Great review. These are not commonly available here in NZ. I rode the original Pirelli Phantoms in the 1980s on a couple of bikes. Grip was good but they weaved like crazy and the same applies to them now on the T120. Currently running Pirelli Sport Demons which feel pretty good after a few kms, time will tell.

Thanks for the steer to these tyres Tony. Tried them out on my 2019 Street Twin (on road only), here's my initial thoughts: Tough to fit, very stiff walls - use a tyre shop. Both sizes are now tubeless. Good value at £176 for the pair + fitting charge. Front is different pattern from rear (as explained on Heidenau website). Feels weird handling for first 200ml, then feels no different from a standard road tyre in dry (don't know about wet conditions as I don't do rain). Looks the absolute dogs boll...ks, very pleased, thanks again Toni.

Did you have to change the front fender at all? Ordered a 100/90-18 for the front and the shop said they couldn't fit the wheel back on the axle with the fender on.

The cracks and tears are usually caused by running rocky/rock shelf/embedded rock trails where a lug catches for traction on a spin and/or warm summer tarmac hard cornering/hard acceleration/hard stopping and/or overloading. The lugs grab and stretch and tear and sometimes fold. That's why it's expected life is 6000 miles on the rear. The tears get worse and become dangerous as you will lose entire lugs and sets of lugs later on. The front scallops from road cornering because the stiff sidewalls keep the tire from deforming like a true road tire and the contact patch in a curve is small and wears fast. That same stiffness makes them good in the dirt and rock, helping to keep from folding a rim. It's a compromise tire that Heidenau designed to overcome the bad dirt reviews previous tires had for 50/50s on dual sports. I will say that on lighter (below 350lbs) motorcycles, they last and perform better, whether dirt/rock/gravel/tarmac. If you have the stock 18" front and 17" rear on your twin, your choices for a nice aggressive knobby looking tire are limited. And, there is a serious max load difference in those sizes, if you are stock size on the twin, the rear, with the wet weight of your bike, leaves about enough for a very petite rider, maybe, alone. This may just be a case of wrong tire for the application.

D e x thanks for commenting. Very interesting and insightful comments. The lugs either catching or under load makes sense and the idea of it becoming progressively worse also makes sense. In terms of the tyres on my bike with me as a rider, I’m 5’5, 9.5 stone. I ride predominantly 95% tarmac and I do tend to push the bike into corners but the tyres feel great in the dry. However in the wet that’s another story. The cracks were only light but like I said I’m a light rider on a fairly lightweight bike and there shouldn’t be too much stress on them. I really enjoyed your comments, definitely she’d some light on the matter and I’m sure people reading this will find it useful. Thank you

ok, so last week I did put on the Heidenau Scouts. I must say that it was your review that swayed me a little bit more towards trying them out. The tyres behave exactly how you described they would behave on the road. So, here are my thoughts on the tyres (K60 Scout, 110/80-19 & 130/80-17, the latter size comes without the infamous middle strip which messes with grip). Fitted on a BMW F650 Funduro (1994): the tyres are true 50/50. the handling takes some getting used to, at least in the beginning as there is an obvious kind of wobble, but it is predictable, and after a couple of days riding, it almost disappears. The bike gives you a sense of instability, like when you try skiing for the first time, but that's for a day or two. the weird part is that you feel that the bike tends to lean every now and then, but this goes away once you break them in after a day or two. which brings me to cornering. my bike is not a performance bike and I cannot lean it to scrape my knee, but turning is amazing on these tyres. you feel like the bike sticks to the tarmac and holds lines very very well. I tried them out on roundabouts and was left amazed. but i'm not some super experienced rider (only been riding for a year, and this is my first bike ever -I'm 44 btw :) ). The day i fitted the tyres it was pouring with rain and I had only put on the rear tyre, but it held its ground perfectly. I tried the pair on dirt just the other day, took it like a breeze. i don't do a lot of off-roading, and when I do, it's mostly mild dirt with planted rocks and some loose gravel (I avoid mud puddles and mud altogether). When the dirt road started to include only loose gravel and pebble I did have the feeling that the grip was still there, but I chickened out and turned around. Noise on the road: yes, a noticeable humming starts to kick in after 90km/h (60mph), but you covered that very welll in your review so I knew exclty wha to expect. Kudos! Overall, I think it is a great tyre and now that I know what to expect of it, I may be sticking onto them for the next time I change tyres. Hopefully that will not be any time soon. Thank you!

Thanks for your opinions. All reviews on KZbin and alike will be subjective and I don’t try to hide that fact. Having ridden many tyres on various bikes over the 25 years I’ve been riding part of my reason for choosing the heidenau tyres was styling, but if they didn’t perform I’d have quickly swapped them out for a different compound. In my personal experience these tyres are fantastic in the dry, capable of taking on quite a lot of abuse. As mentioned I think they’re terrible in the wet, but now I’m older I’m more of a fair weather rider. I also mention this in the review. Hope this helps

Hi Toni - love the frank review. No messin' about, just say it as you see it. I am soon to get the ST and want the same look (also looked at TKC 80s). I have had so many tell me I am wrong and that I am compromising safety etc. I don't mind the bit of extra noise and as for cornering, I'm a newbie and you don't buy a ST to ride like a racer. If it rains, I'll probably take the cage. Is it style over substance? Maybe, but so what. We do what makes us happy; I will be fitting them.

