I love him too, but his Bluray Sucks video was the dumbest thing he ever released. Pretty much eliminated any credibility he had with me and anyone who stumbles across his video. If he was smart, he'd delete it. I don't buy DVD unless I'm forced. I agree he's trying to be funny, but he sounds like noob from Battlefield Friends complaining about teh graphics on PC compared to console.

I just recently got back into collecting physical. There is a Bookoff near me that sells all DVDs for $1. From time to time they have Blu Ray for $1 each as well. I would love to go with BR every time, but the price is too good to pass up when DVDs are a buck each! I have about 80 of them so far. Some of these I purchased back in 2000-2003 for like $25!

That's what makes Blu-ray superior. I put the disc in to watch the movie, not look at the menus. I couldn't care less what the menu looks like, I just want a menu that loads quickly, responds quickly to my inputs, doesn't waste time with animations, lets me watch the movie as quickly as possible. Slow overly animated DVD menus that keep me from the movie for longer than they should suck, and I'm glad they're gone.

With physical media, you get to keep the movie forever. If a streaming service loses the rights to the movie, too bad. I only use streaming to watch movies in genres that I’m only mildly interested in. I also think if one has a physical media collection, they can pass their collection on to the next generation. I still collect on BluRay due to the price gap with 4K and my budget. I recently purchased The Batman on BluRay and was blown away by how much better the 1080p disc looked and sounded when compared with a 4K stream. I think one of the overlooked features of Blu ray discs that are an improvement over DVD was the correct frame rate resulting the correct pacing of a film. DVD's are 25 fps as opposed to 24 fps. Agreed 100%. Would also be cool to have the option to get 4k discs solo and not with the blu ray version anymore. Anyone like me with a 1,000+ Blu-rays feels like we're paying double when getting the 4k variant, since good chance is we already own the individual Blu-ray and don't have use for the additional disc. Seems like a handy excuse to charge $15 extra and end up with hundreds of doubles that you don't need.

Hugely agree. For a physical collector of even a fairly modest collection, 1080 Blu is likely to forever be the bulk of their discs. I only have a library of 300 & barely 20% of my collection has moved to 4K. If I bought everything in my BD collection on 4K that’s currently available, it still wouldn’t top about 25%. Most passionate collectors have a larger library than mine, & many far, far larger. 1080 Blu is always going to be the bulk of a collection - that alone (& there are other reasons) makes them important.

When the studios/networks went to video production for shows vs film, there is only an SD master. Granted it will look better on BluRay vs DVD but the improvement will not be that great. Shows from the early 70s, think All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Barney Miller, Threes Company, Doctor Who, etc. were all shot on SD 2" Quad master tapes. The cameras of the era were maybe 600/700 lines in resolution. Plus the problem of interlaced video is always present. The reason many shows can be released on HD is film masters.

I have many blu-ray disks because I don't want to pay for a streaming service to watch that movie only to have buy another streaming service when the movie leaves one service and goes to another. Also in my experience steaming services tend to degrade the image particularly in the somewhat shadowed areas of the frame. One instance of this in "Hunter Killer" at approximately 6:36 is a scene where the captain is standing with a lot of backlighting from the sky. It looked great on the blu-ray but streaming darkened the captain's face so much it was unacceptable. Also with blu-ray you can FF or Rev smoothly and at a sane speed. Extras about the movie are sometimes available on blu-ray. Not so with streaming. "Isle of Dogs" has interesting extras about how they made that movie. Without that you might believe the film was CGI but it was all - hand made and beautifully done!

I personally agree with James on the packaging, though. I own Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy, and it has those cursed sleeves. Granted i just put my fingers under the page of the movie im trying to remove and slide the disc out with my thumb, then grab the ring once it's exposed, but why are the sleeves necessary in the first place? My Mission: Impossible set pulled it off better. It's just a fatter blu ray case so all i need to do is press the circle and pull the disc. No problems and no chance of scratches. Meanwhile those BTTF discs already have very light scratches on the edge.

