My little albino hedgehog was 3 months old but he passed away yesterday from constipation. 2 days before we took him to the vet and all they did was give us antibiotics. He was my first pet ever, and he was so young. I'm just glad I check on him before he passed and saw he was going. I help him in my arms as he passed, so I'm glad I was there for him.

Took my hedgehog to the vet today and she had worms and they said it was really common!! Where I live I paid $100 for her meds and her cost for the check up
@ToriLynnPPH7 жыл бұрын
It's actually fairly unusual for pet hedgehogs to get worms - I'm glad to hear you got it taken care of quickly though!
@lexrose37687 жыл бұрын
PugPibbleHedgie, Actually it's not very unusual I work at an exotic vet and hedgehogs with worms are one of the most common things we see in hedgehogs. 😊
@stephaniemoreno41457 жыл бұрын
Lexy Rose why is it so common? is there a reason behind it happening?
@lexrose37687 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Moreno, All wild hedgehogs carry worms, Healthy hedgehogs 'develop' a resistance (or immunity) to these worms, which means that the hedgehog itself prevents the worm numbers building up to the point at which they become a problem to the hedgehog (so that normally the hedgehog and its parasites will live in harmony.) However, if a hedgehogs immunity is reduced (by, for example, a bad injury, disease, starvation or even the stress of hospitalisation) the worms can then multiply unchecked; this will then result in them getting to such high numbers inside the hedgehog that they DO now cause a problem. And basically common sense is that all Hedgehogs are pulled from the wild, no matter if they were bred because generations before them were pulled from the wild. Hope this clears some things up. :)
@stephaniemoreno41457 жыл бұрын
Lexy Rose hey, yeah for sure. Thanks for the response, I have never heard anyone mention that it is “common” I can see how an added stress could induce an influx, though.

She’s the sweetest and bonded to me immediately. Today we’ve gone to target and Starbucks and a few other places. She loves kids and dogs and other people. When I was 18 I adopted a hedgehog from a pet shop in Clear lake Texas and the hedgie was only maybe a month old. No belly hair and was smaller than my fingers. It didn’t make it. It took me 7 years to emotionally get over it. I got my baby from a hedgehog rescue and I’m so grateful. Love your videos so informative 🤍

I figured this tip out from a friend! If you already have a wire cage, and you’re having issues with heating or you hedgehogs climbing this could be an option for you! My friend cut pieces of fleece to match the sizes of the walls. She used 2 layers to make it thicker, and attached the fleece to inside of the back wall and the 2 side walls. Then she did the same for the front wall, but only did it halfway up so that it would still have some ventilation. It helped insult her cage, and I’m assuming it would prevent climbing as well! It might be cheaper than buying a whole new cage if you already have a wire one!

I know this is a late comment, but I thought it might be helpful. Recently I learned that Aspen bedding is not a good option for hedgies, at least where I live. Normally would use aspen bedding, but apparently most are inhabited by mites. Mites are little bugs that make your hedgehog itch, cause irritation and dry skin, and in my case, make their quills fall out. My vet said that about 95% or aspen bedding is inhabited by mites just for people's information.

Hi Tori. Doing some research on my (hopefully) future Hoggo. I'm aware hedgies need to be kept at strict temperatures in their habitats. However, while I recognise certain temperatures could force them to attempt hibernation, I was wondering how long it would take between being out of their habitat and in lower temperatures for that to happen. For instance, were I to take my Hedgie out of his 23C home and play with him for, say, 3 hours in a 14C room, or letting him run around for a few hours, would he be okay with this? How many hours can he be comfortably away from his house safely?

I will say to anyone considering a hedgehog...HEATING IS ESSENTIAL. My hedgehogs cage was heated but the bulb went out when I was at school and by the time I got home he was hibernating. After lots of time on a heating pad and fork feeding him a scrambled egg, he did come back. Be careful because not everyone is so lucky!!!!!

hey i doubt that this comment will ever be seen or responded to but i am in DESPERATE need of someone with some knowledge on hedgehogs. I have a hedgehog named Piper. She’s about 2 and a half years old and this past week I noticed that she hasn’t been sleeping in her hut like she normally does and instead she’s been sleeping half on and half off her wheel. Additionally, in the past few days i noticed that she hasn’t been touching her food and water. Today i cleaned out her bin and bathed her. Normally she’s a very fussy hedgehog and she huffs a lot when i pick her up and bathe her. But now, she doesn’t struggle at all and it was almost like she couldn’t pick her head up out of the water. At first i thought she was just drinking the water because i had just put her in our sink (fresh water of course) but i realized that she wasn’t moving at all or trying to get out like she normally does. I immediately took her out, dried her off, and used a heat lamp to keep her warm while i looked up what could be wrong. During this time, Piper threw up clear liquid and she lost the ability to lift her head up. Around a hour ago I noticed that she was wobbling a lot when she would try to walk. The wobbling would point to wobbling hedgehog syndrome but i’m afraid that the throwing up could mean something worse. With the quarantine going on, I’m assuming that most vets would be closed. I’m scared that my baby could die and I could’ve done something to prevent it.

