How did this HEDGEHOG get stuck in a garage door?!

We've seen many things at Wildlife Aid, but this particular rescue proved to be another first for Simon!
We were recently called out to rescue a hedgehog that had become stuck in a garage door. Once we arrived it became clear that this was going to be far from easy - the hedgehog had become wedged in a gap just 1 inch wide!
Although getting the frightened animal out was very tricky for Simon, the hedgehog had another problem... The trauma of the door had resulted in 'pop off syndrome' - where the orbicularis muscle (usually used to let them curl up) slipped over the top of the pelvis and was stuck on the poor hogs back. Now it was down to Maru to give it that all-important second chance back in the wild...
PLEASE DONATE - Just £3 from every viewer can help us save many more animals! Online: bit.ly/wafdonate Text Donation: Text WILD3 to 70300 to give £3.00, (WILD5 to give £5.00 and WILD10 to give £10.00) UK residents only.

@@emeraldqueen1994 Thank you, its a real photo from the Liberian Civil War, there were so many factions that at a certain point some started wearing straight up Halloween costumes to differentiate themselves throughout the conflict, in this case a child soldier wore butterfly wings.... Awww. Little hoglet. I'm so glad you were able to resolve that awful muscular displacement! I tried to rescue a hedgehog once - it was in the middle of the road in daylight, crawling very slowly. Unfortunately the poor thing died before someone from the vet could come and pick him up. He was about 400g (I weighed him after he'd died) and had over 20 ticks, so I don't think he really had much of a chance even if he'd got immediate care. I tried to give him food and water and he did try to drink, but he wasn't really strong enough. It was a minor miracle that I didn't get any ticks biting me, since I was holding him after he'd died and was cooling down! Very foolish of me.

A couple days ago, while I was doing an errand for my mom, I came across a gull with a broken wing in the parking lot. Some people told me to leave it because "it has germs" or to "step on it, it will die anyways", but I know I can't just leave it there. I tried to catch it like the other gull from before, but it's almost like you chasing that cormorant from this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGqXYWZ8fdisosk. Until I somehow managed to guide it into a nearby story where it was finally caught, albeit by a passing customer who dropped a shopping basket with little to no regards for the other wing. The staff took over with one of them calling the local animal shelter, but I don't know why or how people can be either indifferent or downright cruel toward wildlife and I sometimes wonder if I've done the right thing... But anyways, I would like to thank you for having a good heart and a gentle soul to care for all life.

Well done you for trying, so many people are anti-gulls it's sad. Herring Gulls (the ones we most often see at the seaside or nesting on the roof) are actually red-listed in the British Birds of Conservation Concern list due to ongoing declines, but people still persecute them. They are not 'pests' or 'vermin' just another species struggling to survive amidst human over-development, habitat loss, over-fishing. I once reported a poorly juvenile Herring Gull who was limping badly, not where I live so was not familiar with local rescue facilites. Noone came and the poor baby was next day dead in the car park - must have been clipped by a car. I was heartbroken, it seemed like noone cared. I cannot understand any animosity towards wildlife, especially when in need, and usually our fault in some way.
@Sienisota
@Sienisota 4 жыл бұрын
@@paularedmond8708 I don't like this one species of gull in Finland, because it takes so much space from other gulls. That gull has been successful in integrating with human settlements, while other species have trouble. That said, if I saw an individual gull of that species stuck or hurt somewhere, I would try to help it. Heck, I have a phobia of snakes (particularly snakes in the wild), but am still angry if someone kills one, they are endangered here, and it isn't the poor snake's fault that I am hysterically afraid of them. Humans *can* afford to understand the pain of an animal, and our capacity for empathy doesn't risk our species or individuals. So why not avoid cruelty? All humans should try their best to treat other species with kindness. Just because we are "at the top of the food chain" doesn't mean we should act like a**holes.
@paularedmond8708
@paularedmond8708 4 жыл бұрын
@@Sienisota I don't like speciesism personally, simply because I think if we start persecuting or hating on a particular species for being more successful and more damaging to other more vulnerable species, we humans are about the worst on this Earth. If we didn't keep meddling with the balance of nature, introducing non-natives, spreading invasive species, changing the environment and habitat so hugely that only the most robust species thrive and the vulnerable, endangered, rare species that are locally scarce or specialised in their diet/habitat requirements then most things would balance well. But our selfish behaviour amplifies problems, making it harder for nature to balance itself naturally. I used to hate all slimeys, creepies, wrigglies or spiders, daddy longlegs, earwigs were my worst. Then I started wildlife photography and now start to appreciate all the different species and their place in the ecosystem. It's not for humans to decide which species are good or bad, some might be in the wrong place or in big numbers but we need to find the most ethical, sustainable, natural and humane ways of dealing with them when we have made mistakes