I actually inserted a few dvd's into my Ultra-HD Bluray player some months back and compared the films with the same ones I have either on Bluray or 4K-Ultra HD. Even *upscaled* the image looks compressed, dull and devoid of the dynamic contrast one has become used to. If you have a 65 inch OLED screen the limitations of dvd's is ruthlessly exposed. Nothing less than proper HD will do. And when like you said, when the quality of the *sound* is important anybody who has heard the uncompressed sound of Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio will grin after listening to stock Dolby Digital. The only dvd's I still buy are the cult classic horror films and great international cinema, and that's solely because I can't find them in a better format.

Good video and many great points. Although I do think the early days of blu ray were a bit rocky, as if companies had a hard time with the format in the beginning and it took them some practice to get them looking good. There have been so many titles in which the first blu ray didnt look that great but the second blu ray looked amazing - The Terminator, Total Recall, Robocop, even some modern ones like Gangs of New York. And for me it felt like the jump from VHS to dvd was bigger. Maybe the image didnt have that much higher of a resolution but it looked more pristine than it did on VHS. And when we got to blu ray some of that pristine look was gone when we started seeing grain. I remember the dvds that really knocked my socks off were Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and the 2004 Original Trilogy dvds. I also really liked the Robocop Criterion Collection dvd. And, call me crazy, but I think the first Robocop blu ray may actually have looked worse. Blu rays didnt really start knocking my socks off until they starting scanning the negatives in 4k. Also, OPPO players really enhanced the experience and made them better. People that didnt have them really missed out. They were very much worth the extra money.

The only argument I fully agreed with was when some companies don't port special features from DVDs to Blu-Rays, which happens sometimes. However, a lot of the rest of his arguments are him just not being tech savvy or are just his opinions that don't hold up much. It's good to see a video like this from someone who knows more of what they're talking about.

I’ll get a blu ray if it’s something new, but I’ll still collect DVDs due to the abundance and the fact they’re incredibly inexpensive. I do agree with your points though and for the person who is looking for the best quality on physical media, cool cases, and special features (though some DVDs have special features too) you really can’t beat blu ray. One thing I think you forgot to mention, maybe it’s a myth, is blu rays are more scratch resistant than DVDs which makes them more kid proof and long lasting.

Excellent content as usual but for me you missed two very important reasons why I love blu-ray discs. 1. Progressive scan 1080 video is superior to interlaced standard definition video on DVD....interlaced video sucks. 2. The 3D Blu-ray format is often the best way to see a movie. Hugo for example is definitely best viewed as intended in its full stereographic splendor...a truly magical movie experience.

Something that has hastened the demise of physical media is the consistent maintaining of past formats when the newest format debuts. Imagine if VHS stayed on well into DVD. There would be people who keep buying VHS. We got DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray on shelves technically now and fewer people buying because of streaming. No wonder stores are taking out the sections, it’s too much space otherwise.

The only complaint I have about DVD movies is the fact that they age from a few years to about a decade later causing them to malfunction by freezing in the middle of movies. I have a lot of DVD movies and few of them froze in the middle of movies after a few years or about a decade of buying them. I don't know if Blu-rays last longer, I have only a few of them. If they do, that's a huge plus and I plan to buy only Blu-ray movies from now on.

Great video, and I agree with almost everything! I really hope we don't see the end of physical media any time soon. The only two points I would disagree with are 1) I don't like the slim blu ray cases you have in the US. Here in Australia, we have the thicker cases and I just think the titles are clearer and more defined, and the cases feel less flimsy. The only think that sucks is that we rarely get slipcovers, but I know that isn't because of the case size, as the UK has the same size cases and often get slipcovers that we don't. I guess the distributors just think we don't deserve them down here! If I get a US blu ray without a slipcover, I always swap the case out to the bigger one. 2) I often find that the artwork used in the theatrical poster is better than what we get on blu rays. A couple of examples (there are more, but I don't want to bore you!) - the theatrical poster of RoboCop is one of my all-time favourites, but it wasn't until the recent Arrow steelbook release that I was able to get a copy with that art, all the rest had rather mediocre new art. The blu ray cover for Big Trouble in Little China here is awful and looks like it was put together on Photoshop in five minutes - I'd much rather have the original poster art! Other than that, awesome video!

