With your securement: Don’t hook to flat metal with the hooks, wrap around the anchor points. Run your chains to the anchor point and put the binder in the chain to pull like 4 links away from the anchor point. You should have a piece of carpet between the x chain so no friction.

I agree with this comment. I always try and make sure I have no twist in my chains so the load exerted on the chain is not in more than one direction.

So you are one of those people who are leaving trash all over the country that I have to dodge or end up running over and about crashing because you don't see it in time to dodge it while you're in traffic, as that's what happens when you put pieces of carpet in between your crossed chains they get cut in half and fall out or just vibrate out, but either way you create a hazard to me and my loved ones, and I will inform the DOT any time I see that, the friction between the crossed chains causes minimal wear to the chains and I have helped move oil rigs thousands of times and miles! Remember that you are not the only person or group of people who make a living using the roads who also use them for general transportation and recreation!

Things sure have changed, I started out in a chevy with a three eighteen Detroit and when I had a big load you would come to the top at twenty-five or so. Then came the real fun going down the other side with NO jake and only brakes on the tandems and trailer.

Atleast you had a 318. I started out in an International Cabover 36" sleeper 6-71 Detroit (what was that a 220 hp) non aspirated and a 13 speed, no Jake's and 3-9 trailer, usually carrying around 75,000 lbs of steel. 1st load out of the mill I was on the tollroad and going up the steepest incline, a trooper pulls me over and asks, " Why are you going so slow?" Mind you this is less then half way up and now on the shoulder. I looked at him and said You pulled me over just to ask that! I'll tell you what you jump in the drivers seat, and show me how to do it and I'll drive your squad to the top! I can't believe you did this, I was going 29 mph and now I'm sitting on the shoulder you sure didn't think on this did you? He turned around, walked to his squad, got in and drove off! That's when I learned some of these guys are not the brightest bulb on the tree!

@@birdmandan7077 I can't imagine how long it took you to get back up to speed (assuming you even did get back to 29mph lol) I've been thinking about getting into trucking but looking at all the problems that can (and likely will) come with the job is making me back out. Seems like a fun job! (the driving part atleast, seeing the country and all) I struggle getting my manual civic up a hill from a stop without stalling it, 75000lbs of steel and only 220hp... that's hell.

Looks good! The only thing I would have done different is I would have made the two chains in the center of the machine independently 4 points instead of running the chain all the way across and using 1 binder per side. That way if something comes loose you only lose 1 point of securement instead of the whole chain coming loose. Legally your fine but it's just added protection.

The main reason most of those drivers don't care about their truck is they are company drivers and most likely they have no pride in their ride because the company don't let them 'make it theirs' cant add anything or change anything .... so stupid , they basically live in that truck , let them be comfortable while they make you money ... thats why a boss like Tim is a dream boss , he has pride in his fleet and actually cares about his guys and gals ...the few boss's I had that said ' treat it like its yours' or ' do whatever you want as long as its still on it or looks like it does now when you leave " ... that truck stayed spotless and was taken 10000000x better care of than the other companies .

Hi Tim I hauled heavy equipment for a rental company when I was young in the Houston TX and surrounding areas never had to climb any mountains this video did bring back some good memories makes me want to drive again if only I could. I would love to see a trucking company with all cab overs I love seeing them have not seen any for years now I know it was fun driving the one my father owned. The last COE I drove was an old mack cracker box the owner did not keep it in good working order it was not fun. The last trip I was taking it it was hauling pipe from Houston TX to Cameron LA I told the owner to get someone else that it would not get past the weight station the owner got a friend of mine to take it he spent 3 days in jail and the truck was impounded in LA for not being road worthy.

URGENT IMPORTANT just trying to give you a friendly tip to avoid spending your hard earned money and hauling loads for free it is very important that you carry a roll of American made duck tape with you. You need to tape the exhaust pipe shut on anything you haul. The crashed fire truck you’re hauling now has 2 engines the exhaust needs taped on, the reason being when going down the road the wind goes in the exhaust pipe and spins the turbos on dry bearings. The turbos only lubricate when the engine is running. You well know how expensive turbos are. Tip number two it’s a good idea to use heavy duty shackles to hook your chains to. Lastly, let the air out of the tires of whatever you’re hauling if it’s too high. You can gain 6-10 inches real easy. Better safe than sorry, like watching your videos.

Covering the exhaust is a must if towing backwards and the load is turbocharged. Simply you don't want the turbo Turning without proper oilage.Cheers !

unless there is an exhaust leak before the turbo no amount of air flowing past the exhaust stack will spin the turbo ,,what will happen however especially with a rearward pointed exhaust stack is water and debris in the exhaust ,,,however most of these fire trucks i have seen have a rain flap on top of the vertical stack

It wouldn't be enough air to spin the turbo fast enough that the residual oil can't handle

@@unathandavis I have seen several turbos have to get rebuilt because of being spun and no oil pressure it doesn't take much to burn up the bearings in a turbo

@@stevesmith1158 nope the exhaust system is closed and can't turn turbo fast enough the air would have to travel through the engine to be a factor. Thats why nobody worries about a wind storm turning a turbo.

