Sadly, this has become a rather common site over the past few weeks, at WAF. Hedgehogs, like many animals, can be curious when in the search of food and get themselves in to sticky situations.
This, rather large hog, managed to get himself stuck inside a humane rat trap when the lure of a slice of bread was too much to ignore. Luckily, the trap is checked regularly and it wasn't long until the hog was found and quickly brought in to be released.

What an exceptional piece of decent human being! 1. Refuses to use poison to deal with his rat problem. 2. Takes the poglet to the wildlife hospital rather than attempting to free it himself, in fear of hurting it. 3. Brought his own cutters, just incase they would have to destroy the cage. Gold star, my man. Gold star.

Gold for cage instead of posion. Platin for bringing the hedgehog to the hospital and Diamond for bringing along cutters. That´s what he deserves.

I use to raise hedgehogs with my grandmother. She would rescue them from markets amongst other things. People would hunt them and sell them off as pets. Grandmother always comes home with a new friend for me. One of them would go with me to pre school and Ill always remember how I cried one morning when CICI died. Precious little things they are.

Every time I see a hedgehog I think back to when I was a kid. The family had this old Alice in Wonderland , British illustrated book... I assumed all the animals shown were made up.. I remember being frightened by these creatures... it wasn’t until KZbin came along that I discovered there really was such a thing as a hedgehog.. ! (From California)

I literally can't put into words how much I love these little guys (& girls of course lol). I think lockdown will have one silver lining & that is a lot more people became aware of hedgehogs visiting their gardens. I joined a great group on Facebook dedicated to hedgehogs, it was created 10 years ago apparently but in the past year since the first lockdown the members to this group has gone from just a few to over 13k now! I honestly think we've turned a corner in their decline, all thanks to lockdown & people becoming aware of the wildlife in their gardens. Got two awesome hog houses from Riverside woodcraft, not cheap but built to last & with a huge living area inside so great for hibernation as well as casual use, multiple feeding stations & I'm planting more shrubs to give them more habitat to forage in & to build nests under if they prefer not to use artificial hog houses.

yeah, rat poison is basically just the strongest blood thinners we have for humans, but when the blood is too thin from an overdose, it just leaks out of the veins and arteries and skin and mucus membranes, causing an incredibly morbid, slow, and painful end. so sad :(
