Yeah I agree, some of the most talented musicians in the world play heavy rock/metal, and it certainly takes a LOT of talent. I don't know if cash himself was a big fan of heavy metal, but he did go to several concerts of Iron Maiden and Metallica, and I also once read that he went to a Black Sabbath concert, and described it as "The best concert he had ever been to".

I still wish I knew the story behind this song. I operate a D11 caterpillar and love this song. And it's incredibly accurate.

Knowing Guy Clark, he drove one and thought that unique powerful feeling was deserving of a song. He was the very best at channeling those weird specific feelings into songs a listener could understand.

But that's not what he meant by this song! I can,t believe you don't get it. He's talking about his big machine, his caterpillar, that is heavy metal to him, not some kind of music!

I find it funny that that the bass line is almost the same as Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in The Wall."

Why do heavy metal fans take offence? This is not an anti heavy metal song.

This song isn't against heavy metal music. It's about how the term "heavy metal" means something different. Actually has nothing to do with music. Johnny actually liked some metal. Liked rock n roll. Outlaw country singers liked rock music and country

@RADIOACTIVEBUNY Duane Eddy and Chet Atkins don't need distortion boxes to cover up their mistakes.Cash always played acoustic rhythm guitar,not lead.
@RADIOACTIVEBUNY13 жыл бұрын
@JohnLeePedimore Chet's good, but if you listened to these artists play clean, you'd find that the distortion is not for covering mistakes.

I bet most of heavy metal bands love Johnny's music but I think he mentions an age difference more than looking Metal as a minor genre

Is this concert the one which is avialable on DVD " Live from Austin, TX"? Because this song and some others like "Wonderful time up there" and "The Fourth Man" are not on the track list. But he did them in this concert. Is there any DVD, where the complete concert is on? Sorry for my English, I'm from Germany. ;-)

@JohnLeePedimore /watch?v=zHaEAm-zmSY&feature=related They're really different styles, but I just dislike the fact that people automatically assume that metal takes no talent. This guy has played in metal bands, and still does metal, but he can also do clean stuff, too. I've gone to metal concerts where they play clean, and there's no mistakes. Only the inexperienced use distortion as a means to cover up mistakes. These guys use it for sake of feel and aggressiveness.

People, this song is about a bulldozer! It's a pun! It doesn't mean "heavy metal is not rock'n'roll"! It means "to the driver of this bulldozer, 'heavy metal' means heavy machinery, not a style of music"!

@TheLegendJohnnyCash /watch?v=bjb2IwpyHng Sorry, but Johnny Cash, while good, can't hold a candle in guitar playing to any of these guys, and though the vocals are different styles, I'd say it takes far more talent to cover the range they do in these bands than it does for him to do what he does. I respect Johnny and his legacy, but Metal is, in reality, the pinnacle of musical excellence. I don't know why I even bothered writing this, but we metalheads are weird like that.