My largest oversized load.. was a frame for an airplane part for the 777 made by Janikie for Boeing. It was 32 ft wide and 75 ft long. It wasn't a very long run. It was only from Hamilton Washington to Sedro-Woolley which I think is about 12 to 16 MI. But it took us 8 to 9 hours to do and that we had to have police escorts and everything. They even did road construction 6 months in advance to sink the road under a railroad track bridge from 14 ft to 17 ft so I could pull this load to where it needed to go. Also the company that contracted me to pull this load paid for all the road work. 🤯 I don't know if that was the coolest load I've ever pulled, or pulling a couple hundred and twenty foot long wind turbine wings from Hamilton Washington to a few spots in Oregon and Washington.

I agree now that I’ve gotten older, we ran stinger car haulers to the Nashville sale 3-4 times a week, our 379 with a tuned 600 Cat climbed it at 80-90mph (when it was all clear), came down the Chattanooga side about as fast. Looking back, it was silly and irresponsible but the truck took it with ease.

I always tape them up then put a rag over it and then tape the rage down. If you ain’t careful most times bags rip. I use a red heat shrink tape and it doesn’t come over easy

You should get rubber mats and cut them into rectangles and put them in between the chains where they cross because having them touch could make them eventually snap without that mat there

If anything I would've tried to get maybe another one or two pulling forwards an back . Not too many good places to chain them down at but again never hurts to have extra security incase some bears wanna give ya the run around .

I would say don't cross your chains. You have backup chains in the center, so it's not the biggest deal, but if it were 4 corners only, you would want to avoid crossing. If one chain breaks and you're crossed, the load can move a lot more than if you had a short run on each corner. It's counter to what most people learn, but the geometry speaks for itself.

If you have a 6ft chain crossing to the opposite side of the load, and you lose one of the corners, the load has the potential to shift away from the broken corner up to 12ft until the intact chain will interact with the load again. If you have 3ft chains on the corners, the load only has the potential of sliding away from a broken corner 6ft before the chain interacts with the load again. Also, on the opposite END of the load from the broken corner, crossed chains will not assist in retaining the load. The load can rotate on the intersection point of the crossed chains becoming completely useless in keeping the load safe.

Yeah, losing 1 chain in a cross tie front and and back is enough to lose the entire load if it shifts. Someone did a great demonstration video here on KZbin with a toy trailer setup.

First off Tim asked for for advice from people that have experience. pulling oversized heavy equipment loads... nobody's telling Tim how to do anyting ....for example you always cover the exhaust because the wind going down through the exhaust can turn the turbo and burn it up because it doesn't have any oil pumping to it ... it'll also can get rain and road debris in the exhaust so it's best to cover them. Also you want to fold the mirrors in because you're already oversized and they stick out a considerable amount .... not to mention you want to secure every door because you don't want the wind catching it and ripping it off. You also want to check that stuff every time you stopped because assholes will come and open the door without you knowing ...

Great channel Tim. I’ve been watching from the UK for a while now and love the American way when it comes to trucking. You guys take soo much pride in what you do and your equipment. Over here you just turn up, drive whatever your given and other than the odd few, the trucks are pretty soulless. I have some questions. What gross weight is the norm for trucks in the US? 90,000lb is under 41,000kg, majority of semi’s in Europe run at 44,000kg or 97,000lb gross on a daily basis. Also, most are around or under 500bhp, they don’t have any EGT gauges and the drivers couldn’t care less about the motors, it’s foot to the floor, climb as fast as the truck will allow. I doubt anyone (even owner drivers) back off to preserve the equipment when climbing. Also, I notice that American trucks cold starting seems to be a drama or an event. Do they not have glow plugs? Over here, cold starting is no drama at all. You just turn the key and it starts pretty much the same as normal.

Will Curtis. In Northern Europe, we have 50 000 kg as normal with 60 000 kg total on lumbertrucks. Most of the lumbertrucks have 750 hp pluss.

Sitting here thinking exact same ... Looks cool, sounds cool ... oversized, heavy haul?? ... Where im from, 9/10 semi hauls are 120.000lb+ to be efficient enough to make money. 14 feet is standard hight for everything, and nothing oversized within 10 inches over each side and theres no drama in either power, torque, brakes or going up and down slopes or anything getting hot doing it. It would be some pretty boring videos if we went out and fit go-pros to every second load going around.

