Building a set of fine woodworking chisels from scratch, in my workshop. This is a challenge I have wanted to take on for some time. To build a set of exquisite chisels using a design different than I have ever seen before.
This is episode 10, season 5, of The Newfoundland Hobbyist. This show is primarily produced for public television, and airs on Eastlink TV and Rogers within Canada.

Thanks Kyle for taking us through the process of making these chisels . It's really cool how you heat treat them . Take care and stay safe my friend !!

When you get the steel to critical heat it is actually not oriented molecularly where you want it. It has a certain amount of space around the molecules, when you quench you don’t ‘freeze’ it, but rather slam those molecules back together creating (ideally) it’s highest possible rockwell hardness… this is why tempering in necessary afterwards.

Lookin' very purty. One thing I will mention is on higher end chisels the side bevels come down to a pretty small edge. This is more for cutting dovetails and the like, so if you don't plan on doing that, probably not a big deal. I have been enjoying your channel, best of luck going forward.

It's the crystalline structure that is being modified. You can't view an alloy as molecular. It's actually a solution (like sugar water) where the atoms of the lesser ingredients are dissolved in the primary. Steel is iron with carbon dissolved in it. The shape, size, and composition of the crystals determine the material properties. A few large crystals are easier to move around and deform than many smaller crystals as the latter have a lot more surface area. During heating and cooling, atoms migrate (literally move around) in the material, so you'll end up with crystals of different makes. For example, in steel you can end up with some crystals with really high carbon content. These are carbide and provide a lot of the hardness and cutting ability. Those carbide crystals will be surrounded by others comprised of mostly iron, which is significantly softer. However, that softness allows the material to deform and provides the impact resistance, hence toughness. Quenching from high temperature quickly cools the steel, which tends to encourage precipitation of carbides and the formation of small crystals. That's why it's usually required to produce a sufficiently hard and tough material. However, it also takes things a little too far, making the material brittle, hence why tempering is required afterwards. By heating to a lower temperature, you mobilize the atoms and allow the crystals to grow in size and to redistribute the carbon slightly. You end up with a slightly softer, but significantly tougher material. For example, an untempered chisel might have an HRC of 66 but will shatter the moment you hit it with a hammer, while tempering will reduce to HRC 64-65 but enables it to survive for decades.

First time I check out the channel, loved the video, soooo subscribed. Why you use latex gloves while working on metal pieces? Not sarcasm.

Hay Kyle great video on heat treat. I think with 01 you can bring the steel to a non-magnetic state which is good for oil quench. Colors can be deceiving during different times of the day. Have you ever used a magnet to test the steel?

Hopefullly an expendable magnet. I know I've destroyed magnetic welding clamps the first time I used them by getting them too hot.

You might consider sending out a set of chisels to Wranglerstar on KZbin. That man appreciates a well made chisel and you could get a shout out if you are so inclined.

I understand that you're running a business, but having nearly a full minute intro, followed by a sponsored advertisement, then a double sponsored advertisement halfway through, adsense bar ads, and integrated video ads is excessive. I was interested in this and the process, but I can't say I'm willing to choke all that down over the course of several episodes. Your work is beautiful, no doubt but I just can't stand sitting through so much advertisement.

Meh..... This is a waste of tool steel . I'd be more impresses if you'd forge welded the tool steel to the back of a piece of mild steel first. A chisel's cutting edge is only on the backside. So long as the backside is made of tool steel, what the rest of the chisel's made of doesn't matter.
