I am incredibly impressed by Ren's storytelling and musicality, and it shows in this collaboration with Chinchilla exponentially. So what better way to enjoy a collab than with one of my own! This is the second time we filmed this with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore and Chris Liepe, as the first time a couple months ago had a corrupted file. So we're listening to it for the second time, and giving our pearls of wisdom of this amazing piece!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Ren & Chinchilla performing "Chalk Outlines" for the second time.

Ren is, to me, a voice for those of us with chronic, often debilitating, physical and mental health issues. This song really resonates, and I thought that Chinchilla's vocals added a beautiful dimension. Thank you, Elizabeth, Will, and Chris, for your insights and thoughts.

Ren is a genius and one of the greatest artists of the modern era. Also, I just want to draw attention how cool it is the Will and Elizabeth are literally at the forefront of scientific research behind harsh vocals. 18:35... You hit on something that I have admired about his work. Ren's ability to 'push' a feeling through his voice is what first hit me. I'm guessing he's spent a lot of time alone training this to perfect it. His use of silence, transition from song to rap (or reverse) is unlike any other I've experienced and usually it's at a moment of masterful increase or change of emotions.

From my perspective as a person on disability for the past 19yrs for depression and anxiety, the lyric "great big smile" - 100% bitter. He's expressing the anger and the resentment and the despair that he's expected to somehow perform "being ok" in interactions (often enough, even your therapists suggest that you "fake it until you make it" in terms of trying to maintain your social relationships). There's a sense that even with people who are supposed to love you and support you it's not acceptable to be yourself, when you're not okay; they want you to smile and pretend to be ok because it's uncomfortable and inconvenient and to be with someone who you can't fix, who won't be "fixed" the next time you see them or the time after that or the time after that.

Absolutely right , I get so tired of making everyone around me feel ok about me not being ok at all. It’s many years since I have been ok for more than minutes at a time and I support those around me. It isn’t fair for me share my pain, but I would so love to have someone just acknowledge for once , I am not ok and let me be ok. Actually I don’t think I could let them ackowlege I am not ok it might break me.

At about 28:45 when Chris points out that it's like Ren's voice is leading Chinchilla's voice it made me think about how my late wife would've likely seen it. "Their voices are dancing." I believe she would've said something like that. She would've immediately seen a deeper connection between those two. She was a truly special lady who was able to find the soul in everything. God broke the mold when he made her. She was truly special.

31:50 that buzz is actual resonance, means you're both on same pitch and is is actually adding to you're sound waves/ resonance in physics is an additive force, if you have a low c and a high c played same time the energy is added . happens with ocean waves as well. when a wave crashes into another wave their heights are actually added together while they pass through each other. this is a function of waves so so when you're singing together and on pitch those sound waves resonate increasing amplitude in both of you.

Ren is just so insanely amazing because very tiny little sound and kyric, matched with the guitat notes..its all telling a story, even his little ceack i feel is his emotions almost having a mental breakdown b4 trying again with a fake smile.. like he says. And he expands and outl8nes that fake smile part in his voice because his smile is just trying to push down his own emotions and put a sarcastic smile when hes truly suffering and his emotions conoletely MELD into one which is why his lyrics and kusic just hit that much different. Hes super authentic and he hits the soul.. and chinchillas voice truly conpliments it very well the way she comes in and then powerhits. Very cool

WILL REACTING TO REN, OH MY GOD, CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY!!!! Edit: I can SO relate to Chris' little emotional "outbursts" during some sections of the song, and just his child-like excitement, I've never seen anyone else react to great musical stuff like this, glad I'm not the only weirdo! 😅 I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE his passion for music. All of them bring something cool to the table, but I can't help but relate to Chris the most.

Great reaction, about 1/2 way thru you all hit on what makes REN epic, and that is all parts eventually leading to the storytelling. He’s a modern master at leading, gracefully at times, us all down the road he’s chosen. Love the channel and content, I’m not a singer or musician but I learn every time I tune in, which I love.

This is insane. Three of the top reactors, great in their main thing, singing and knowing what a good singer needs to do, get together and LOVE everything. How does this have to feel for Ren, watching this stuff? And Chinchilla? They deserve it, I don't have any knowledge of singing, yet I absolutely love what he does. But it has to be one of the most uplifting and dangerous (because them just being great and caring, feeling, putting everything in it makes it great and knowing you're great will make you lose that special delivery) things if you're one of those two. Watching this. Watching people who know their stuff just being blown away, even knowing what's coming.

This was a really interesting and cool video for me to watch. I love this song. It was fun to see how you guys kinda piggybacked off of each other to talk about what you were hearing in the song. Thanks for sharing this video with us. May y'all have a good one. Have fun take care I'm off to go check out that video now.

Amazing that you 3 can sit and analyze a couple of new, independent, and not widely known artists! How many artists that are backed by industry would you do this for? Them going live and one take is genius! It wouldn't be talked about as much if it was studio. It wouldn't be special if the video was edited. They invite you in to experience their art❤ Beautiful

Just loved watching all of you geek out the way I do at home, only with so much more coherence. I'm new to your friends but they were both so great. I hope we see them often. Ren and Chinchilla are completely unprecedented IMO. Had my 75 y/o mom listen to this song and she cried. As for me -- a person with mental health issues -- this song gutted me in the best way. I'm so obsessed with Ren''s talent and yet it felt like Chinchilla just stole the light here. Not a bad thing at all. The chemistry between these two artists just floors me. I cannot stop playing this song. The fact that it isn't everywhere (at least in the US) is a testament to how far from our social priorities we've gotten. I'm looking at you, CNN. Not sure if you've done anything from The Big Push yet (a band Ren play(ed?)s in) but everything they do is amazing as well. So glad I finally have brilliant artists to listen to again, as most of my beloved music from the past has become a major trigger for me.💔

Something a lot of people don’t mention is how tallented Ren is at using a location as an instrument/effect. I am near positive that comes from his busking days singing outside or in tunnels where you really can play with how you sound. Violet is a great example when he sings up the spiral stairwell. Here he really digs into that loud reverb for power and softens to let it bounce around like a haunting echo.

The course you put together is extraordinary. So much information and camaraderie and you guys are so engaging and having so much fun with it and that's really what makes it fun. It's like if the instructors are having fun and giving themselves permission to look and sound ridiculous then the students feel way more comfortable doing so.

Others have already rightly suggested checking out Ren and Chinchilla on How To Be Me (live). I'd like to add to that checking out Ren and Sam Tompkins singing together on Blind Eyed, or one of their busking medleys like Earned It / Mans World / Falling, or Improvising around Stevie Wonder.

I've had this song (and this version of it, specifically) on loop in my head for days and hearing 3 music nerds explain all the nuances that I can hear but can't articulate or pinpoint is so satisfying and almost a relief, to understand why the song is so incredible.

I couldn't help but notice at 33:30 when Chris talks about Ren "tripping up a bit" and Chinchilla being like, "I got this" ... see the still frame captured in the video. It seems to express that perfectly! Nice synchronicity. :)

I love all 3 of y'all. I love the insight, the knowledge, the experience, also individual talent as vocalists. And I have no problem with pausing a decent amount... but y'all take it over the edge for me. I've tried so many times and I can't make it through an entire video. Maybe this just isn't for me, but I hate that it isn't because I really appreciate and respect your knowledge and insights. I wish y'all all the success in the world!! I have a great deal of respect for what you do. And for those that really enjoy the super, in depth(really deep), micro breakdowns I'm sure y'all are in heaven. I am just such a fan of Ren and especially thos song that I had to try again. ✌️❤️and respect to all 3 of y'all and your entire awesome community!!🫡
