There's value in a great performing standard pressure round like the 147 HST from Federal in a small pistol. Hellcats and P365s are a handful for less experienced shooters. Load them with +P+ and some people might develop a flinch. But for those that can shoot it well the high pressure stuff is fun. Thank you for testing!

Did Tools already test the HST 147 standard pressure out of a micro 9 and they expanded well? Would have my doubts about that as this GoldDot test shows that you need to load 9x19 outside SAAMI to get enough speed out of a 3‘ for proper expansion.

The molecular bonding for the 147g GD is almost 35% "softer" if you will compared to their 115g & 124g offerings and these are done under the assumption of running the cartridges at normal or +p pressures. Once the cartridge is pushed well past the "normal" pressure range I would imagine every 5 to 10+fps will have noticeable differences in comparison.

I’d carry these in a heartbeat. Great performance! It should given it’s a premium round. A snappy 147 grain 9mm is a potent round that is probably enough for black bears and hogs. The only time I’ve ever had to protect myself from an animal was on my farm I had about a 150 maybe a little more hog charge me. I hit it with a 155 grain Winchester silver tip out of my 40 and it was a one and done. This underwood 9mm is in the same ballpark specs wise so I’d imagine it would do the job. Like always great video I appreciate the quality and variety of your content.

I wouldn't suggest feeding any polymer frame pistol a steady diet of ammo that hot. A steel frame would handle more rounds but I'd shoot just enough to stay proficient. Any really hot round in any pistol or revolver will be hard on the frame, slide, guide rod and springs,while a revolver will have more stress on the top strap and flame cutting at the forcing cone. I'm not sure if my little Ruger EC9S is +P rated but I Always carry 124 gr +P Federal HSTs. I also practice with real military 124 gr ammo,since they both have a listed velocity of 1200 fps. I'm not getting that from a 3.1" barrel but the HST always works in any caliber. I don't shoot or carry the micro9 most of the time anyways. Why would I want 8 rounds of 9×19 when I can carry 9 rounds of 45 acp? I'll carry my 4" aluminum frame 1911 45 as long as I'm able. It's not really comfortable carrying everything I do in my pockets plus the weight of the pistol and 2 spare mags, but I'd rather be a little uncomfortable and have almost anything I'll need on me than carry less and need something and not having it. I learned that lesson the hard way at 11:25 AM on January 1st 2004.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
That's why you carry something like this Canik with 15+1 and another 12 round mag in your pocket. Why would I carry 9 rounds of .45 acp when I can carry 28 rounds of a ballistically superior 9mm round?👍

Ya know that's crazy, it was just talked about in the last video with the Gold Dots in .38 Special not doing well. The projectiles are the same maybe a different weight but if they would just use a bit more powder to get them moving fast enough they almost always do well as seen in this vid. Maybe some of the other manufacturers should take some pointers from the few that are consistently getting it right. I guess with the amount of rounds that go out the door a few grains less at the end of the year saves a shit ton of money. That good name will only take you so far when everyone gets wise. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.

Underwood definitely deserves the accolades in the comments. I load my own ammunition and in most cases there’s tons of data for all the calibers I load except 460 Rowland. Underwood is one of three companies that sells 460 and because their rds chronograph almost exactly what they claim I buy different weights of the 460 to use as templates for my loads. I’ve pulled the bullets and weighed the powder, to my surprise their loads were considerably different than the existing data. After plagiarizing their ( underwood) lengths and charge my hand load results are much more in line with what I want.

According to FBI's mist recent tests, the only bullets that showed increased performance (penetration) with increased power, were non expanding monolithic solid copper, fluid transfer design. These show wound channels that appear to be a combination if FMJ penetration & expanded hollow point periphial tissue damage. I expect further design changes & additional testing will show non expanding monolithic copper fluid transfer bullets are equal or superior to expanding hollow points Even When The Hollow Point Has "Perfect" Expansion...

I am not a 9mm hater. I just prefer 10mm. When I do carry 9mm, it is my CZ SP-01. Obviously, I am a big guy, and I like carrying fullsize handguns. I have fullsize hands. I have a good belt and use a good holsters, and generally don't mind the weight. I do feel like carrying 40 oz of steel deserves a no bullshit round. This is exactly the type of round I think the CZ shines with. At the advertised velocity from a 5 inch barrel such as my CZ, this load has a momentum of 24 ft/lbs per sec, which is excellent for 9mm, though it falls considerably short of the ~35 ft/lbs per sec of my 200 gr 10mm loads. Combined with a sectional density of .167, a supersonic 147 gr bonded JHP is really next level performance from a 9mm. And the low bore axis combined with the weight of the SP-01 should soak up recoil nicely. I'd like to see how this Underwood load compares to the heavy loads loads from Grizzly Cartridge (147 gr +P JHP @1125 fps advertised) and Buffalo Bore (147 gr +P+ JHP @1175 fps advertised). Secondly, as others have noted, bullet performance is often dependent on very specific velocity thresholds. A small difference in velocity can have a big difference in bullet performance.

Didn't look like much difference in recoil considering the weight advantage with the Glock. I would pick the Canik & 2 magazines of that Underwood in a heartbeat. Good stuff!! 👍 🙏 Have a great Easter.

@@ToolsandTargets I was wondering if you could test the .223 73gr Hornady ELD-M Match in gel from a 16" or longer barrel? Nobody on YT has a review of the stuff in gel. I use the 53gr vmax from a 20" barrel but past 400yds the polymer tip melts and accuracy sucks. They do fantastic on deer and coyotes out to 300yds though. The heavier weight polymer tip I would think is good for extended range coyotes and close range hogs.

I usually carry an M&P 4.25" with 124 Gr +P Gold Dots from Georgia Arms and for a number of years, I'd carry 147 Gr +P during the cold months though I've been carrying the 124s year round for quite a while. I recently found that a local dealer carries Underwood so might get a few boxes of these +P+ 147s and give them a whirl.

+P+ in a micro9 is silly. Then add heavy for caliber on top? It will poke holes in ppl like most other bullets, but the added recoil energy just creates more problems than it can purport to solve in the micro equation. Full size pistols, a case can be made for practicality in some situations. This man's opinion.

@Jack Whaley tolerance is subjective, recoil energy is simply empirical. I and probably the majority of folks can shoot hotter loads just fine. I just don't believe they offer enough benefit for the task of a micro-9 CCW.
