This is how to do a heavy song. I am late to the party here, but I think that's one of the reasons I love opeth, they throw at you sections that you never thought that were possible, they seem to don't fit, they don't have much composition meaning, but they sound amazing. I actually think this is my favorite opeth ending, it's the best climax for a song like this, after all that angst you finally get an emotional release, but the beauty is that you don't know if emotionally the release involves good or bad feelings, it's just releasing, you can interpret that as you see fit.

I wouldn't want a single second to be shaved off this track. That transition in the middle really does stand out, but I don't think in a bad way. It feels like an event, part of the journey. I don't mind having a bit more of a break there either lol. The outro, I disagree that it doesn't have a connection to the rest, especially with the subject matter of the track. The emotion up to that point is anger, but the end feels like a response of helpless resignation. I actually believe that it wouldn't tug on your heartstrings the same way if it was a more standard transition. Makes me wonder how many great musical moments are out there to be discovered by breaking the rules 🤘

This outro reminds me a little of Omega by Periphery (or Omega reminds me of Heir Apparent really) because of that kind of false ending before the real ending. While I do really like the outro of Heir Apparent, like you it does feel a little disconnected from the rest of the song to me. Omega, however, does this kind of perfectly in my opinion. It took me until I started to learn how to play the song on guitar that I realized the breakdown at the end is one of the riffs from the beginning of the song slowed down. By the time you get to that point, it has been almost 11 minutes of just chaotic prog metal (excellent chaos though) so you almost forget about that riff (and it wasn't even a super prominent riff in the beginning too) and they just bring it back in the most brutal way possible. While I still love Heir Apparent, that ending does feel a little tacked on.