I don’t know how old you are, but you seem to have missed some historical facts. The DVD format came out for cathodic TVs. In North America, they have a resolution of 640x480, because the video signal was brodcasted as 480 lines. At the time, I was experimenting with a video capture card on my Mac and dreaming about recording movies from TV and keeping them on CD. One day, I saw DVDs in a Future Shop and discovered that the product of my dream already exist! That night, I bought a DVD player, Scream. Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. After that, I bought 2 DVDs each week for a couple of years. Then the first LCD and Plasma TVs came in. It take another couple of years before HD cable hit the road. But DVDs look bad and pixelized on LCD and Plasma TVs. Two solutions emerged: HD DVD and Blu-ray. Blu-ray won the battle. So I start to buy Blu-ray movies, and I ‘m still doing it. Today, I have a 4K 75 inches TV connected to an eArc HDMI receiver. I don’t need 4K movies on it. Full HD looks fine on it.

New movie comes out, in order on shelf 4k for $30, bluray for $25, and dvd for $20. He buys the dvd. I asked him why and he said the dvds r easy to operate(?). My guess is his player either starts playing the dvd and bypasses the menu and blurays don't? And he said he doesn't like multiple formats on his shelves. So there u go: bluray menus too hard to navigate? And some people don't like the look of 2 formats on their shelves.

One other cool thing about Blu rays is that if you project one of them on a theater screen you get a nice, smooth looking picture it feels like you're just watching a regular film on theatrical screen (at least in 2K). DVDs on the other hand look pixelated when blown up on a big theater screen. (Getting to watch a lot of my favorite movies via Blu ray on a theater screen is on of the perks of my volunteer position!)

The other video is right about menus and extras, they really added to the experience of buying a DVD, the best being entertaining in their own right. One of the reasons I never bought nearly as many BD as I did DVDs was this downgrade in content. With 4K it got even worse, with most titles having static menus and little or no features. I guess the studios realised that they could make zero effort and we would buy their crap anyway. I recently got Speed on iTunes and on an AppleTV it comes with menus and a ton of extra features - actually a better experiance than the 4K disk. I think the US release is better, but the UK 4K disk cost 4x the price, has zero extras and doesn't even include a digital copy. In fact since Ultraviolet closed, digital codes are no longer included in any UK releases. Personally I don't care at all about fancy packaging, my disks live in a cupboard, but I do care about the on-disk content, that's why the only 4K disks I have bought are my genuine all-time favourites where I want the best quality version, and I have kept the old special edition DVDs or BDs where the extras are included. Streaming does me now for the 'watch once' movies.

I'm with you. I love Blu-ray. James Rolfe's views are not a criticism of the Blu-ray format itself as much as what some people have chosen to do with it or leave out of individual discs. Visually, it mops the floor with DVD and even HD streaming. Anything you can put on a DVD, you can put on a Blu-ray disc. Whether you choose to keep it in or leave it out is not a reflection on the format. The biggest problem I have had with the format is actually with the movie studios and their licensing and copy protection schemes. If Blu-ray drives had become more common on PCs and built into TVs like DVD drives were, the format would have been more widely accepted. But the corporations involved cut off their nose to spite their faces. Steve Jobs called the licensing around Blu-ray "a bag of hurt," and Blu-ray drives were never built into any Mac, at least not by Apple at the factory. Ultraviolet was so cumbersome to use that very few people even took advantage of the digital download that came with their Blu-ray discs. All in the name of copy protection, presumably. Now with 4K Blu-ray, you need an HDCP 2.2 receiver if you want your 4K Blu-ray player to work with your home theater. I am not inclined to get rid of my perfectly good A/V receiver just for HDCP 2.2. Maybe I will have to use it with optical and hook the player up directly to a TV, which means I would LOSE DTS-HD by upgrading to 4K unless I buy a new receiver.

