Not a 1994 Black film about an autistic 16 yrs old, where he actuallytalked to a therapist that helped!!. Aaaannd he wasn't "overly" different. Clearly different, but not stupid or a super smart phenom. Though he was clearly very intelligent. I wish i had seen this as a kid, maybe it would've helped me. I'm definitely neurodivergent and Black and grew up in a house where we don't acknowledge those differences. I just....talked too much..😅😂❤.

The Inkwell is one of all time favorite movies that doesn’t get enough credit. It also shows Larenz Tate’s acting range from the Inwell vs Menace 2 Society. People always saying to be yourself or be you but when you’re different you get scrutinized, insulted, and feel like you don’t belong. Drew was a caring, smart, and clever individual that was misunderstood and had to create a doll to feel accepted which is so sad. Thanks to the therapist for being patient and understanding Drew and some how related to him. Great video ❤

If you look at Larenz Tate’s filmography, “Menace II Society,” “The Inkwell,” and “Dead Presidents” are chronologically next to each other. And his respective characters are the equivalent of Goldilocks’ experimentation with the three Bears’ beds: *O-Dog* (1993) - short-tempered thug. “This character is too hard.” *Drew Tate* (1994) - shy and sensitive. “This character is too soft.” *Anthony Curtis* (1995) - approachable and level-headed. “But the third character was just right.”

I feel like when we talk about Black movies that are either super underrated or doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, The Inkwell fits right along. The Inkwell came out during a time when most if not all Black movies were crime ridden or your typical drug movie (nothing wrong with that). The Inkwell is one of those movies that showcased a Black family and just Black people in general in Martha’s Vineyard. This is one of my favorite Larenz Tate performance. His role as Drew is severely underrated and it’s not talked about enough. Again, Larenz Tate had the range back in the day. Oh yeah, the ending will never not make me upset 🙃🙃. Heather basically statutory grapes Drew because Morris Chestnut cheated on her.

The inkwell is a movie that I absolutely love because it’s well written a lovely coming of age story of young black man who is not suave and slightly awkward and that depiction of black masculinity is seldom seen - the fact that Larenz Tate showed all this range he just did Menace to Society and turned around did this convincing portrayal of a young am was stellar. The character were well written - it showed a particular time and space - and we just did well written beautiful films like this. Thank you for your reviews - you are so good at what you do- so many of Black films don’t get reviewed or discussed and it’s needed. Shout out to Glen Thurman who was amazing - as the republican - it was a different world reunion for sure with him the actress that played the mom 🙏🏼and Jada . My son has autism too. He speaks in broken language (I can understand him ) and Carry's super Mario everywhere like Iago. He's 16 just like drew. He doesn't have "emotional" or behavioral problems at all..if anything he hasn't cried or been wild😅 since he was a toddler. This movie reminds me of what if my son was not autistic? What and who would he be like? Brenda is me as a mother, kind, concerned, caring, sympathetic and very nurturing. My son will never feel unloved just becuz he has relatives like (Spence and Frances) and has autism ..Kenny is me in my father role (I was raised militant so I carried the AFENI SHAKUR ..ANGELA DAVIS AND DR. BETTY SHABAZZ VIBE) but I gave it up after seeing what direction BLM was going in. Just another "trending movement with no bases of ever acquiring true justice and peace) I stand for my ppl!!! but I fight nobody else wars anymore...since my son dad abandoned him I have to be BOTH parents equally. We've never been better off lol. I love drew personality and was so happy he realized Lauren was a user and the uppity one who didn't see HIS value....he needed a queen like Heather! she was older and married but was genuinely sweet to drew and didn't judge him for being "awkward" or mis understood geek... he helped her realize she didn't have to settle for a slimey cheating husband like harold. Drew is so much like my jahki trameik 🎈💗

This was one of the most beautiful and underrated coming of age movies of all time! It’s right up there with “Summer of ‘42” , “Dirty Dancing”, and “Running on Empty” for me! The plot was great! There was conflict-but it wasn’t traumatic, it didn’t glorify black stereotypes, nor did it get stuck on trying to be the answer to white movies, only with black faces. The dialogue, the character development, conflict, and conflict resolution all felt organic and relatable as a black person watching, regardless of class or gender. The characters were diverse as far as class, skin complexions, and political beliefs. I love how they subtly showcased one of films first neurodivergent characters in a humanizing fashion that didn’t need to be dissected or diminished. They made his cognitive complexity more of a character trait that takes patience to understand, rather than a handicap. Drew was “normal” he just wasn’t typical personality or social-wise.

Whew!! I remember requesting this movie a while ago. So glad you did it 😊. Kenny and Spencer represents two (or more) different types of black people after slavery. While Kenny is more militant, pan-africanist, Spencer is more of the yt washed, republican supporting, self hating bigot. Drew was such a sweetheart, absolute sweetheart with some overload sensory issues. As far as Lauren, she should’ve also had the skeeza sticker. Dr. Wade was such an Angel to Drew and never judged him the way his family did. I always like Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, hope she’s doing good. Heather deserved better for sure but not the way she went about it. All of what you said was perfect and accurate per usual. Thank you for wonderful analysis 😊 Can’t wait for the next recap.

