Glad to see you are keeping within the useful load constraints. There is no sense in overstresing any helicopter. I have rebuilt main gearboxes that have been overstressed. That cost the customer an absolute fortune. And you don't want to damage a friends helicopter.

I went through A&P school back in the 90’s. One of my classmates was a helicopter pilot. He had just recently autorotated a Hiller after it chucked a rod through the crankcase. The suspected cause was overload while pulling Christmas trees. Not applicable to a turbine machine so much, but I can see how the gearbox could suffer as well.

Great to see you get a relatively easy job every so often. Normally, I'd agree that that part breaking would suck...but it happened when it was stolen to "hopped up" car thieves. The break left them stranded with a 15 mile hike that they probably were not ready to do. I'd say that was instant karma.

And they left the cab open to weather too when they abandoned it. Well at least they didn't bust out the windows, slash the tires, disable the engine, etc like some other joy riders are prone to doing. I will keep saying this - We need mandatory laws of restitution where thieves when caught (with no way around it) have to pay back up to seven times the value of what they took or up to seven times the cost of the repairs in order to make more complete restitution to the owners for the stress and inconvenience. This going with 80% insurance coverage after a $2,000 deductible viewed as being acceptable really isn't going to discourage many plus insurance doesn't make one whole but just takes some of the edge off of it. Best!

I can understand why they did take a oem knuckle. Most people that lift their trucks use quality spring lift kits and don't use cheap kits that use blocks or modified knuckles like that one. That said, if they run into a situation like this again and have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle first I bet they don't make that mistake again.
