Best video so far. You described and showed the load. There was road footage. There was no music. And we got to see you shift/drive. Kudos to you for not using the clutch. Thumbs up.

A;ways a beautiful rig nick. I love the inside the truck view as I know a lot of other people like that too. If you put a tripod in the center of the truck then we can see the shift, the dash and outside, makes for super viewing, but thanks for your effort here, was still pretty fun.

Nice vid, Nick... I enjoy seeing others explaining the in's and out's with the heavy-haul stuff. Extra chains never hurt my feelings, either, especially if someone pulls a stupid stunt in front of the truck when loaded so heavy. The challenges and variety are the only reason I came back out on the road after being away from long-haul driving for nearly 15 years, even though I still call the buddy I worked with in the ND/MT oil field and give him grief for talking me into coming back out. lol As for the shifting, Murphy's Law says that you will shift smoothly with nary the touch of a grinding gear until that moment that someone gets in the truck to ride with you or if you are shooting vid! After 24 years of driving, I still have those occasional days when I just have to shake my head at myself... lol I'll have to check out your other vids, so keep up the good work and let's keep our fingers crossed the rates continue to go back up, as well.

Welcome to the channel, and thanks for watching! I love hearing about the drivers who have "never grinded a gear" lol. I just get such a chuckle out of them. Also, nice 152 in your pic!
@johnniewelbornjr.89407 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd much rather be up in the rental 152 or 172 any time. No gears to grind (if you grind landing gears, there are more serious problems at hand lol)... Yep, I try not to ever make any cocky claims, for they usually come back to bite a person. {chuckle } :)

Used to haul them tracks some of them with the drive motors and shafts like to leen bad to that side had to go as far as to put wood under the motor to keep it up and not fall. I went on to hauling just the upper unit was a company driver for the largest privately owned crane company. I don't want to put there name on here. I have done everything I have ever wanted in life hauling that stuff was a bonus for me. I started with heavy equipment and went to doing other stuff and finished with heavy equipment that was where I belonged. I got hurt in 2011 and I don't work anymore but I do miss it. I love the challenge the bigger the better just a great thrill. Keep up the great work my friend.

Great angle in the cab and don't worry about grinding the gears. It happens to the best of us but their are time we driver will get the shifting from going up or down smoothly from point A to B. So we have have our days but its no joke paying to fix the transmission. That is a lot of money to fix I here. Hope all is good on your side of thing. keep your self well and all as well be safe on the road.

Thanks! It's very rare that I actually grind one. We all have those times where it's not quite perfectly matched yet, but that's just part of it.

We did pick this up in Manitowoc at the main facility there. This is one of the larger tracks you will see moved. The 18000 is at the top of Manitowoc's line of heavy lift cranes.

I was told that pre-selecting your gears ruins the synhronizers in the transmission. Could be wrong. Awesome channel!
@4thgradedropout9807 жыл бұрын
They say your not supposed to but I'm pretty sure most operators do. Just like you're not supposed to split in reverse.
@DanielPerryRally7 жыл бұрын
These transmissions don't have synchros as their too heavy for them. Not preselectling runs the risk of bending the forks though. I've had three trucks with that problem in our fleet in the past year.(New drivers) It actually tells you to preselect on the shift pattern too.
@awd4g63ix7 жыл бұрын
I've heard yes, I've heard no. It works for me and we've put a lot of heavy miles on this truck. Hasn't seemed to cause any problems.
@KnightKrawler577 жыл бұрын
Jordan Hoffman If you read the operators manual for the 13 and 18 speed it tells you to always preselect, who reads the manuals right!

Sorry to ask.. I didn't get that hole clutch thing? only using it on start up. how does that work with a stick? :)
@awd4g63ix7 жыл бұрын
It's called "floating" gears. There's probably a million videos on KZbin that will give you a good visual explanation on it.
@weeklydoseofgaming67 жыл бұрын
What is the preselect, and why in the beginning did you say this is the only gear that we will use the clutch on?
@kw900lkevin7 жыл бұрын
because just like a car you use clutch to start, the transmission is fully synchronized so do not need to use clutch to change gears, then pre select is placing the high/low range side and/or gear split controls of Transmission before you actually shift so as you move the stick or release the throttle it shift's/changes almost instantly as you change the gear/range

can u do a video on how much permits and escorts cost?
@awd4g63ix7 жыл бұрын
Permits vary in every state because every state has different per ton mile rates. So, if I made a video about one trip, it'd be different the next time. Escorts cost on average $1.50/mile, $65 for overnights, and then there are different rates for mini runs (less than 200 miles) and day rates, where you'll need an escort for a full day, but won't be traveling far.
@usdpaulp7 жыл бұрын
Nick Mordaunt Do escorts only charge you for the miles they provide the escort or is it for both directions? Does a police escort cost about the same? is there is certain weight or dimension where you see a huge jump in the permit costs?
@awd4g63ix7 жыл бұрын
As a general rule of thumb you can say that your permits greatly jump over 120,000lbs gross, or what's considered a Super Load. Pilot cars are paid for the milage they escort you on. Unless you come up with an agreement to get a specific car to come out to you and you agree to pay deadhead. Normally, there is one available near you, so its unnecessary unless you have a preference. Police escorts are very different than pilot cars. They are charged by an hourly rate, $60-80/hr depending on the state, most have a 4 hour minimum, and they're paid round trip...from the time they leave their homes until the time they're mission complete with you.

@johnniewelbornjr.89407 жыл бұрын
I agree, for it all boils down to finesse in many cases. The only place I've ever truly felt the need for an 18 was while driving in the Bakken oil field in places like the badlands, mostly off-road. I came back out on the road to do heavy-haul in June 2016 and have never felt the need for more than the 13-speed with the C15 Cat in the current truck.

oilfieldforlife Ty because it is not a true heavy haul truck it is a normal freight hauling truck with a extra added axle on the back,he don't have a heavy front end either but he said the big front tires are just for looks, many things he does are for looks and attention, the shirt and tie for one as well as him running beacon lights when not required to by permit,appears he has issues with wanting attention

@awd4g63ix7 жыл бұрын
13 does us just fine. If we were loading and grossing upwards of 160k gross regularly, we'd probably switch to the 18, but for the weight range that we do, the 13 works really well for us.
