I've been building my dream home and homestead from scratch with very little experience and this year we're hoping to live in our home and using our in floor heating and our wood boiler to heat our 1300 square foot home in Canada!
Since I started this journey I've loved dropping trees and I'm grateful to be able to heat our home with our Heat Masters wood boiler. We have so many cords to split I honestly have no clue how much I need. I also test out the difference between a wood splitter and hand splitting!

Always work smarter, not harder. With two of you pulling get that splitter as close to your stacking pile as possible. move that wood as few times as you can makes half the work. Took me 10 years of splitting by hand to finally buy a splitter, a life changer. been heating with wood for 50 years.

The only problem is that when you have a lot of staff to do, like A LOT, you might be really tired to even think about how to do something easier because it had to be done yesterday. Probably a matter of experience.

You work harder than most people I know. Just a thought for future…..you will need a storage place for your firewood. Friends have built them out of pallets that they got for free, the only thing they had to buy was lumber to hold them all together and metal for the roof. I’m sure there must be videos on Facebook to give you some ideas. Keep up the GREAT WORK….👍👍

I echo comments made by others here. I too split wood by hand as well but a log splitter was a game changer. A cord in 15 minutes. We set a fire to clean up rubbish. As the fire reduced we wrapped some puds in tin foil and cooked them on the hot coals. So fun. Have you done this? Love your channel so much. Cheers from New Zealand

did you know, saw chain teeth are made from hardened annealed steel, Stihl chains a bit harder, Oregon chains a bit softer. But common to them all is that if you file to quickly, you will harden the steel surface. It is called deformation hardening. And it dulls your file. So your files will last the longest, if you do fairly slow strokes. You will sense when it bites and when it doesn't. Btw I am impressed with your saw handling and your efficiency. Thanks for sharing. And be safe.

Boats just have one comment on bucking logs. After you get about half way through the log. Raise your saw up and let it act as a pendulum. Just make sure the tip of the blade is above the dirt. With practice you can cut to the bark on the bottom and it leaves very little to cut on the back side. You are one tough couple. You should both be proud. Later

A big skid steer with tracks might be good for you. It could move the big logs with a grapple. You could move snow with a blade or blower with it. And some people put wood splitters on them to 1/4 big rounds. I know I’m going to make a splitter for mine 30-40” big rounds are far too heavy to move by hand to a splitter even.

a trick for attempting to back up a splitter, move the splitter wedge close to the backing plate then put a straight piece of wood upright so it can be seen when the tailgate is up in position between the wedge and back plate to hold it in place, have used a 2x4 and 2x6. you now know where the end of the splitter is, be careful backing up 'slowly', have used this method for years behind my truck 😉

Wood cutting tip. When big logs are together roll one up onto two, in the v between the two logs. That way when you cut down you cut into wood and not dirt. It is faster too you can just zip down the log no moving logs. Thought it may help. Also let wet wood sit a few weeks before splitting, they will be lighter and split easier too.

Keep up the good work, stay safe 👍☀️❤️☀️👍.

I’ve got 5-1/2 acres of timber and am always pulling brush and falling trees for my mill. I picked a corner of the property and pile all the brush and limbs there. Critters love it and it slowly composts. It’s probably 30’ x 20’ x 12’ high right now but will shrink to half that size in a year. You like the wild life and it will give them a home. Don’t haul brush to the dump. 😏 if you come up with a 20” slab of wood 12” thick for a chopping block it’s easier because the block you are splitting will be lower. Just cut the top off a big stump. They last longer. Splitting wood is a great workout. You can split wood faster than a hydraulic splitter. You’re doing it right. 😊

