I love Nick’s arc. He’s never considered that he was anything other than straight, and then he meets Charlie. While he goes through a lot of questioning and confusion about his sexuality, and you can see his struggle, the one thing that he never doubted or was confused about was how he felt about Charlie. It’s almost as if Charlie was his lighthouse as he navigated choppy water. Corny, I know, but it’s the image that popped into my head. 😉❤️

Yeah. He's not confused about whether or not he likes Charlie; he's confused about what that *means* for him, his identity, and his self-image. Having been in exactly Nick's position, I feel like they handled that bit really well.

One of my favorite things about the series is the attention to detail. Nick started wearing the hoodie that he let Charlie wear during the snow scene more and more. Even wearing it the day he ran through the rain to see Charlie.

The gay test scene is a roller coaster for me, because I cant help but laugh when I watch it but at the same time is a situation that clenches my heart and I can relate to it, because I literally did the same thing when I started questioning my sexuality. I cant even explain it

You nailed my favorite thing about the show! Sure, it’s great for all the things it constantly gets praised for. The cast, the representation etc. But what I think is really special that gets glossed over sometimes…that you picked up on…is these characters are being open and communicating with each other. So many confused kids in Nick’s situation would have been all over the opportunity to use Imogen as an easy beard. Yet here Nick is actually taking steps to be true to himself, and communicating his issues to Charlie. It continues in the rest of the series as well. It’s rare and special and really gives viewers going through the same thing a lot of hope.

Yes, I think the program does a great job of healthy communication… the only time Nick really lets Charlie down is when he doesn’t tell him about Imogen right after she asked him out.

As a straight woman this is exactly what I love about this show. I'm so tired of watching narcissistic drama, and overjoyed to watch so much emotionally mature behaviour and communication. I'm overjoyed for my lgbtqia+ friends and family members, but I have to say that for me personally, this is the best love story I've seen in my entire life, and that's because of the honest communication from such emotionally mature characters, it's just a blessing and a gift and I couldn't be happier.

I hadn't thought about it like that before, but the healthy communication is refreshing! I did notice though that teenagers aren't this kind/drama free/mature, at least in shows and movies. I was worried that Tara and Darcy would accidentally or purposefully out them, or that after Nick had the honest conversation with Imogen that she would out him out of spite. They're all young and dealing with their own complicated feelings. But neither happened. Semi-related, I was also ready for them to get caught every time they kissed because that's what we're used to seeing. It was a relief that they just got to have those sweet moments. The show is just so wholesome and lovely.

Exactly. One of the worst things that's been done to death in romance stories is piling on the drama. Generations of young people ( women specifically ) have been taught to expect turmoil in relationships, and if it's too "easy", it's boring.

I know a lot of people give Imogen a hard time and I think they forget that she is a clueless teenage girl with a big crush on a beautiful teenage boy. She has no idea any of the Charlie stuff is going on. And if you look at it, you can see she’s basically being bullied by Harry and Ben into trying to get with Nick. She fears that if she doesn’t follow through with what they are urging her to do that she will be a target of both of them. I don’t agree with the comment she made in the cafeteria but she’s basically a really good friend to Nick. 💙💛

Something I love is how the lead characters defy stereotypes. At first sight, we think we know them. Rugby lad Nick is obviously going to be homophobic, arrogant, a jerk. But he’s friendly and kind, and doesn’t care that Charlie’s gay. And Charlie! We think he’s nerdy and geeky with no athletic ability, never sticks up for himself, no courage. A doormat. But he’s the fastest runner at school, and sure as hell sticks up for himself when he finds Ben’s betrayed him. Courage? Never mind the rugby match, though he shows great courage there. In the Kiss Room, Nick loses his nerve when he realizes he’s said too much by admitting his crush might not be a girl. You can see it in his face. But when Charlie realizes he’s really got a chance here, he goes for it like a barracuda. Gently, yes, and carefully, knowing if he pushes too hard Nick will run for it. But he goes for it, walking a tight rope all the way, and he gets it. That takes nerve.

Watching reactions really reminds you how different Heartstopper felt. Most queer teen shows feature lots of drama and heartbreak. Which sure can be realistic but gets old after a while. Heartstopper has very carefuly created difficult moments, but it all ties together in a positive uplifting manner.

Every time I see the scene with nick about to take Charlie’s hand, I imagine nick thinking in that moment while he’s looking at Charlie sleeping saying “oh my god he’s so beautiful” there’s no way that’s not what nicks thinking. Like he’s so tempted and taken back by Charlie’s essence and his utter perfection that he’s willing to go for it but he’s scared. I think it was his fear of never getting to keep charlie and get to know him that pushed him to try.

Well she’s year 11 so she’d be 15 or 16. I do get your point that, for the most part, she doesn’t do anything wrong. That said, she did lie about being with Nick and was sorta ignoring Nick signaling that he’s not interested. So it makes sense to not like her, even if hating her with the passion one hates Ben or Harry is unjustified.

omg I was so excited when this popped up in my notifications! as for why everyone is so worried about Nick's dating life: you have to remember that Nick is like the most popular kid in their year, if not in the school, so everyone is of course going to pay attention to what he does and who he dates. he's also the captain of the rugby team so there's that. part of why I think Harry in particular is so obsessed with Nick is that he can only make friends because of how much money he has but Nick is genuinely likeable, so Harry tries to feed off of Nick's popularity as much as possible. anyway, can't wait for 5 and 6 because they are my faves of the season! ❤
