Thanks for the nice footage and very interesting comments on the heave to workout. Question : it seems that the genoa is totally furled, unlike the usual heave to manoeuvre. Can you confirm this is the ideal balance you found for your SM? All the best !

@ojov Yes, in that instance the genoa was fully furled. The boat was well balanced in that wind & sea state with just the full mizzen. TWS was around 25 knots & only 1m - 2m seas. There was a bit of current heading downwind. Different conditions might require a different configuration but with the ketch rig there are plenty of options. 👍

Thanks John but please don’t throw any petrol on the fire. 😁Dee still reckons we need to go faster than anyone heading in the same direction! As I reply to your message we are totally chilled & anchored in a giant “tropical fish tank” in a remote part of Indonesia which is just so far from our racing days. (Old habits die hard though don’t they. LOL)

@billhanna5455 Yeah it was a bit surprising that we needed no headsail at all in those conditions. Maybe the current had a bit to do with it. We needed the full mizzen sheeted in hard to keep the bow where it needed to be. Didn’t even look like going close to head to wind.

Good demo, guys. I was fascinated by how well she hove to with just the mizzen. I suspect that this might have something to do with so much windage on the hull from the mizzen forward, but I could be wrong. It's news to me, anyway. Something that I'd like to raise to those interested in this content is to be aware that speed through water is deceptive when hove too. Conventional paddle wheel/impellor driven logs (speedometers) only operate in a certain orientation relative to the water flowing over them. Obviously, they are positioned to detect the flow of water moving from bow to stern for the purpose of measuring speed through water when the vessel is being used as "normal". When hove too, movement to leeward does not register as speed through water and you get a false reading of zero knots. I'm far from being a proficient navigator of any sort and I am most certainly not an expert. Strictly armchair and bar, these days. This is just something that I noticed when hove too on the start finish line between races a number of years ago. We might have only being doing half a knot or a knot through the water, but the log was registering zero and the crash boat and the buoy were getting further and further away, and they were anchored! Hopefully that's a bit of food for thought. Thank you very much for the content. Once again, great as usual. All the best on your travels.

@davidbrayshaw3529. What a great comment David. You are absolutely right about the windage of the hull & rigging forward of the mizzen when hove to. With regard to the speed log, ours is also of the paddle wheel type thus showed zero on the STW but the GPS plotter still showed leeward SOG at over 1.5 knots, exacerbated by the current. We have seen a boat (on AIS) making leeway hove to at 3.5 knots in a 60 knot East Coast Low near Brisbane last year.

@@sailingjaygo Thanks for your reply. I'm now stuck in Central Victoria, not that I mind that, I live in a beautiful town. I truly miss sailing, but your last sentence reminds me that being land bound isn't all that bad!
