I can't believe that this is a lesson intended for working authors, because Sarrah, you have created a LIFE lesson here. This is one of the most marvelous lessons of time management I have ever seen. (Truth be told, I have practiced these principles in the past, and I have actually achieved a great deal in my life with them, but I needed this reminder. More important, I needed the validation and positivity that Sarrah provides here. Thank you, thank you, thank you!)

As a seamstress I can say know what you need beforehand also helps with keeping your workload down. You don't want to discover something you need to make, you did wrong because you missed one measurement (repeat a 2 day project)

Also. If you have trouble with self-care, put self-care on your to-do list. And if you're in a place health wise where getting up and getting dressed is a challenge, put in on your to-do list so you can tick it off. Plan for the time you have, and plan for the energy you have.

I've struggled to be consistent with any planner system, but yours has been one of the most uplifting and encouraging systems for me. I feel that my adhd and trauma history has given me lots of shame and the compounded issue of time-blindness greatly contributes towards feelings of self doubt, anxiety and depression regarding my difficulty with goals and productivity. Taking your course has given me the formula to give myself permission to mess up, to pause or change plans, to rest. Whether it's realizing that I'm putting too much pressure on myself, or that I really have been doing the best I can, those reality checks always hit me hard, like a big bear hug to myself that I didn't know I needed. And whenever I stop planning or being consistent with my goals, I just come back to HB90 and start fresh for the quarter I'm in, and it just feels like it's all really going to be ok. ♥

Hey! I just wanted to say I love how your videos are still so helpful. There are many people out there who have courses and they give you the bare minimum information and then tell you to buy their course, and it feels like you wasted time watching an ad and didn't really learn anything. Now you're angry and unsatisfied, rather than grateful and willing to give them money. But your videos have been beyond helpful and I'd really love to join your HB90 and Publish and Thrive. With other people I just feel like they're just trying to get a sale, but I really feel how you truely want to help and I'm just so grateful for you. So thanks for all you do for us!

Enneagram 3 here too. Oh man does ALL of this relate. The last 5+ quarters using your kanban board method have been revolutionizing (I even got my Mom who runs a memoir coaching business to give it a try the last 2 quarters, and she's LOVING it). My dream is to one day be able to afford your HB90 Bootcamp course. Hopefully I'll have the disposable income to sign up once the hubby finishes his schooling. I get so much out of your videos every time. Thank you for sharing so much of your heart with all of us!

Ugh I am still not ready to admit that there isn’t actually time for everything, I know that’s why I’m resistant to estimating realistic times for tasks. It’s painful to hear you say it but I know it’s the reminder I need! (And you make a great point that it isn’t getting done anyway, so we might as well prioritize consciously!)

Huh! I'm #2 Discipline in the Clifton Strengths, and it literally never occurred to me that most people don't have an instinctive sense of how much time their tasks will take and whether it will fit the time they have available. When I'm planning my days, it's like I have a little subconscious calculator in the back of my mind doing all the calculations that you're doing explicitly: how much time will X, Y, Z take, how much time do I have, what are my priorities, will they fit in the time I have available, etc.? I never realized until this moment that this was something that not everyone does automatically. (To be clear: sometimes I still get overwhelmed. But that's usually when I'm on tight deadlines and literally have more tasks that MUST get done in a 2-3 day timeframe than I have time to do them. At times like that I have to very ruthlessly prioritize. But most of my time isn't like that.)

Treating the tasks blocks like a game would work SO much better for me! I'm so glad you suggested this! I tend to skip making the lists because I get so discouraged when I have a bunch of unchecked boxes. It's probably because most of us don't write down all the little things we do. This was very helpful- I want to be better at planning realistically! Thank you so much, Sarra! Amazing video as always❤

@HeartBreathings
@HeartBreathings Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's such a good observation! I started to notice a pattern that I could be productive one day and then the next, I was useless. Day on, Day off. And it's okay to be that way if that's how you want to do it - one get it done day, one rest day - but I realized I needed to be intentional about it rather than being a victim to it and constantly feeling bad about it!

The time estimate needing to come first before your to do list is something I needed. I likely have undiagnosed ADHD (my siblings were diagnosed in school) and time management is something I struggle with. My to do list, especially as a teacher, is always long. The inability to realistically estimate my time has made me put a bunch of stuff on my list and like you said I feel bad afterwards. The pushing yourself and it's not getting done is so true! Thank you for this video. I need it. I'm looking forward to trying to figure out how to use time blocks to see if it'll help my brain with being more realistic with time.
@HeartBreathings
@HeartBreathings Жыл бұрын
I hope it's helpful! I know that with ADHD it's common to have a hard time estimating how long things will take, but hopefully it will help just to think about how much time you really have first and then maybe set a maximum number of tasks you can start with. Like okay, if I Have 2 hours, I can start with a list of 3 tasks. If I finish them, here are tasks waiting in the wings, so to speak! I'm not sure what will be most helpful for you, but I'm excited you're on the journey!
@theredemu

@@HeartBreathings I like the maximum number of tasks to start with idea. I think it's easier to think in 30 minute increments since I do like the pomodoro thing. Thank you for replying to me. ❤️

I am here for the writing stuff, and don’t think your method would exactly work for me, but I am fascinated nonetheless. It does make me reconsider ‘to do’ lists and time management, which I guess was the overall point. I will probably come back and rewatch after I think on it some.

I've been implementing a system where I do MAX 3 things in one day, and that only includes like writing, work shift, posting on social media, doing my videos, etc. That doesn't include things like showering, cooking, taking out the rubbish, calling a friend, or other things that I don't consider "work". I can break these 3 things down however much I want and spread them over a couple days, but never more than 3 work things. Erin On Demand has a similar system that she turned into a planner. That's been working for me so far, but I'm glad I watched this video to get new ideas and understand how other people approach these things!
@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames Жыл бұрын
One thing I've noticed is that if l'm migrating a task over and over again it's because of 2 things. 1. I haven't broken it down far enough (add dirt to the aloe, should have been: find a pan to get the dirt). Or 2. The task really wasn't that important, and it shouldn't be on the to-do list, it should have been on the someday maybe list (fold dinner napkins into swans). 💖🌞🌵😷

This was such a timely message for me. I just took a promotion at work doing things I know I am good at and can excel at, but the switch from one position to the other has left me feeling like I made a mistake because I'm unrealistically trying to do way too many things in the 8 hours I have allotted to me during the work day and it's slowly turning me into the kind of person I don't wan to be. I'm going to use some of these methods for the next week or two and see if that clears some space for me to be more realistic and kinder to myself.

@HeartBreathings
@HeartBreathings Жыл бұрын
I should have mentioned that I know it's difficult for some people to estimate time! If it's not something you feel comfortable with, you could simply limit the number of"bigger" tasks to one per day. Or 3 smaller projects that you feel you can finish realistically. See how that goes. If you can do more, increase to 4 a day until you find a sweet spot. As for doing other things, you could try using a timer for 20 minutes of focus and then allow yourself to do other things and then come back to a focus timer?
@juliegolick
@juliegolick Жыл бұрын
Instead of time estimates, can you do a prioritized list instead? Rank all your tasks with "most important" at the top, and then work down the list. Even if you don't get everything done (you probably won't!), you'll still have done your most important thing(s).