That poor hedgehog and you know he was trying and trying to get through for who knows how long and the tighter is got the more he hurt. makes you wonder how long he was even stuck in there for. Given that I sometimes don't open my garage door but every few days he could have been stuck there longer than we imagine. I am so used to a run of episodes that were just silly foxes or errant ducks and swans that just needed a bit of relocation and off they went I was not expecting something as tense as one of the 999 emergency shows! Given that hedgehogs usually bounce back pretty quickly, or so I understand, a 8 day hospitalization goes to show you that he really had a rough time of it.

This precious little “ bobblet” would’ve never made it if not for all the help and dedication his human friends put in to his healing. THIS is what humans should be doing a LOT more of to make up for even a fraction of what we’ve taken and done to the other species on this planet. In my country (United States) there is very little resources put into wildlife rescue and rehab. Trying to find help for stuck and injured animals is a nightmare, so most animals are left to suffer and die when they could be rescued treated and released. I love watching Simons work and hope it will inspire more people to work towards having similar services in their area , I am for tax funding for these programs rather than making them Beg for donations to do the work they do!

I wish there was an organisation like Wildlife Aid where I live. Years ago, my mum spotted an underweight hedgehog in our garden one night in November. We kept him inside overnight and contacted a national animal rescue charity the following morning but they refused to come out and they told us we would have to keep the hedgehog until the beginning of June! We weren't given any advice on care of the poor thing. We built a cage and run for the hedgehog (inevitably named Sonic) and fed him cat food. We also tried to de-flea him, which involved using a spray but having to skip the part that instructed you to run the spray into the animal's skin. Sonic would even use a cat litter tray as his toilet area. Because we had to pick him up every day to clean out the cage (hedgehog faeces smells awful) he became used to humans and stopped curling up when we lifted him. He enjoyed being stroked on the snout too. We didn't know about a soft release, we just put him outside one nice, warm, June evening at sunset and put some straw in the undergrowth to give him somewhere to sleep. We put food out for him but after a couple of days, it wasn't being eaten. It's awful to think that in trying to save him, we probably made him unable to survive in the wild. If there had been videos like yours at that time, we would've known what to do. I hope they're helping people in other parts of the UK save our wildlife. Thank you for all that you do, it's amazing.

@@VagoniusThicket Thank you. I just hope he made it. I hope he reverted to wild behaviour and didn't trust humans. At least he was nice and fat, while his rivals would have lost weight after hibernation. That should've given him a head start. My current apartment has a large garden that's shared between the residents of the 8 apartments. Parts of it have been allowed to grow wild to help our wildlife. We have had a family of hedgehogs, there seems to be a breeding pair and their offspring, which happily share the food we put out for some stray cats. Last autumn, I found one of the adults outside in daylight, looking thin and it seemed to be unwell, as it moved slowly and didn't react when it was picked up. I had to call the same organisation that had left us to care for Sonic. Thankfully this time they came to collect the hedgehog and take it to the vet. They just returned her and she looks very healthy and seems to like the hedgehog house we got for her.

Alfredo C they have to release the animal where they found it as they don’t know where the nest is and the hedgehog will know exactly where it is by sniffing around.

Poor thing! Heart-rending to see him in such a state. He must have been terrified. All's well that ends with a few stitches, some free meals and a release. Stay well and out of garages from now on, Poglet! Good job, Crew, as usual!

Im so grateful you put the effort to rehabilitate and release these animals. Too many times where an injured animal is taken in and they just euthanise because its more cost effective, convenient or because they are least concerned as a species. Ive even had the one time where a call operator said to leave the injured animal and let the fox deal with it. So a very big thank you!
