Heat: Too cool for the Academy Awards? / Biggest Oscars snub ever?

Alex. Jay here , from Translucent. Heat is amazing. Also in my top 10. Not just ground breaking action but also hypnotic, takes time to explore depth in all characters (even the small supporting ones, which it was actually criticised for). I would never be so concerned about snubs at the Oscar’s though. They’ve always been fleeting depending on political zeitgeists at the time. The snubs go back to production codes pre 1950s and anything communist snubbed after then. Being snubbed by the Oscar’s is almost scene as a compliment amongst those acclaimed circles. Michael Mann was also victim of his own image - previously known to favour style over substance in his Miami vice days. Thief and Manhunter were done similarly (brilliant films!). Last of Mohicans was basically snubbed too. As your friend says as well, voting bored as de Niro and Pacino had done so much before. And in the 90s was the birth on new digital cinema … it was popular to go with ground breaking Babe and ground breaking war sequences in Brave Heart. A group of masculine men going at it with rifles in the streets just wasn’t appealing at that time.
