Thank you for all the videos Michigan rocks. You sent me on a journey to find the perfect rock for my wifes beautiful green eyes. That little journey turned into an obsession to rock hunt. Now ive completed my first cab, a heart pendant the color of my wifes eyes. She loves it and never takes it off. Though i had to do it all on a 3 inch grinder with two wheels and alot of refrabricating, it turned out great. All this thanks to watching your videos and learning from you. I plan to follow in your footsteps and create my own beautiful cabachons.

That's really cool, Thomas. When I started making videos, I had no idea that I would influence so many people to buy rock tumblers and other equipment, or to get out and start rock hunting. I have had a lot of people tell me that they have or are going to travel to Michigan because of my videos. I really appreciate you telling me about making a heart pendant for your wife. I love hearing about stuff like that.

@@MichiganRocks being able to see the entire journey from shore to jewelry (or polishing/cutting), certainly makes me appreciate the effort. About how long would you estimate each pendant takes?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tanya_LitLife That's hard to say. I spend a good part of the day Monday making hearts. I cut out 14, drilled all the holes, smoothed out the edges, and dopped them (stuck them to sticks with wax). Then I finished the rest of six of them. I didn't really time myself, but I'd say that took between six and eight hours. That doesn't include slabbing the puddingstone, which is done somewhat automatically in my slab saw. I have to clamp the rock in and then adjust for the next cut every half hour or so. So maybe an hour per rock? I try to speed things up by mass producing them as much as possible. Doing just one would take longer because of set up and clean up.

@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 жыл бұрын
My goal was less than five minutes, but I didn't quite get there. You're right about how much time it takes to make a video like that. It's kind of a pain to move all the camera equipment every time I do the next step. It was filmed over about three days because I was doing quite a few hearts at the same time. One of the most annoying things is trying to eliminate other noises. Each time I filmed, I had to turn off two rock tumblers, unplug a refrigerator and freezer, and turn off the furnace. After all that, you can't believe how often the water heater kicked on just as I was about to start filming. That's harder to turn off, so I just end up waiting. I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining, but since you mentioned it, I thought I'd confirm what you said. I also spend quite a few hours editing. I have an external microphone now and it takes a while to sync up all the video with the audio.

Thanks! Believe it or not, I haven't made very many things from puddingstone at all. Mostly I just polish them whole. I think the key is to just make sure every heart has red jasper, and preferably another color besides the matrix. I have made a lot more things out of Petoskey Stone.
@thinkcivil1627
@thinkcivil1627 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks The pudding stones looked like they were relatively easy to work with on the saw. Did you meet tricky areas of more and less resistance as you came off the matrix into the other minerals? That was my first thought.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 жыл бұрын
@@thinkcivil1627 No, there is not too much difference. Nothing that would affect the way I work the stone. I have worked with other materials like that where part is very soft and another part is very hard. This wasn't like that. A couple that I know makes a lot of jewelry from Michigan rocks. They keep all their scrap puddingstone and hire me to drill holes and tumble them for beads. I have drilled at least 500 beads for them. Most of the time, the hole goes through the quartzite matrix, but sometimes I had to drill through the red jasper. It was a little easier to notice that the jasper was harder when drilling, but it still wasn't too bad. They gave me about ten little Lake Superior agate pieces to drill one year. That didn't go so well. I'd either burn out three drill bits trying to drill 1/4 inch, or the rock would break from the heat. I don't know if I successfully drilled any of those. I quit trying after destroying about three of them.
@thinkcivil1627
@thinkcivil1627 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks You are not alone burning up drill bits on agates. It's why you see a lot of wrapped agate jewelry. If you drill a partial hole, it helps to twist the end of the wire going into the partially drilled hole and use a premium epoxy. They seem to hold better that way. The bottom line is that, at a hardness scale of 7 plus, it's just difficult to drill any hole into an agate.

The trick is to freeze it and then let it warm up after taking it out of the freezer. They often fall off on their own at that point.

@@donnalantz7981 Thanks for ordering a T-shirt! The rock hearts for sale in the shop were made by me, I'm just not the one sending them out. I hate packing things up to mail out, so I sell them through a little religious store here in town.

Just caught this video! Was thinking about making some hearts but didn't know how this will help but I don't have a cab machine like you do! I might have to use my dremel! Thanks for sharing!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose it could be done with a Dremel, but it will take more skill to keep it smooth. If you used a hard rock and then tumbled it in a vibratory tumbler, that would eliminate some of the roughness but retain the heart shape.

Dude! This was rad, I’m a big fan of videos where it’s just the sound of making. Don’t get me wrong, I also love the timber of Mr Michigan Rocks’ voice and your vocal input 😉 but this was really cool. One thing I noticed is that the rocks are so much more silicated (I think that’s the word) than what I thought until I was holding the ones you sent... speaking of which I am going to open tonight. I hope you know it’s not because of anything other than my absolute squirrel (A.D.D.) brain that I haven’t opened the package fully yet. I invisioned sitting down with a warm cup of tea and peacefully opening a box of beauties from Michigan while filming it, but those non busy moments have been few and far between lately 🤯🤦‍♂️ But I do love wondering what I’ll see next in the box. So tonight! I’m doing it! Warm tea or not!!!!!!!!!

Ps honestly, ask anyone who sends me stuff. I open them so late. I think a big part of it is I don’t feel worthy (insert Wayne’s World reference 🤣), of the massive generosity it takes to send a package like that around the world.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 жыл бұрын
You haven't opened the rest of the box yet? I tear into a box like a kid on Christmas morning. I guess you're into savoring the experience. I also eat really fast. My wife always tells me to slow down and enjoy it, but I'm having a great time enjoying it quickly. I made a video before Christmas showing some Christmas ornaments I made and it was a real flop. I thought it would do much better. I decided that it might be because the video was sort of long with all my explanations along the way. So I decided to try something different here. I have seen some wood working videos with no talking, just the sounds of the tools. Some of those are pretty cool, so I tried to model my video after those. The goal was to keep it under five minutes, but it ended up being eight and a half. It still isn't doing very well compared to my other videos, so I'm not sure what to do to make these appeal to more people. I think you're only the second person to comment on the lack of talking in the video. No one complained, so I'm not sure what to think.
