I think so many of us get this feeling but we know deep down that there is some element of modern society that is profoundly sick. I think the truth is that we do not want to be alone but we also no longer want to bathe in the sickness. The answer is to address the problems in social structure; to not assume that all in the past is obsolete. There are some things that have been forgotten that should not have been forgotten.

One of the reasons why I enjoy Heilung is because, unlike most of what we see in depictions of old Germanic religion today, they do have a healthy balance between the masculine and the feminine in their music and imagery. Nowadays the Heathen world is dominated by images of big, strong and sweaty men, sword-wielders, axe-grinders, and shield-brothers. We get so much emphasis on gods like Odin and Thor, yet what about all the others? What of the mother and the celebration of fertility? What of the concept of life-bearing and rebirth? What of Frigg, Freyja, and the seeress'? Heilung has been using a lot of imagery, even in this "music video" that depicts the more feminine side of Heathen culture, using Maria as a focal point, as well as the images around her of the spread eagle women holding open their, well, happy places. I enjoy this. As much as I admire the strength-promoting, hero-worshiping and war-going concepts in old Germanic heathenry, I also can appreciate that other half of it that makes a healthy society possible: the mother and the celebration of her fertility. It's something both me and my wife can admire when we think back to our forefathers' and where we come from.

In many elder cultures, from old Pacific Islander Cultures and Shinto to The old Nordic and Celtic, Faiths... women were part of the balance and many held positions of high regard. The concept of a "Wise Woman" is not new, and women represent a vital part of the cycle of life. As christianity and islam are cultures dominated by misogyny and patriarchy, they would try to minimize and subjugate women.

Maria is singing something like: Fé, wealth is a source of discord among kinsmen; the wolf lives in the forest. Úr, dross comes from bad iron; the reindeer often races over the frozen snow. Þurs, giant causes anguish to women; misfortune makes few men cheerful. Óss, estuary is the way of most journeys; but a scabbard is of swords. Reið, riding is said to be the worst thing for horses; Reginn forged the finest sword. Kaun, ulcer is fatal to children; death makes a corpse pale. Hagall, hail is the coldest of grain; Christ created the world of old. Nauðr, constraint gives scant choice; a naked man is chilled by the frost. Isa, ice we call the broad bridge; the blind man must be led. Ar, plenty is a boon to men; I say that Frodi was generous. Sol, sun is the light of the world; I bow to the divine decree. Tyr, Tyr is a one-handed god; often has the smith to blow. Bjarkan, birch has the greenest leaves of any shrub; Loki was fortunate in his deceit. Maðr, man is an augmentation of the dust;great is the claw of the hawk. Lógr, a waterfall is a River which falls from a mountain-side; but ornaments are of gold. Ýr, yew is the greenest of trees in winter; it is wont to crackle when it burns.

Allfather, whoever hears this and not instantly preorders the album has lost all of his feral soul. Maria's voice is just like a lightalb sitting on a branch of yggdrasil, singing to call all the animals of every world to dance under the light of the full moon. this is still the essence of heilung if not even purer than ever before! just listening to it makes you feel the pain and sorrow of midgard and lets it fade away at the same time.
@pierrerossouw60835 жыл бұрын
The harmony of throat singing and Maria's insanely beautiful voice. This is exactly what we need to combat the domination of silly little pop songs that have no meaning, no soul.

What are pop songs? They don't exist in my world! Not with HEILUNG!!!! 💪
@luriddream4 жыл бұрын
Generic modern pop is like fastfood, you just consume it. Its just another simple product put forward for masses to consume. I like variation and listen to many genres so long as i like it but i reckon its not fair to consider such horrible stuff as music. I mean just watch any nicki minaj video then watch this or even slipknot, yea even slipknot is much better than generic modern pop because at least it appeals to real emotions and actually contain soul to some degree.

As of this comment, 129 people do not know what real music is. Music, real music, more than makes you think or feel; it touches your soul, resonates with in it, and harkens us back. Back to a time when music was raw and vocals were charged with primal feelings. We, as a species, worshipped, praised, and gave thanks to our (respective) deities with music from our hearts; while at the same time, music could inspire us to fight for what was ours, to bring war to our enemies, that we may fight with a ferocity unmatched. This is as real as music can get. And I, for one, am hugely appreciative of the work Heilung has put in bringing this form of music back to the masses.

@@thorvalld Very Cool! I come from the Knud & Ingebord Myklebust line in Norway, earliest trace was 1855 on Avaldsnes Isle of Karmoy according to my Grandfather's notes. Royal home to several ancient Norse Kings ...So you never know ;) Would have to imagine it was a source of many of the Viking stories prior to them as it is a strait where most of sea faring trade went through by pure necessity. So you're a Hinterlander! Ice giants!! Cool man! Username checks out perfectly!