Biata, first, very nice work falling that big pine stub. In my experience usually those are the worst to fall because with the top gone you no longer have the weight of the top and also the lean to aid in falling. So then you have to rely primarily on wedging to get them to tip over. You did that perfectly in my opinion. Second, you also did great at bucking the bigger logs on the ground using your cant hook. Yes yes when those logs have dirt on and around them try and roll them around as much as you can. You will save yourself a lot money on bars and chains in the future. And last, you and Cam kicked butt on that pile of wood at your place. When you get the rest of those big Hemlock bucked you are going to have another big batch to split. Hopefully to can borrow your friend's splitter again for those.
@SimpleLivingwithBiata

Amazing. I don't think the average person your age would have the stick-to-it-ness needed to buckle down and finish that grueling job. They would quit the first chance they got. That said, you gotta plan for down the road as you are aware and make your wood operation much more user friendly. Maybe a tree service company can deliver trees to your property free (not sure that's a thing up there) or else you could buy trailers of logs from cutters who would put them in the perfect place so you don't have to move the wood so much and so far. But that's down the road. I'm exhausted watching you and need to get to bed! Keep rocking, girl!

Good morning man another awesome video and day. Might easier on your saw if you just some extra chains n a bar. Set aside a day or afternoon sharping your chains n get the saw ready for work, also dressing your bar of any signs of wear. Filing down any barbs ,make sure your bar is square and take some grease n pack in the socket. I know Stihl bars can't be re grease but they can be. Just pack in grease with the push tool n work it in until socket spins smoothly. The reason why I am telling you to grab another bar is you swap it out with the one you're using when it gets hot. Grease breaks down when hot putting wear on your socket. And extra chains just makes it faster than sitting n filing. Also might hit something make it dull. Just some tips if ya want to try. Especially when tackling a whole tree better to have back up than to to be up shitts creek Have a great day.

I have a question and your answer will likely make sense after we hear it, but since you had the truck there why did you not back the splitter up where you wanted it earlier in the day with the truck? I know some of that wood was not too difficult to split by hand but you only have so much energy to spend on this project so why not go the easier way so you have energy to get more done throughout the day? At the end of the video I can see you got lots done anyway!
@SimpleLivingwithBiata
@SimpleLivingwithBiata 3 ай бұрын
I was contemplating backing it up but there’s not a lot of room on the hill there and then to get it to the big hemlocks on that hill it would’ve been really rough terrain. I think we’ll get an ATV to tow a splitter around the property to collect trees

What a weekend of cutting wood. Am so jealous of all that wood. We have a fireplace insert, that has a blower. You have become very proficient at using your chainsaw. I don't remember what size your chainsaw is. Have you thought about getting a bigger one for those larger trees?

Wow. Splitting in July. Uh, bleh. I have never split Poplar, but I heard that . I discovered (catskills NY) that hemlock bark is decent firestarter. It also cures leather. Your face is brighter, like , more, yay woo-hoo. probably due to that expensive -ass Tibetan green mix drink. So she wails for 4 hours, takes an insane ice bath, and then hubby FINALLY comes home and it's like "Oh honey I missed you so much, let's split even more !" I do like those wood boilers . Probably safer too. I will probably get that 32" Fiskars . it seems to get relative raves. I predict this video will get heavy reach. I vote one of your best, have seen most of them.

Saw looks sharp--like a hot knife through butter. Good job. What brand cant hook do you have? I have a timber tuff (kinda cheap) that doesn't grab the logs very well, especially if they are a little bigger in diameter.BTW, the hummingbird clip was cool.

Biata a few suggestions. One don't use racket straps as a pull rope unless as a last resort. You will ruin the ratchet. I suggest that you get a 20 foot chain 3/8 or bigger size. Put it around the end of the log and hook it then hook it around the tow ball of your truck. Make sure no one is around the chain just in case it breaks. Put your truck in 4 wheel drive low range and take the slack out. Once you stop moving dont stop until you have to. The tree your friends gave you pull it out and cut it in the road. My dad has skidded thousands of full trees out getting wood. You should easily get those logs piled up out with your truck. I loved your video and seeing your beautiful smile. Happy Canada day and a happy week. Love you awesome lady