Also if those chains are only rated for 10,000 pounds, then you need at least 3 more to make the weight rating to be legal. It's been a while since I've done heavy haul flatbed, but I do know you need to exceed the weight of your load, but I can't remember how much by. Awesome load though. 🍻

That's what is was thinking and they fig each tie down by the lower rating of the two (ex. Boomer rated at 7000 chain rated at 10,000 it's ony worth 7000lb on that tie down)

Additionally if you run a single chain link he did on the rear of the trailer from the trailer to a central point on the load and back down to the trailer cuts the load rating of the chain in half because 1 chain is being used as two hold down points if you follow what I am saying. However if you have a long single chain going from the trailer to a binder to your load on one side of the trailer and then were to have slack chain the hooking to a binder that is hooked to the load on then to the other side of the trailer then load valve of the chain is 100% of its rating because in reality you are using two separate chains that just happened to be connected together in the middle Additionally crossing chains like he did on the front of the trailer is a bad idea because if one of those chains were to break it the other chain would be in effect pulling the load across the trailer, it is a much better practice to secure your load with chains/straps pulling in a straight line on each side of the load. I personally used to always cross my chains until I went to a training seminar on load securement and the instructor covered that subject in great detail and had scale model of a trailer and demonstrated proper and improper methods of load securement. Anyway he put a sheet of teflon on the deck of his model trailer to simulate a slick/icy trailer deck and crossed his “chains” and tightened them evenly and the cut one chain and every time the load on the trailer pulled to the side of the trailer that intact chain was pulling towards.

While you guys in the comments aren't wrong, thats mainly for turbos in the open/with open compressor housings and "straight pipe" exhaust. I doubt there's enough free flowing air through that exhaust to make that turbo spin.

There is more than enough air pushing back though muffler to spin a turbo. Don’t believe me get a modern muffler and take an blow gun and blow backwards through the muffler and then get a turbo and set it on a bench with anemometer in front of it and then hook a blow gun up with an air pressure regulator on it and see how little wind speed it take to windmill a turbo and you will be surprised. Personally I like to place a cover the exhaust and air intake when towing a vehicle because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as the old saying goes.

@@gullreefclub the fact you mentioned setting the turbo on a bench in a completely open environment proves to me you missed the point of my comment. Not to mention I was specifically talking about this application tim is hauling. Im aware how easily a turbo spins when there's zero restrictions, but that's not the case here. In this case there's a full exhaust system, full intake system, intercooler and engine all connected to it making it much less likely to spin by itself. I never said it can't happen, just that it's not really an issue in this particular application. It's not like I'm over here saying it's never an issue and you never need to take special precautions with turbo equipped vehicles. All I was getting at is it's more of a (but not specific to) performance application type precaution.

Tim when it comes to videoing in places like that it’s better to ask for forgiveness then to ask up front, if they have that big of a problem with it just stop videoing, if they say something tell them it’s for insurance purposes that you video when loading/unloading

It don’t work that way bud. 99% of the places can really ruin your life real quick. And you can loose the load.. never assume and never use the it’s better too ask forgiveness then permission. Definitely when you don’t know what kinda location you’re at and what they do. Some places you can be federally charged. And those places they don’t give too craps about forgiveness. If you have ever done any federal transporting you would know this. So Tim be careful listening too this kinda stuff. No need too get in trouble over something simple as filming wait until you’re off the property and do you’re thing

@@triplehfarmsllc7348 I’m a def hard core republican, and also have been in law enforcement for years and my step dad has owned a trucking company for years that pulls out of NC specifically around nuclear power plants, you can not and will not be charged for anything you said, that’s the truth of it man, you can not like it all you want but it’s a 1st amendment right and living and working for a county that has a nuclear power plant I have to know this specific and it’s not against the law to take pictures of anything you see in public or record it, if you enter a facility that is gov protected they can ask that you not record however they are required by law to have that posted long before you enter that said facility, he would have been completely fine and like I said he’s recorded before and it won’t a problem, idc who you think you know it doesn’t make you right bc you aren’t, most likely the guy didn’t wanna be filmed in case he messed up, it’s better for insurance and the report to have any load recorded if you can while it’s being loaded, if he did exactly what I said he would be fine and get some good extra footage as well, if Tim lived life being cautious of everything like you say he wouldn’t be the person he is, and prob wouldn’t be as popular as he is, stop being one of those people

Just as you can do government work on property not owned by the public.. I’ll give you a example timken they make bearings everything is pretty hush hush even for their workings no pictures no videos and can’t even say what is being hauled or made at some of the plants. Being they have a government contract and build parts for the government. Things are secret for a reason. And way above your pay level as police officer brother. But again you know public right clearly not private property and the does and donts on a strictly enforced restricted area. It goes for plants as Google Tesla many other places. And I’m a far right Republican myself but their are places you can and can’t do things. I kinda feel like if I was speaking too you on the phone you feel you have a right to record the call 😂 and ya down. But good luck with videoing and doing whatever you think you can. Unfortunately it won’t work everywhere. And Tim being respectful and asking is the smart thing. No one likes a privileged dickhead. Now and then I think Id like to go trucking once more. You've pointed out the good and the bad parts. I think I'll keep dreaming of how it was in the 70's and 80's, driving Mach R700s and pulling tanks of gasoline or fuel oil or chemicals. Going house to house delivering fuel oil was really tiring in the winter when we had a blizzard. God bless you.

Duct tape or you can buy bags for this so the turbo don, t spin with no oil . also carry wire with you to wire your chains together and not loose in chain box. Great chain job and loading.
