Therapist analyzes The Tale of Jenny and Screech by Ren to discuss to empower people to write their own story, to challenge individuals when they find themselves speaking the language of violence, and to remind others that context causes compassion. This trilogy by Ren is a powerful tale of intergenerational wounding and the impact it has on individuals and society.

You said it all. To Ren’s motivation for doing this, he said that it’s too easy for people to turn away from situations like this…he wants people to confront the harsh reality of intergenerational violence. It’s not easy to watch, and Ren said it’s not easy for him to perform. You reacted to the moment at the beginning of Violet’s tale where Ren the artist has to pause and gather himself so that he could perform the song. In the old tradition of Bards, that’s called putting on the Minstrel’s Mask in preparation for telling a horrible story. He said it takes a piece of him as well. This song makes me 100% want to see a Screech and help him, or find a Jenny or Violet and help them find their voice (I have 2 teenage daughters). So mission accomplished. Think of what a great writer and storyteller you’d have to be to create this song and not have it come off as exploitative…he was so careful about so many details…but one that really stood out to me was that he never put himself in the first person “shoes” of Jenny and Violet…and only told their story through narration, while he did assume the roles of Screech and Stevie, because he actually can understand their lived experience. This guy is doing art, music, filmmaking, snd storytelling at a completely different level. Also, you may enjoy knowing that he actually appears to be a sweet goofball in real life…but he’s lived through such heaviness that he just seems to have a different level of power.

💯 agree! Ren has experienced so much tragedy of his own and yet has found a way to channel that into not only incredible art but a captivating story that leads us towards empathy and compassion for each person in the story. Imagine how much different our world could be if we could see past the pain with eyes of compassion and know where to go for help.

A subtle but powerful line that hits is "turning to the doctor Violet broke her silence and she cried if I'm to die, please let my babies stay alive". The whole way through the song she's silent right through the worst moments of her life until literally no one left is able to speak up for her and she breaks the silence. I interpret Violet as metaphorical. Allegedly, Ren wrote the first two tales based on an actual incident of a young boy killing a young girl and then getting shot. In the real case (if this story is true), it's unlikely they were related. But they were likely both children of generational trauma.

@@Hoop_23 true, originally they were released separately, however once Violet's tale was released, it changes the narrative in very powerful ways. Ren knew this, and released the trilogy together in one video because of it. The revelation at the end changes up everything and injects empathy into the flood of emotions experienced through Violet's Tale. Violet's Tale is so powerful that many people that dont have Jenny and Screech's Tale fresh in their minds miss the end completely, and are just left with the horror of Violet's Tale. There's reason why Ren marked the Trilogy altogether as the Official Music Video. Respectfully. 🤓

This is such an insightful reaction. Ive been a 911 dispatcher for almost 20 years. Long enough to see (hear) generational violence. I'm also a domestic violence survivor and because Ren was so spot on with the realism of this, I worried about him. "Do you think I want to do this Violet?" Is a statement that comes out of many domestic abusers. My hope is that someone that is an abuser see's this video and now knows how appalling it is. I also hope that someone that is going through domestic violence can see how they need to get out of the situation before it's to late. Im so glad that shortly after I discovered The Tales of Jenny and Screech I also found Ren's 1 million subscribers video that showed the caring person that he is. If you haven't seen that I highly recommend it ❤❤

I am a licensed foster parent and have taken courses on trauma based care, and ACEs is a huge part of what’s discussed. Your perspective on these three videos is different than any reaction I have seen so far, because you are literally explaining trauma from a therapist perspective and how these adverse experiences can completely mold the person forever. I have also learned through TBRI (trust based relational intervention) that trauma physically changes the make up of a person’s brain. It’s very hard to reverse the behaviors that come from these changes and the physical look of the brain mostly stays the same. It takes a very long time and consistency to get the trust of someone who has been traumatized this severely. Thanks for all the insight you offer. It’s a breath of fresh air to get this kind of conversation.

Genuinely, I feel like the biggest artistic flex Ren pulled is letting us feel our complacency. Cause we hear Jenny and Screeches stories and they're stories we've seen on TV before, in movies before. We know this violence, it's not as shocking to us as it probably should be. And then comes Violet's tale. And we're suckered in by the first two songs making us believe it's a play on a morality tale. Then Violet's tale asks us how we feel about *ourselves* that the first two songs don't make us feel like the third one. Why we suddenly *care* that screech was 14, that Jenny was walking home alone in heels at 14. We care at the end in a way that we didn't at the start. To me, as an artistic expression it's fantastic. Truly one of the best pieces of art made in ages.

Then we have the faster part, which instantly makes me think of Screech fleeing from the scene of the crime, running until he's worn out and breathless. Setting the scene through music, without a single word.

There are so many layers to this. When he says 'its such a shame' i beleive its a comentary on how us as a society reacts to these situations. We read these stories every day, they're broadcast to us on the news, documentaries, tictok crime content. And we all gloss over to some extent or another. With the phrase 'its such a shame' or some iteration of. Even it not in the moments afterwards, its our conclusions we make to be able to carry on with our lives without it affecring us emotionally. Ren, I beleive is highlighting this. The societal need to diminish its impacts whislt holding up a mirror and making us face it.

31:41 No, the first time i heard screeches tale i understood him. Even as i hated him. Theres no excuse for what he did, there are however, explanations. And if you can understand WHY someone did something, well then, maybe you can prevent it in the future. And to be clear, i hate screech as much, or more than, i hate myself. But i do UNDERSTAND him. You dont have to agree with why someone acted HOW they did to understand WHY they acted like they did.

