Such a good dog River is. Amazing how mild she remained even in the moment of being cut and bleeding. Hope she heals up fast..👍👍 I hope karma catches up to the person who thought is was ok to leave behind their mess of busted glass.

Thanks for uploading this one, Wade. I hope River's recovery is swift, thorough and worry free. Since your last two videos, I've been curious about the trip when this happened. Broken glass is a ubiquitous bane for campers and hikers (and the critters whether domestic or wild!). The look on her face at the beginning of the video is priceless. Some folks think that dogs don't "smile" - River smiles with her entire face: her eyes, corners of her mouth, cheeks and ears all perk up with obvious eagerness! Beautiful dog! Side note: magnificent campsite, gear ... _and that meal_ ... oh wow!

You’re right Randy, dogs do smile, I’m sure of it! Thanks for all your support my friend and River is doing well! 👍😁☕️

With all that gear and no doggo first aid kit. Just a simple one with dog safe meds and doses (aspirin, benadryl, etc.), wound wash, gauze, antiseptic spray, polysporin type gel, vet wrap and tape, and those rubber booties. There are ways to close wounds too, depending but all of the years I have been hiking with my dogs and have had similar things happen. Just watch out for the gauze getting dried onto the wounds, I use something like bactigrass or adaptic to prevent that, but lots of polysporin or microcyn can help as well.

You’re right I could have been better prepared and a lesson was learned. I did have large square bandaids the size of her paw and gauze to wrap it up with. She was at the vets within 5 hrs for her surgery. I have since bought rolls of vet wrap (waterproof and breathable) to add to my kit along with Polysporin. I carry butterfly strips in my kit but they would not hold a paw pad and the bleeding stopped with pressure. Benadryl is part of my kit always. Thanks for the input.

All this and, if you hike in an area with porcupines and let your dog run off leash, a pair of needle nose pliers and researching up on how to properly remove quills in the field (don’t cut, grab at the base, pull straight out, hard!). Of course, if you can get your dog to a vet within 24 hours, it’s best to let the vet deal with the quills professionally.

I always have a Leatherman or two on me. A set of wire cutters should be carried in case of your dog getting caught in a snare as well.
@Woodswalker19657 ай бұрын
I agree the kindest way to deal with more than one or two quills would be at the vets under some sedation with pain meds and antibiotics.

Do you purchase the back strap from your butcher or from a pet store?
@Woodswalker19657 ай бұрын
I get the back strap from the same place I get my raw food for River. He has a variety of raw, healthy treats!
