One thing my dad showed me many years ago was with open vents, was to get a pint pot half full of water and put it on the vent. You could see if it was sucking in or over pumping. We did a lot of solid fuel and we all know the issues with the "British Gas" air separators blocking up! Great content as always mate, have a good week

Good tip that, I don't like air seps that much as like you say they always block, I normally just use two tees within 150mm of each other, thanks for watching Gary 👍
@garydulson901810 ай бұрын
@PlumbLikeTom Yep I always do the same, cut air separators out. 2 Ts 6" apart. Question I never really had any issues with the old Pegler ones, don't know if you've come across them? Cheers mate

Nice one Tom On most pumps it tells you minimum head required and that looked like you was on less than minimum just check to save your self only way is to raise header tank Regards Lawrence Peters

Combined feed and vent all day long for those situations mate. I’d bin that air separator and tilt the 3 port on its side so you can put an AAV just after the pump on a tee on the vertical and then into the 3 port from the branch. Saves loads of agg with air issues and fills up beautifully as well

I hate air seps to be honest, they cause more issues than they try to solve, thanks for watching mate

Hi Tom, another interesting film there thank you, I hope the pumping over the vent problem was sorted out. Yes it’s amazing how many so called installers don’t properly seal the flue pipe. Have a great week and as always take care Tom. 👍👍👍
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support as always Chris, I assume it must be fixed as I haven't been back, the system was all nice and quiet when I left with no signs why it should pump over, flues not sealed is all too common 👍

speed 3 would defo be to high for such a low lever expansion vent . and if it was nocked back to even 2 but id prefer 1 .even and iknow it would take a little longer to heat but speed 3 defo high . and rise that expansion by bringint it into the apex even making it longer into the highest part of the apex,, i have seen the expansion brought through a slate roof straight up into the outside .lol and returned and flashed with lead to cure this lol . .needs must mate l. keep up the good work Tom . great hard worker and Jacob good y felllow they are harder to come by these days .. young fella dont like getting dirty hands these days .lol esp when clearing backed up soils . lol .
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support as always mate, I left the pump on speed 2 in the end, I find speed 3 helps to clear the air if the system is struggling to circulate after draining. I agree with you about the vent pipe, it probably could have been a bit higher but the system seemed to be working OK when I left. I did get a call back last Friday to this which I still need to get back to, the radiators are coming on with the hot water now. It was fine for a bit apparently so I guess the 3 port must be passing. There was a lot of rubbish in the system and I did recommend a flush

Tom, do you fit many vented systems any more? From the look of that system the feed tank seems quite low. Isn't there a minimum height that they are suposed to be above the pump & vent & feed location? I think its a much simpler system with a less complicated boiler. Provided the pipework is correct..

Nice jobs there Tom and teaching Jacob.👍👍 Did you recommend a system clean and then putting in an inhibitor. The dreaded rustvin the system. 😯😯
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
I did John but I don't think the customer will go for it, I showed them the water sample, it must have been pumping over a while, all I can do is fix what I can a recommend what I think would be best, thanks for watching as always

Could you do away with the air separator and pipe in a H shape , vent and fill in the top ?
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
That's what I normally do, I don't like air seps that much, as long as the vent and feed are within 150mm they should be fine, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
@deathstr0kexorn76510 ай бұрын
Was it pumping over all time or just when heating or water on by themselves? Had it where coil was restricted in cylinder so only pumps over on HW and also had it on microbore Restricting heating flow
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
A believe it was all the time, the header tank was constantly overflowing and the system was noisy, it could have been boiling a bit if the pump was weak or restricted, I didn't run it when I went as I didn't want things hot to work on, thanks for watching
@Craiggilhomephe10 ай бұрын
Have you never thought about testing the water in the system the corrosion is there for a reason. Iron levels,ph levels?
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
I do carry the test strips which I use when servicing boilers. This system had been pumping over for a while and the red colour is rust from the radiators which will have been corroding from the inside due to oxygenated water. Ideally it needs a full flush and then correct levels of inhibitor adding which I did quote for. Thanks for watching
@Craiggilhomephe10 ай бұрын
@@PlumbLikeTom test strips are ok but i use test pens they are a lot more accurate what I'm finding is there is a direct relation between the fill water and problems with the system later (with or without inhibitors) so flushing is not the answer in some cases treatment of the water to vdi2035 standard would always be my first option and accurate testing on the annual service.

What’s the minimum distance for a fuse board from gas meter please?
@PlumbLikeTom10 ай бұрын
150mm, the new gas meter shouldn't have really been fitted, there wasn't so much I could do about it other than advise the customer, the fuse board will need upgrading soon to metal so it will then need to moved to the correct clearance, thanks for watching