Thank you for listening to us. I think you can probably see why this particular trilogy needs to be in one sitting, it wouldn't convey the same message if the pieces were separated in time. I can reassure you that though Ren has some other tracks in multiples (Money game 1 to 3 and Love music 1-4), they are not 'bardcore' stories and can be enjoyed one by one. You're reactions are excellent and insightful. I was not subbed before, but I am now, thank you.

“What in the Shakespearean tragedy“ are the exact words that fell out of my mouth, the first time I saw these tales. When watching Ren I’ve often thought that Shakespeare would gladly clear the stage of his players to make time for Ren to perform. Really appreciate your reaction and ability to empathize with all of cast, including Screech. I’m a student of the teachings of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, with his work in NonViolent Communications: A Language of Compassion. It wouldn’t surprise me if you were familiar with it. If not, I believe you would be grateful to add it to your knowledge base. Love what you do here in building this connective community for growth and healing. You matter and what you are doing makes a positive difference in our lives. 🫶

Wow. You nailed it. As a Ren fan I was waiting for you to say how good Ren was. But you saw it from your perspective and saw through it straight away and told your truth as a therapist. Your empathy is very commendable. What I mean is, I was expecting a critique of Ren when what I got was a compassionate view on intergenerational domestic violence. Thank you.

I think an alternative storyline that would have made this trilogy more heartbreaking would be if Stevie (the boyfriend) had turned his life around after the death of Violet and the birth of the twins. What if instead of the officer being named Richard, he’d been named Stevie? It would have been really tragic if he’d not only killed his son through the violence he’d created, though without knowledge, while his son (who took after him) had just killed his own sister (who took after violet) only a street away all while he was patrolling. I think it would have been the cherry on top to tie all of it together, eluding to the violence and tragedy that was this families tale.

My father was a violent man from a line of violent men. I remember my father telling me his nose had been broken 3 times, twice was by his dad. My father struggled to break the cycle but he did a good job. I have had to struggle to do as well and live up to his example. He taught me unconditional love. He taught me respect was earned and given not coerced or demanded. He taught me that sometimes we make self sacrifices for others for no other reason than we can and we care. I truly miss him. Sometimes breaking the cycle takes generations of effort as well.

There is a vid from Ren replaying the scene before Screech's attack on Jenny where this is played out. Ren is an absolute master at creating tapestries of art and music and theatre in one.

Jenny walked the streets, and had done 'at least a thousand times before'. Being optimistic she was just a hair under 15 - which would make her barely 12 when she first entered sex-work... at worst a year younger. Violet was fast tracked on the council housing list (rather than fostered), which at 16 implicates pregnancy as a possible cause... making Stevie not the father, maybe... and his jealously in the face of a pregnancy not his, and silence if not reasonable at least understandable... As for Babe and Patrick, both unavailable (Patrick is not at home, and Babe is home, but busy....) There is an implication that this is not entirely unrelated, in the wider 'tales' setting. Watch the 'trailer' for the series "Instagram Stories: Screech's Tale", for more context for the fictionalised Screech, and his friends... the first two were written in response to a police spokesperson's rather lame statement in the police involved shooting of a 14 year old murder suspect in the botched mugging and fatal stabbing of a young sex worker - Violet was added post-hoc and they were made twins as a recasting of the fictionalised characters in an orgy of Shakesperean Tragedy...

Thank you for your reaction to this trilogy. It truly is a heartbreaking story. Something I'm realizing now in my early thirties is that it's often only the "big traumas" that are talked about, whereas all the "small traumas" that people experience are left invalidated or pushed aside. I've finally decided to begin therapy for the first time to address an entire lifetime of little traumas that have left me broken, unseen, and unheard. This is why context is so so important because we can never judge anybody else until we've been in their shoes.

What you say really hits home with me. I grew up knowing violence, nothing really extreme, but far more than a child should (I realised later). A simple childish action, mistake or even a presumed mistake/action led to threats or an actual assault on me. Anyway, I grew up to become violent myself. I hurt a lot of people. Some badly. It was always other males of a similar age or older, and some were willing participants, others were not. Some of my friends committed murder, whilst another friend was murdered themself. Many more died early from drugs or car accidents. Eventually my behaviour took me to prison (a few times), but I managed to turn things around. I went to university, got a career, married and had 4 children. I promised myself I’d break that cycle, as violence begets violence, and I have never once been that way with my children and our relationship is amazing. I simply don’t understand how people hurt children. However, it’s still a daily job keeping that lid closed on how I react to others outside my family when ‘tested’. The potential to do these things never truly goes away I guess, but it becomes more manageable. Maybe age helps.

I'm so happy you listened to us. I knew you would get the twist at the end. This tale is so disturbing some don't realize what just happened. I had to watch it twice because I got it in my head that "Two zero zero five" was a phone number because it resembled an old landline number. A friend of mine whose partner tried to kill her 20 years ago zoned out during Violet's Tale and she didn't get it at first. Thank you for doing this reaction.

I was abused (beaten) as a child. I am now 53 i have had my personal demons. But I chose a long time ago I vowed not to be what I was shown. I want to be better. Now at 53 I have great relationships and care for others. and am at the best place. Not all victims stay victims or choose to make others victims. I am writing this not to brag but to show there is hope and not everyone abused repeats the violence. No matter your past it is still your decision what the future is

Ask yourself why Jenny, a girl of 14 was walking the streets late at night , a street she walked a thousand times before and why screech thought she was a lady rather than a young girl. Ren based this on a story head read about a young sex worker killed by a young teen. The police reported at the time it was “such a shame”. As you said Jenny was quiet like her mother, screech violent like his father. Ren also knows of people who have experienced domestic violence and wanted to shine a light on it as only Ren can. Also a RENeverse rumour has it the reason Patrick was not home at number 54 was because he was with screeches girlfriend and that's why she was busy !
