Nice work. Question? I have a SSR170 for my boys that has been a sincere disappointment. Fuel pump problems, flooding, and constant starter nightmares I really like the metal cage and look but would like to seriously upgrade the power plant. Any advise on where to find information would be much appreciated. Be Well.
@robhe37213 жыл бұрын
It might not be the answer you are looking for but the true answer to your problem is get as far away from that SSR as possible. Sell it and cut your losses. You think you have problems now? You manage to increase power output and it will just fall apart 10x as fast. It’s a cheap Chinese RZR 170 clone with zero research and development behind its design. It’s also powered by the gy6 engine design the Chinese bought off Honda ages ago. To say they build the gy6 and all its components poorly is far too kind to them. I have plenty of personal experience working on Chinese gy6 platforms and long story short...none of it was good. Your best bet is to get into a mid or full size UTV from a reputable manufacturer. If you need something for very young kids the RZR 170 should be the go to. Is not perfect but has plenty of potential in stock form and much more when modified properly. Hope this helps.

Rob, I just purchased a 2015. Could you please provide a link to the shocks you used? I am reading all kinds of different issues with aftermarket shocks on these and if yours are proven to work, I will go with those. Would like to lift mine about 2" as well. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2014 RZR 900 XP and recently got my long travel kit from HCR Racing. It's in the works. Riding the 900 on these trails is mostly me standing on the brakes while stabbing the throttle here and there. Its the whole, "its more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow" thing. The other reason I wanted to build this 170 is I always get a good laugh hearing some parent talking about how their 10 or 12 year old has "outgrown this". This is just proof that a RZR 170 can be turned into a monster and house a full grown adult. I wanted to post this video to open a platform for anyone who wants to ask questions about how to keep their RZR 170 fun for their kids as they get older and bigger as I have found no one online doing many of these modifications such as cutting the seat rails and cutting out half of the seat foam to accommodate larger riders. Also fairly certain I am the first person to ever run Yamaha Blaster front shocks on one of these. Tried the Raptor 660 front shocks and all it did was make the 170 understeer and try to flip over. After saving the 3rd almost-roll-over in 10 minutes I scrapped the 660 shocks and swapped in the blaster shocks. The shock bodies are about 1/2" shorter than stock shifting the weight balance forward as well as creating negative camber up front, both being key to inducing more oversteer and turn in response, creating roll over resistance and faster lap times. So basically this build was done and posted not just for myself but for everyone who owns one of these toys, just to show what is possible and give people some ideas and options they may not be aware of.

All mods listed in the description. But as always, the best mod you can do to go faster is tune the nut that sits behind the steering wheel...for me that meant rally racing school.

@robhe37215 жыл бұрын
Engine RPM and MPH have not been modified. I have cut the seat rail sliders so the seat frame goes all the way back, touching the cage. Also i have removed more than half of the foam from the base and backrest to set the driver lower and farther back in the seat itself.

Rob moves just like I think it should stock from Polaris but unfortunately doesn’t! I’m looking at buying a RZR 170 EFI for my daughters the second quarter of 2019. When it comes time to upgrade it, what do you think are the best bang for your buck kids? The front shocks sounded like one of them for cornering, what about performance?
@robhe37215 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you want to get out of the 170. I would be happy to give you any information you would be interested in, just email me. It is too long to post here and my suspension tuning is a secret although I am willing to share it with those who are interested, just not posting it online.

Rob He...forgot to look there. What jetting and clutch weights did you end up using? That 170 would spank my son's.
@robhe37216 жыл бұрын
Clutch has a 1500 RPM spring and 14 gram weights, just looked back through my paperwork. This was just the preliminary jetting, this video was just after I finished the build and did the engine brake in. Im pretty sure there is some more power in there so when I re-tune and get it really dialed in I'll post some jet sizes and the needle position as well as elevation for everyone. So what mods have you done to your sons RZR?

That is quite the complement, thank you! I don’t think a race driver can get sweeter feedback than when someone thinks their driving is sped up on video! I can assure you it is not sped up at all. I don’t play those kind of games. I’m a professional builder that builds and tunes high performance vehicles and I am also a trained rally racing driver. You also clearly did not read the description. This is heavily modified machine making almost double the factory HP as well as running a secret suspension setup that has never been done before. Couple a highly tuned vehicle with a trained driver and this is what you get.

Seems silly to me. The Polaris RZR 170 and Ranger 150 are intended to be for children. By the time the child is ready to move up in performance, they are also ready to move up in size. Stuffing a adult into a little RZR 170 thats modified for improved performance is like trying to get more food into a baby spoon. Just use a adult spoon.
@robhe37214 жыл бұрын
First off that “big spoon” you reference is a RZR 570 that usually costs between $7,000-$10,000. The purpose of this was to show people how, and what is possible, to get as many years of service and enjoyment out of a machine that someone’s kids would have seemingly outgrown years ago. Most parents would be, and have been (in response to this build), thrilled to find a way to update a RZR 170 to effectively double its service life for the younger members of their family. There’s a huge gap between a Rzr 170 for young children and a Rzr 570 for full grown adults. This bridges the gap. And for those who can’t afford to buy their children a full size RZR this allows their older kids to still have an enjoyable exciting machine as opposed to nothing. Ask the parents if this is a good idea...ask the kids...see what they have to say. Second, “by the time a child is ready to move up in performance, they are also ready to move up in size”...is a blanket statement that is completely inaccurate. Children race UTV’s competitively. Then why are these 6 year olds driving heavily modified children’s UTV’s and not XP1000’s? The were ready and capable of more performance than a stock RZR 170, so why aren’t they in a “bigger machine”? It’s because a 6 year old can’t reach the pedals, see over the steering wheel, or stay in the seatbelt. Third, this is an example of how far one can take this. Some people might just want to modify the seat and seat sliders and that alone will buy their child a few more years of enjoyment for FREE. So sure a 30 year old man driving a hopped up RZR 170 may be a bit “silly” if you want to look at it like that, but you missed the point of the video and the build. And for the record I have two rzr 170’s. Mostly for friends who have kids and a few of my smaller female friends really enjoy those as well. For myself I have a RZR 900xp with HCR Racing long travel kit and a fleet of racecars...from 4 miatas all the way up to a 680 hp STI...cheers