Thank you for bringing us this hidden gem 💎. I can relate to this movie because i was the socially awkward kid growing up. I love how Larenz Tate showed his acting range by playing a different character from O-Dogg. It’s full of black hollywood faves. The reason why this movie doesn’t get talked about as much is because Hollywood didn’t know how to promote movies that didn’t involve stereotypes among black actors & actresses. I think Drew had autism . Brenda’s mom favored Francis over her is because Francis married a political & Brenda married a Black Panther who was set in his ways & couldn’t connect with his son. Heather deserved better because Harold treated her like a nuisance. Fun Facts: Suzanne Douglas & Joe Morton were also in Tap, Larenz Tate & Phyllis Yvonne Stickney were also in The Women of Brewster Place, Duane Martin & Morris Chestnut were also on the forgotten short lived sitcom Out All Night, Vanessa Bell Calloway & Morris Chestnut were also in The Brothers, Vanessa Bell Calloway & Larenz Tate were also in Biker Boys, Larenz Tate & Jada Pinkett were also in Menace II Society & Girls Trip, Joe Morton & Morris Chestnut were also on the short lived series Our Kind Of People & Glynn Turman & Vanessa Bell Calloway were also in The Devil You May Know. Larenz Tate used his real last name in this movie & Power. The group performing at the dance was 90s r&b short lived group Jade.

I never saw this film before, but I love Larenz Tate's acting here. All those black people aged so well later in life and are still living (except Suzzane Douglas and Mary Alice R.I.P. to those ladies). Sadly, people like Drew are different and misunderstood from the people around him. The only person who understood him was the therapist, and I thank her for that. As for the wife, I understand her husband was unfaithful, but that does not justify sleeping with a 16-year-old boy. Jada's character was annoying as hell, but, sadly, she wasted Drew's time to reconcile with her ex. Those black republicans still exist to this day and do not appreciate the sacrifices that black people before them to get to where they are today. Finally, I like how this film highlights the socially awkward black boy for once and doesn't have stereotypes surrounding him. One more thing, the father should have kept punching him until the hospital came.

This was a really great review to a movie I barely remember but would like to revisit now! On the subject of why Heather used Drew like that, I agree it was wrong. I think at the time, for boys of that age, hooking up with an older woman was kind of looked upon as a fantasy, so I’m not sure if people were that weirded out by it then. I think looking upon it now with today’s lens we can see how problematic it is. It’s the same I think with other scenes or things said in movies that people barely batted an eyelash at but now people can see weren’t politically/ ethically correct in today’s age.
@maximusprime34599 ай бұрын
I didnt care too much for The Inkwell. Although it was great to have a black coming of age film that didnt have an urban backdrop. I think this was a case of throwing way too many themes in the pot when a straight forward story would've been better. Theres the political/class stuff within the family, Drew's awkwardness and mental illness, the coming of age stuff...its just too much. It also didnt help that when it was advertised. I remember back in the day, the trailers made it look like a straight forward comedy. After me and my friends saw it in the theater, we dug it but were completely in "What was dat?!" territory.

I remember when this movie came out (I was about 12 or 13) and so many people dissed it: friends of mine, folks in the media, etc. Fast forward about 2 or 3 yrs. later, "The Inkwell" came on HBO or Cinemax late one night, and I decided to check it out for myself. I wound up enjoying the film immensely, and to this day, I have no idea why it received so much flack. I mean, it wasn't perfect, but it was still a heartwarming coming-of-age movie. The only part I didn't like was the whole sex-with-a-minor thing. Also, I wish that when Brenda's mother finally told her that she loved her (which was out of left field, TBH) that Brenda said it back. Other than that, I liked the movie. BTW, I liked Jr.'s character simply for the mere fact that he was one of the few people that truly enjoyed Drew's company and wanted to include him in everything.

Even though Lauren was not Drew’s wife, I sympathized with him more-so than Heather. Maybe it's because of his naive, innocent disposition stemming from his supposed autism, whereas Heather had no signs of mental illness. Lauren took advantage of Drew's kindness, but Harold was just a cheating slimeball whose actions had nothing to do with Heather's setbacks. She could easily get hitched the next day, but if Drew hadn't smashed, his session with the psychologist at the end of the movie would be for a different reason. On top of that, Heather didn't directly see Harold with another lover, as opposed to Drew. The proof hurts more than the hints.

I've always loved A.J. Johnson's voice, and that she was so beautiful. But when she cried after she realized how good of a kid he was for rigging her husband's car. It didn't even seem like acting. There was a lot of pain from a bad man...and genuine appreciation for a real man all in one moment. Broke me. Not as much as him seeing Jada getting it in through the window.
