach the kitchen

In the book, there is a main theme in everything Charlie experiences. It's not highlighted in the movie as much, but it's the circle of trauma and specifically intergenerational trauma in families. Charlie's dad is an example of "breaking out" from the vicious circle, as he was physically abused in childhood and swore to never do anything like that. Aunt Helen is an example of continuing the truma, because she herself was a victim of similar events in childhood. If I remember correctly Charlie's best friend once said to him that "a person can either be a sponge or a filter" and it just explains everythig perfectly.

Love this movie because I was like Charlie except more weird and an more of an outcast, even with the other outcasts at local concerts, I was in the background and not many even tried to be friends with me

I forgot to mention… since you liked this film, you’ll definitely like “Wonder Boys” with Michael Douglas and Tobey McGuire. It was also filmed in Pittsburgh.
