Good morning Mikey I'm Joseph Diaz and that problem of the transformer happen to me when I was replacing a light switch removing the Neutral from the box it was sharing with a 12/3 and the line go to 240 volts and burned the transformer. now the Electric Code of running power line you have to used 12/2 and "no sharing neutral".

A bit unrelated but, I wish there were suppliers for the diaphragm for various water boiler auto water feed devices. Those devices are insanely expensive, but when they fail in a way that causes the boiler to flood the part that fails, is the diaphragm, and with that single tiny part that is removable after removing the solenoid.

probably the sparky fed it 240v and smoked it or they had the panel and service entrance replaced due to open neutral, maybe storm damage or other failure. with an open neutral the voltage can jump around from zero to 240V, depending on other loads inside the building. it would burn out many devices/bulbs also.

Mike this service call would had annoyed me a little because of the miscommunication about the water heater or boiler that needed attention. Then the door panel was blocking access. What If the issue was the gas valve or thermocouple? Then you have to get permission right there to remove that doorway on the spot. You got lucky it was the transformer. Honestly would recommend that you got permission to open up that door however way on the spot for followup service.