Would there be a way for me to work around the cold and wire cages? Or I guess my question is: will a c & c cage work better? I’ll probably end up ordering a c and c cage. I’ve heard of putting heat lamps then heat pads under he bedding / tunnels/ fleece. And putting hits etc. would this work in a cold room?

I ordered a cute set of fleece liner, tunnel and snuggle sack. I can't wait for my girl to arrive 😍 I am used to bonding with small animals, but part of my bonding is not picking them up but let them come up my hand themselves. My hedgies cage is In my room so one night when I was sleeping my mom saw smoke all from my room and my hedgies cage was on fire (he's ok he just turned 2 yrs old) and my dad got a rlly bad burn on his foot. I would never recommend a heat pad to anyone. Maybe if you can find a better brand than zoo med but other than that there a hazard for hedgies

I have one guinea pig (please do not hate on me I had two Guinea pigs but one passed) and three hamsters. I am highly thinking about getting a hedgehog. I am prepared for mess, smell, high-maintenance (as my guinea pig is all that plus a drama queen), and also it being nocturnal (I have three hamsters. Hamsters=nocturnal) Also I am fine with feeding live bugs, handling pointy quills, and a potentially unsocial hedgehog. I already have a small guinea pig cage collecting dust in the basement (it’s way too small for guinea pigs but probably okay for hedgies) I have hermit crabs which have a heat source (a heat pad) so probably my parents would be okay with me getting a heat lamp for the hedgie. I have an exotic vet ten minutes away, which I take my piggy and hammies to in case they get sick. You guys made it to the end! What do you think??? Should I get a hedgie? I would prefer a male because 3/4 of my small animals are females (and I’m also okay with seeing masturbation, lol, I’m used to it, I bred my hamsters once so I saw it)

Sounds like you have alot of animals already. In my opinion I'm fine with the 4 animals I have at the moment and I think that's a good amount of animals. 2 are hamster and 2 rabbits so that's good so that in the day i hang out with my rabbits alot in the day and my hamsters at night. Seeing as you already have 3 hamsters which are nocturnal I would say to not get another nocturnal pet so you have more time for the animals you have at the moment. And hedgehogs can get pretty expensive. So maybe in the future when you have less animals that would be great but its up to you.

Whimsewcool has closed, so who else would you recommend for fleece items? Thank you for making these videos as they are so informational! I am getting my first hedgie after 2 years of waiting. He is 4 mos. old and albino. So any special advice for this lil guy? Thanks!

I haven’t bought new fleece in a really long time, but I would search Etsy and just read shop reviews before purchasing to see if they’re a good shop or not :) As far as albinos go, their care is the same as other APH’s.

Love the information but could you add pictures of the items you are talking about so if I go searching for a particular item I would get the correct one. Thanks.

I want a hedgehog but I can’t find a place to buy one and also I am scared that my pit bull and my yellow lab are going to attack it and my nearest exotic pet veterinarian is at least 45-60 minutes away. I don’t know the right choice bc I really want one and I am financially ready but I’m just not sure

I’ have a pit too and I searched it up and it said most dogs know that hedgehogs have quills and can hurt them but don’t let them play together bc the dog can end up hurt and so can ur hedgehog 😃,and I would suggest waiting if ur not financially stable bc it would be better to be stable and good then not and have two dogs and a hedgehog 😀 just my opinion though, hope u find my information helping and also I would recommend when u go to the place wherever ur getting ur hedgehog from ask them on how to introduce ur dogs to the hedgehog, or u could do what I’m thinking about doing which is having my dogs meet my hedgehog one by one so my hedgehog isn’t bombarded by dogs,just my advice though and she also said that she doesn’t really introduce her hedgehogs to her dogs so I would suggest just keeping the hedgehog away from the dogs as much as u can hope that helps 😃

Hi, I live in Thailand and think I am getting a hedghog but do I need heating bc its pretty hot?
@alliewoog75057 жыл бұрын
valeria bocheva as far as I know, a hedgehog needs a constant air temperature of 73-80 (Fahrenheit) degrees. You should always have a thermometer to measure the temperature even if you’re mostly sure of the temperature.