Hi the thing with a dual sport tyre is its designed for both on road and off road use, so you shoulnt be compromising safety as it is designed for road use also. The only think you may compromise is duarability as the compund will wear quicker potentially and also as mentioned you will have more road noise. My heidenaus arent great in the rain, but check out some TK60 reviews to see what other riders are sayong about those. All the dual sport tyres though are designed for both on and off road use so dont worry about that. Hope this helps

I ride light-duty offroad anywhere from a couple miles to a couple dozen miles on forest roads to get to trailheads, where I park, and backpack out for 1 or more nights. Hi. I would say I’m a confident rider and so on country roads etc I like to push the bike, but obviously around town it’s a different story. I found the heidenau tyre to be great on hot days, you can really push the tyre. However you can get a front wheel squibble at lower speeds and if you turn the wheel rather than lean the bike at a roundabout for example (rider error). I would say go with what you are comfortable and confident with as ultimately that’s going to relax you and make your riding far more smoother.

Hi. Yes Heidenau do not do an exact fit. I contacted a supplier who recommended a size shift. I think I gave one of the other people ion here a similar answer about swapping out tyre sizes (theres a whole debate on that). I’ve got 10/80/18 front which was a slight difference from the original. I read a few articles around tyre profiles which said you could swap out one size on the width in relation to the profile. So my original was 100/90/18 and I swapped it out for 100/80/18. There’s various debates online whether or not you should do this. I contacted Heidenau supplier in the uk and they also recommended this swap as the nearest size, so it’s really down to personal choice. I’ve heard of changing up by one size as I have but not any larger, but check out some more online forums or maybe a designated KZbin video based on swapping out tyre sizes, just to get more of a rounded opinion on the subject. Like I said I’ve changed the profile as per the above, and I’ve ridden 2 sets of heidenaus 14k miles.

Thanks for the great review! I'm curious, what sizes do you use? 110/80 18 front, 150/70 17 rear? I have a 2020 T120 and think 110 front, 150 rear are the correct sizes, but not sure. Do you know if it is possible to fit a 170 on the rear of the T120? Also, they make a cold climate version for the 150s, which is suppose to help in the wet conditions. However, if the slippage is happening to the front tire like you say then having a stickier rear tire won't help much, right? Thanks again!

Toni, a few follow-up questions, if you don't mind: (1) Did you have to raise your front fender to accommodate the new knobby tread? (2) How do the tires handle at high speeds (70+ mph), (3) Do you have any sense from your experience, intuition, taking with others, that the 100/80 18 would handle better (or be better in any way) as compared to the 110/80 18, or is it just a matter of personal preference? Cheers, - Rob

Toni, Please could you tell me what tyre size you fitted to the front? Looking at the standard sizes already fitted I can match the rear...but not the front. Plus if its a bigger tyre would it affect my insurance. Hope you can help. many thanks. Ste

Hi ste. Yes the tyres are horrible in the wet, and as mentioned this was front and rear.... so I would imagine they need to also look at the front compound to match that or the rear to make a difference. Hope this helps. Ride safe and enjoy that T120! As for insurance... I couldn’t comment. You know what insurance companies are like.

love those tyres and they would great on my T100 Black, but living in Spain, I think I need more of a sticky road tyre. But love that look. How do they handle on corners and low speed corners around town. Did you stick to the same sizes as the OEM Phantoms?

Hi. I love these tyres in the dry! They are an amazing tyre on hot days on tarmac. I absolutely love them for that. I took the bike to Spain last year up into the mountains and I couldn’t fault the tyres at low speed or high speed they handle great. Obviously when you first ride a knobbly tyre you have to get your head around the fact that they will stick... but that’s all in the head as they do. And be prepared for some extra vibration over a standard road tyre. The thing I don’t like is the tyres in the wet. Not good at all. I had to change sizes to fit my rims.

Hello Im probably going to buy the heidenau for now, but have you heard of the motoz traction gps? They should be a competition for heidenau K60... Maybe you would like to review them? L L

Hi Heidi. No I’ve not heard of them. I’ll have a look online see what I can find in terms of price and user reviews, and potentially keep these in mind if they are contenders. If you decide to get them please feel free to share your thoughts, would be interested to see how they fair.

What bar end mirrors did you put on the street twin?
@ToniReviews
@ToniReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. These were simply cheap £10 bar end mirrors from ebay. I removed the bar end spacer / internal weight and simply clamp them on the end as its a simpler less invasive way of applying bar end mirrors to the street twin.

@@geoffstoutt4693 Hi geoff. yes the tyres went straight on no problem. My dad has a tyre machine in his garage so we fitted them. I wouldnt try manually fitting them as ive heard the walls are very stiff (which doesnt do well if adventure riding and you need to repair with some levers) hence why they have had some negative reviews from people. But if fitted on a tyre machine theyre fine.