I mostly buy used but quality Blu-Ray films on ebay at a great price, with very little to no damage to disk surface due to its anti- scratch more durable coating that you mentioned. Prices are awesome ranging from $4.00 AU to around $9.00 AU for non new release titles. So on a budget, there the "best bang for you buck" ! In terms of image & sound quality of any media to date. Not to mention a much bigger range of Movies compared to UHD (4K media) A Great Video, Thx 🍻🙏

DVDs look better because they're uncut, which means you can see the hands under the puppets and the strings holding up the fake planets. Also, on the cover of my Clash of the Greeks DVD, Persyphilis is riding his flying eagle-walrus over the swelling river of bile while holding the head of Queen of the Snake Druids as the Klunken monster is lunging toward the virgin princess of Rodanthe, who is chained to the entrance of the cave of hidden pleasures next to the Klunken's trophy skulls hanging like wind chimes, whereas the cover of Clash of the Greeks Bluray shows Persyphilis wearing his White Blouse of Elgyn while looking at the Klunken's attempted assault of the princess, which sadly seems to be occurring right beside whoever is taking his picture. Also my Species 2 Bluray is in a blue case which is all wrong because the cover is in red, which is sending me the subliminal message that i'm supposed to feel heightened emotions as well as calm, soothing emotions, which i'm used to by now but is still not the way to market a movie. DVD made every case black, which is a better strategy because no matter what you take away from a watching a movie, theres always the reminder that at the end of every great story comes the black, shapeless void of death, where any meaning will be swallowed into a space where there is no time or matter, but only mutations and infidelities and mysteries and mountains of forgotten black DVD cases.

1 advantage for blu-ray, or at least it was a function of the time DVD was popular in - I was going through my parent's DVD collection for a home media server and was reminded of the bad old days of DVDs that were widescreen or full screen editions. DVDs that were two sided and you had to read the tiny ring to find out which version was which side. I even found some DVDs that claimed to be widescreen but were the movie in its original aspect ratio shrunk down into a 4:3 file, so if you watch it on a widescreen television and don't adjust the zoom on your TV, you get black bars on all four sides. Yuck! With blu-ray everything seems to be standard, everyone had 16:9 TVs by then, so movies would just keep their original aspect ratio. No more mess like on DVDs.

The reason why he said bluray sucks regarding extra material: he referred to how innovative the companies were with their menus back in the dvd days (the big Seinfeld box is a great example) but in the bluray days, their main feature and only advantage is the image quality, so they often don't include anything extra at all and the menus are absolute bare minimum. Kill Bill comes to mind, where we have four buttons for subtitle languages and that's it. They might as well have skipped that screen since there are software menus for subtitles anyway. An example of great bluray extra material is the Band of Brothers/The Pacific boxset. Tons of interactive menus and above all, picture in picture vignettes of video interview commentary when something special happens in the series and they have a statement from the actual soldier about it. I believe video in video wasn't possible on DVD, but I may be wrong.

I have to agree with you about the special features on most Blu-ray discs. But for whatever odd reason, you'll occasionally run into a situation where the special features are better on the DVD. Take the movie Ronin for example. I opted to buy the two disc special edition DVD version, as the Blu-Ray itself was barebones. Not even a commentary. Which really sucks, because that's one of my favorite movies

Only time I buy 4K is if an older movie is released (such as The Godfather trilogy), other than that I usually go with blu ray for newer movies. Imo there is little to no difference in the format when a current movie is released. Plus the price for a blu ray wins me over as compared to 4K. Thank you for this video I really enjoyed it.
